Re: Would you have complained

Typically, alfredo sauce doesn't come with meat in it. Carbonara almost always has some kind of pork in it. Carbonara and alfredo sauce look very similar because they're both dairy-based. One is made with eggs and the other with heavy cream. I guess recipes can vary from place to place, especially with small family-run restaurants. Do you have a reason to complain? Probably yes. Would I have confirmed that there was no meat in the dish prior to ordering it? Probably yes, especially if it were a big deal to me. I guess I would just chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Re: Would you have complained

asking for pasta alfredo in Italy is like asking for chow mein in China.

a historical link

again, OP sorry you didn't get what you thought you were getting. I think you got some sort of bastardization of carbonara and alfredo.

on another note. all the mention of thickeners starch and convenience in the amercian versions break my heart. Chat Icon

Now, speaking as someone who is 100% Italian, I've actually NEVER heard of prosciutto in a white Alfredo sauce. That's usually just butter, heavy cream, and cheese.

where you born in Rome where it originated? b/c there it has no cream at all....but if you were born some place else cream could be a regional addition. Chat Icon

Wow. I had no idea. I've NEVER seen prosciutto in alfredo sauce.

Alfredo sauce is my absolute favorite and I have NEVER had proscuitto in it. Peas yes..."ham" no. I would have complained also as I hate ham and it would have been ruined on me as wellChat Icon

P.S. I do ask if they make their alfredo sauce with peas otherwise I am stuck picking them all outChat Icon

Re: Would you have complained

I guess there are different versions. Some make it with and some make it without. It depends on the region. When I make it at home, I don't put any peas or meat.

So I guess ask before you order it. Every place will make it differently.

Ive been a vegetarian for 22 years now. So when I order a peanut butter and jelly I should make sure theres no meat in it right?! After 22 years of never having meat in my Alfredo sauce anywhere why would I think to ask about it this time??? Makes no sense to me, but oh well. Leason learned.

Alfredo sauce has prosciutto in it - its the best part! LOL

Most cream based sauces have some kind of meat in it!

Agreed. YUM. But I do know that many versions of Alfredo are ham free and a LOT (I'd say MOST) of places make it for the American palate so the confusion is understandable and not at all strange. I never know what to expect when I order it from a new place!!

If something like this happened again I'd just say "I didn't realize it had meat in it, do you have an alternative for vegetarians?"Chat Icon

I would not have complained because they are allowed to change recipes as they fit. And like many posters have said, the differences can be regional.

And yes, it is your responsibility to ask when you order anything to figure out what is in it.

Plus you said you have never ordered from this place before, maybe THEIR receipt has meat in it.

I hear ya. I feel the same way you do - and now I've learned that it is sometimes made with meat, so thank you for posting about it, because now you've taught me to ask! Chat Icon

I'm totally craving Alfredo sauce now. LOL.

Re: Would you have complained

I am surprised it didn't mention the meat in the menu description. I dunno if I would have complained. I don't think of Alfredo as having meat in the sauce, but I do think of it as a sauce that goes with meat, if that makes sense.

I might call the place and mention it to them, not necessarily in a 'complaint' kind of way, but more of a heads-up that they should have that printed on their menu, I guess?

I never heard of meat in Alfredo either. Peas, yes, but not meat.

I think what the AP said is a good idea since as a vegetarian, you are unfortunately going to have to be extra careful with a new place.

I too have never heard of meat in alfredo sauce. If I ordered that, I would never have thought to even ask if there was meat in it. I would call and mention that they should put that it includes meat on the menu.

I don't understand some of the snotty responses to this though Chat Icon

I don't either, but what I do understand is that every message board out there has some people who perpetually have their underwear in a twist about something. Chat Icon

I make homemade Alfredo sauce and never put anything else in it but I guess you will just have to ask from now on. Chat Icon

Re: Would you have complained

I have never had alfredo w/meat unless I ordered it w/some. I would reread the description or call and ask for the description. It could be a mix up and at least you would know. Maybe it was an honest mistake. People make mistakes and IMHO just because you're a vegitarian doesn't mean you have to suffer if it was their fault. Food is expensive. Get some answers. EIther way you'll know for next time!
