Would you let your DH buy a convertible?

DH is in the market for a new car and he really wants to get a convertible. We have a 2yo and 4yo. The car seats will fit in the back seat but it will be tight. I personally think that it is very impractical but the one thing DH loves is cars.

Would you let your DH get a convertible?

I prefer that DH get an SUV (Mercedes GL or similar) with a third row but he thinks it is the same as a minivan. He is also looking into the Tesla (can fit 5 adults and 2 kids) but what he really wants is a convertible.

I was on the fence about a 3rd child but I recently had surgery and told DH I am officially done. Now that DH knows we definitely won't have a third, he is excited at the chance of getting his dream car.

Would you let your DH buy a convertible?

As long as we had one "family" car I would be okay with it, my concern might be financial more than practical but the other options sounds plenty expensive lol so in that case I would be cool with it

This! My car is the main family car. I have an SUV. DH got a car for errands, estimates for work, etc. We also have his work truck.

Re: Would you let your DH buy a convertible?

We have a 4 year old and 3 yr old and i'm pregnant with number 3. DH bought me an Audi Convertible last year for mothers day.

The car seats and now boosters fit beautifully in the back.

My only rule is we dont go on teh high way with the kids with the top down.. Just a safety risk i'm not willing to take.

The kids absolutely love it. I drop them off to the sitter with this car all the time and it is my commuter car.
We still use the van on the weekends.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a sedan, which is fine for our family only. We could never carpool. Every family we know in elementary school and above says the key to juggling is carpool. Not sure how true this is. DH thinks we don't have to carpool.

Love the Audi! I plan to get an Audi for my next car after my current lease is up. DH told me Audi now uses google maps for navigation.

Yes, but I would not let my children ride in it with the top down.

My parents had a convertible 1970 Dodge Challenger--my sister and I rode in the back all the time with the top down...so much fun!

But I personally wouldn't want one...not because of the kids, but because I believe in NY it's usually either too hot or too cold to ride around with the top down. Plus, if you've seen my hair, you know I don't work well with the wind. Chat Icon

But if it were my DH's dream car...yeah, go for it.

Would you let your DH buy a convertible?

I would. We jsut bought a Jeep Wrangler. The top will be off it all summer long.

Our other car is a Chrysler 200. Both are roughly the same size.

I see no need for 2 big cars.

Would you let your DH buy a convertible?

I would have a tough time with it. My Acura RDX (the smaller SUV) is the family car and it is where the car seat stays. But in case of emergency I think I'd he afraid of DS riding in a convertible.

I don't "let" my DH do anything. We are both equal partners. If we were financially capable, he'd be free to make that decision on his own. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to discuss it with me, but I'm sure he would.

So long as my kids rode in my suv, then he can do as he pleases. I would not let the kids ride in a convertible. Ftr we are also equal partners, but one of us doesn't always think everything through, lol.

this is what I was thinking. I don't "let" DH do anything either, we are equal partners but if EITHER of us made a purchase like that with out discussing it with the other there would be a problem,, I mean come on...Chat Icon

Yes as long as it was a 4 door car I think I would be ok with it.
When I wanted an SUV my DH didn't tell me no, so anything other than a 2door coup (not practical with an infant) would have been ok.

This would be our single largest purchase ever only second to our house.

I told DH to go for it. He worked very hard to get this far and deserves something for himself.

Of course he is the one who is now saying it is not practical because it isn't! DH does a lot of pick ups and the cars he wants are 2 doors and both our kids are still in convertible car seats. I think this would be a more viable option when the kids are a few years older and at least both in booster seats.

Ditto. Whether we can afford it or not is irrelevant, we don't spend thousands on anything unless we are both in agreement. If DH came home with a new car without consulting me, we'd have a problem.

To answer the OP, I *personally* feel it is an impractical car for our family right now with a 5 yr old and a 5 month old but when they are older, I wouldn't mind.
