Would you buy a used couch?

I cannot stand our couch and loveseat. From afar they look nice but close up, they look so bad. They are chenille and pill so badly, they are just impossible. But they are only 2 1/2 yrs old. My DH will definitely be against buying something brand new so I do browse the craigslist ads often but then I get totally turned off at the idea of owning someone else's couch. The skeeve factor just gets me. Even though I see some beautiful items, I still think I wouldn't want it. But I'm just wondering if I'm being ridiculous since some people are getting rid of really nice items at a fraction of what they cost brand new.

Would you or have you bought something used? from a non-friend/family member.

Go to Levitz - they are having blowout sales.

I just sold my couches on Craigslist - and they were in perfect condition.

For me NO. I just think of people having se x on them or something and get totally turned off. It may be strange but its true. I just couldnt sit there and wonder. I know I have issues.

I would not, but I worry about bugs and stuff.

My aunt and my MIL regularly buy used furniture from people they don't know. I hate sitting on them. Chat Icon

Re: Would you buy a used couch?

LOL...yeah OK it's not just me with the skeeviness of it. I was thinking of people farting all over the couches but bedbugs and sexual encounters are pretty good possibilities.

Well that's a done deal for me...

My #1 reason for never buying used furniture. There's an epidemic right now, and bedbugs do NOT just stick to beds.

From Craigslist- honestly probably not- you will never really know what's been on them or in the pillows.

We did buy our couches used from a friend of a friend- he bought them for the new apartment he moved into with his girlfriend and they broke up a month after that so they were only used for a month. To be honest even that I wasn't thrilled with, but DH liked them.

Re: Would you buy a used couch?

I scored HUGE on craigslist with my couch and 2 ottomons.

We wanted a Mitchell Gold so bad, with a baby on the way, we could not justify spending that money.

I was on craigslist, saw an ad for a Mitchell Gold platinum collection, goose down, with 2 matching ottomons.

Leo was against it, he feared animals and smokers...I thought it was worth a look.

The house was a freaking mansion. (We searched later on and found out it was a close to 2 million, busy bodies)Chat Icon

No pets, non smokers, she simply explained to me she leases a car every 2 years...why is she expected to keep the same couch for longer then a year? They wanted something more formal.

It is a slipcovered couch, so we were able to wash the covers.

The great thing is I can own this couch for 10 years and resell it for more then what I paid for it. She said people were emailing her nonstop, I just happened to show first with the money.

Re: Would you buy a used couch?

thinking about it now, I also have a club chair that I bought off of craigslist as well with an ottomon for 40.00.

The guy bought a furniture set...not enough room for couch, loveseat, and chair...so chair was brand new in his garage.

I want to reupholster for on of the bedrooms.

Re: Would you buy a used couch?

I know that there are some great people out there that wouldn't sell their furniture if it was nasty. But for everyone of them there are two who don't care. I wouldn't be able to buy used furniture from someone I didn't know. But I have a slight germ paranoia Chat Icon

No I wouldn't.
I would, however, (and did!) buy furntiure from Bob's in their "pit" -- you can save a lot!

Re: Would you buy a used couch?

Oh man I am getting all itchy just reading this thread!

We bought our couch from a friend (who is a clean freak!) but I don't think I would buy a used couch from a stranger. I guess you could steam clean it, but is that hot enough to santize it?

Not just sex, but farting on them, people's dirty feet, etc. The grossness factor is just too much for me to handleChat Icon

Coming from someone who's had to deal with bedbugs (picked them up at a swanky Manhattan hotel Chat Icon )... NO. You never know what's up with people's used furniture and no cheap price is worth risking that.
