Whether we can afford it or not is irrelevant, we don't spend thousands on anything unless we are both in agreement. If DH came home with a new car without consulting me, we'd have a problem.
ITA. I'd be furious. Something as big as a car purchase should be discussed prior to purchasing. Even if DH wanted to buy a new tv, I would expect him to run it by me first and vice versa.

I wouldn't get another convertible as an everyday car. It just isn't practical or safe. Perhaps, I would be OK with it as a third car that is driven on local roads on the weekend.

Re: Would you let your DH buy a convertible?
Is there any way you guys could purchase two cars? Maybe used models of a smaller SUV and a convertible? Sounds like a win-win to me.

I have had two convertibles (an BMW X3 and a Porsche Boxster) when I was younger and didn't have children. I had scares with both cars when the top was down. One time rubber from a blown out tire went flying in the air after a car in front of me ran it over. It ended up hitting the front of my car but it could have easily fallen a few feet later and knocked me out. Anytime it snowed, I was veering off every road and skidding into oncoming traffic. Now knowing what I know, I wouldn't get another convertible as an everyday car. It just isn't practical or safe. Perhaps, I would be OK with it as a third car that is driven on local roads on the weekend.
DH currently drives a 5yo Cayenne. DH was saying he could keep the Cayenne and buy the convertible as a 3rd car. Problem is the reason he is in the market for a car is because the Cayenne has been having a lot of issues lately. My boss also had a Cayenne and had several issues with the SUV at the 5 year mark.

Would you let your DH buy a convertible?
If it's a 3rd car I would. I wouldn't be comfty with my LOs in there, then again I only let them have the windows open on side streets.

Re: Would you let your DH buy a convertible?
I would only get it as a third car for him to use as a weekend car. With the ages of your kids I think a more practical car would be better (and hopefully last longer than 5 years). I would wait to get a convertible in about 4 years when your kids will be older.

I don't "let" my DH do anything. We are both equal partners. If we were financially capable, he'd be free to make that decision on his own. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to discuss it with me, but I'm sure he would.
So you would expect he just roll up one day with a new set of wheels? Yeah right.
Excuse me, but you hardly know the dynamics of my marriage and if we could afford it without putting a strain on ourselves then absolutely YES my husband could buy a new car. He's an equal partner in our marriage and contributes equally, therefore he's able and capable of making choices on his own. He doesn't need to ask permission before he makes a move. I'm sure he would have a discussion about it with me, but if he didn't and we were well off enough that the payment wouldn't affect us, then by all means I'd love to have a convertible. My husband is a hardworking provider and would absolutely deserve a new car. I'm not a car person, so I wouldn't care what he bought.
ETA: I can't believe people are actually judging me and my marriage because I'm secure in my statements. The sarcasm directed towards my response are totally immature and unnecessary.

I don't think anyone is judging you, I think we're making the point that regardless of what amount of money you have when a big purchase, like a car, is made you consult each other and discuss it. Generally, aside from your house a car is the next biggest purchase you're going to make in life. I personally feel like neither one of us should be going out and purchasing a $30-50K item without first discussing it with one another and making sure we're both on board with the purchase.
It has nothing to do with being an equal partner, telling someone what they can or can't do, or who makes what. I feel like in a marriage you discuss things first, plain and simple. If big money is being spent I think a couple needs to make sure BOTH people feel comfortable with that purchase. If you're cool with your DH spending whatever he wants when he wants, that's fine if that works for you. I just think most people feel like when it comes to spending money, big money, the decision should be made by both people in the relationship, not just one. KWIM?

You don't "let" you're DH do anything you are "equal partners" impyling that the OP and her DH are not?!
You have nerve trying to flip this.
Good for you and what works for YOUR marriage but I do not think that is out of the ordinary that a wife would expect her DH to discuss a purchase as large as a car with her.
If anyone was judging it was you.

I made statements about MY own life, and if you think there was some implication about the OP and her marriage that's a stretch you are really trying to make. I don't care what she chooses to do, I simply stated that would NOT have a problem with my husband buying a car if it didn't take food off my table or prevent me from paying the mortgage.
You're reading between the lines and trying to find judgment in my statement that simply isn't there. I reiterated the use of the word "let" as the OP stated that in her title.
If other people choose to discuss this kind of thing with their DH, that's fine. I never said it was wrong.

I totally understand discussing things with your partner and treating them as equals. I stated that I think my DH would discuss it with me, but I don't think I'd be up in arms if he didn't.
My opinion on this situation is clearly not the norm, but that shouldn't make me a target for antagonistic comments.

I have to agree here. Your reply to the OP came off as judgmental when you put the word "let" in quotes. It seemed like you were implying that the OP was controlling her husband.

IMO your response was judgmental and snarky.
You can dance around it.
You can call out others as "judging" you.
But I think majority rules on this one

My DH had a Porsche Turbo S cabriolet (his dream vehicle) and I tried to convince him not to get rid of it despite it not being practical in the least bit. And I couldn't even drive the darn thing because it was a stick.

This is what you said:

I don't "let" my DH do anything. We are both equal partners. If we were financially capable, he'd be free to make that decision on his own. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to discuss it with me, but I'm sure he would
IMO your response was judgmental and snarky.
You can dance around it.
You can call out others as "judging" you.
But I think majority rules on this one
I stand by my statements and if people just want to interpret it to create drama, that's on them. I am not going to continue arguing semantics because people are taking this too seriously, like I am passing some blanket judgment on every single marriage in the universe which just isn't true.

Would you let your DH buy a convertible?
I don't understand why everyone feels the need to jump on kitten everytime she posts something that doesn't go along with the majority. It's really getting old.

My DH had a Porsche Turbo S cabriolet (his dream vehicle) and I tried to convince him not to get rid of it despite it not being practical in the least bit. And I couldn't even drive the darn thing because it was a stick.
DH is also looking into the 911. I think we are both on the same page that it is impractical right now. DH came to the conclusion that he will buy a family car now and buy his 911 or similar in a few years when the boys are in boosters.
