Would you have complained

I ordered a pasta from the local pizza place last night. I asked for Penne with Alfredo sauce. A treat When it came I didnt open it right away b/c the rest of dinner wasnt ready. When I finally did I was so upset to see there was prosciutto all mixed through it! Im a vegetarian and the kids basically are too. My husband wasnt even home. I dished it out to them anyway, trying to pick out all the peices and they took one bite and didnt like it. It did have a smoky? flavor to it. It was terrible. So basically we didnt have pasta with dinner.

I didnt want to be a complainer but the more I thought about it I thought I should have called b/c it wasn't free! Alfredo sauce should not have ham in it. Maybe if it was Penne ala vodka or something, but not just Alfredo sauce. Just wondering

ETA: It was my first time ordering from this place, however after ordering this many times before and never having this happen I had no idea they would throw meat in it.

Actually some places make it with proscuitto. I always ask them first because I don't eat it.

Alfredo sauce has prosciutto in it - its the best part! LOL

Most cream based sauces have some kind of meat in it!

No, I wouldn't have complained. I think if there's anything that you don't eat (especially something as broad as all meat), it's just always best to ask before ordering.

Wow. I had no idea. I've NEVER seen prosciutto in alfredo sauce.

I'm a vegetarian and I've never had Alfredo sauce with meat in it...I've never heard of that, and I've been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. And Alfredo sauce is one of my favorite treats too. I've never seen a recipe for Alfredo sauce that called for prosciutto either.

I might call the place and mention it to them, not necessarily in a 'complaint' kind of way, but more of a heads-up that they should have that printed on their menu, I guess?

Yeah, I'm not a procsciutto fan, especially in my alfredo sauce. Some places put it in their vodka sauce too. I would hope they have it on their menu description. If not, I ask.

No. If you are a vegetarian, it's up to you to ensure your food doesn't have meat in it.

The pizza place can't guess that you're a vegetarian.

If you told them, then yes I would have complained.

I honestly had no idea and would not have expected Alfredo sauce to have Prosciutto in it.

That having been said I'm a strict vegetarian so i ALWAYS ask. I would not have been able to pick the meat out and eat it. I would have gotten violently ill.

ETA: I'd consider it my error for not asking and not complain and just be sure to specify next time.

as far as i know - real alfredo sauce from italy has peas and prosciutto in it

our american alfredo sauce would be considered a regular pasta with cheese or pasta with butter in italy

maybe they are from italy?

i'm pretty sure traditional alfredo has proscuitto (like vodka sauce) and i think peas in it too. american version doesn't. so the place is probably more traditional italian.

i would not have complained - if i were vegetarian i would have asked, or would now know to ask in the future.

I am a vegetarian also and have never had alfredo sauce with prosciotto in it. I would have never even thought to ask about it.

I would have called them, and not expected a refund but even just to mention it to them since I don't think that is normal.

I thought that was carbonara (Sp?) sauce when it has Prosciutto in it.

i've never heard of alfredo sauce having meat in it. penne a la vodka--yes. i always ask if there is meat in it since i don't eat meat either.

i wouldn't complain, but i would make sure i ask specifically about meat the next time i ordered anything new from a place.

it's so frustrating--meat shouldn't be a part of pasta dishes unless it is clear in the name of it.

If I had ordered it from there before and it did not have meat in it, but did this time I would have complained.

If it was the first time, I'd just make a note of it for next time.

You have to read the menu carefully because it may actually say there is procutto in that sauce.

I think as a vegetarian it is YOUR responsibility to check with the place before ordering to ensure there is no meat in it so to answer your question, no, I would not have complained. *Technically* they did nothing wrong.

Now, speaking as someone who is 100% Italian, I've actually NEVER heard of prosciutto in a white Alfredo sauce. That's usually just butter, heavy cream, and cheese.
