I have had many homosexual friends in my life. They always told me it was something they discovered, so I voted that someone becomes homosexual.

I agree!

Same here. I always heard it was something they eventually learned about themselves.

But that doesn't mean it wasn't there to begin with. Possibly, they could be born gay, but 'discover' that they have a certain preference as they get older, more experienced, etc.

I totally believe it is genetic. Environment has nothing to do with it.

I think that it is genetic, and environment only impacts whether the person actually "comes out" or whether they hide the fact that they are gay.

This was going to be my response as well!

exactly. I believe it is genetic, and when people say it was "discovered" I don't feel they mean it was "learned" I think its just when they are ready or not to come out.

99% are born gay. Although, there are definitely many people out there for whatever reasons fall in love with someone of the same sex, even though they were previously straight. I know many women who were born gay, but chose to marry men in order to have a family. They still love there husbands, regardless.

I think a real homosexual is born with that particular sexual preference, however, I think there are a lot of teenagers out there that claim to be gay or bi, but in reality they're just confused or like to experiment with both. But again, I think a real homosexual is born with that trait and realizes it when he/she starts to experience sexual desires.

I totally agree with this word for word. My 17 year old male cousin was always into girls. A few months ago his best friend (who is a girl) came out as Bi, now all of a sudden he is bi as well.

True. I guess I have no idea what the REAL answer to this question is.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

I think some are born gay and some choose a gay lifestyle based on life experiences .

One of my very close friends is gay, and he said that even as a child, he noticed "cute" boys much more readily than cute girls.

I 1000% believe that it is inborn.

But even in this kind of case, I think it was probably something that was always within them (probably since they were born) but they "discovered" it later in life.

I guess no one can really know for certain though...Chat Icon

That is exactly what I was thinking. ITA!

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

On a side note--I guarantee if you were to do that poll here in NC, the results would be much more skewed the other way.

Unfortunately, some people have to confuse the issue of being gay with the issue of following what is set forth in the Bible. Not saying I agree with that at all--it's just what I've come across in the short time that I've lived here.

As someone who has a gay family member and many gay friends, I can honestly say its how you are born....I mean how did you know you were straight? Its something you always knew.
My Uncle always told me " I would never CHOOSE to live this lifestyle, b/c its not easy."

I 100% think born- my gaydar has picked up on 4 year olds.

I do however think that an environment can effect a person's tendancy to acknowledge their sexuality fairly.
ie- a straight person may experiment with bisexuality, or a gay person may deny it, depending on their environment.

I have had many homosexual friends in my life. They always told me it was something they discovered, so I voted that someone becomes homosexual. I think you may have meant it differently then I do, but it is fine either way. I am going to avoid the drama until it really heats up in here. Chat Icon

Nope - that's exactly what I meant...so you answered appropriately.

Discovered = external factors and becoming gay

vs.

Born = always felt that way

Oh OK- I'm changing my answer. Since the general tendancy in most environments is towards being straight- i think almost all gay people :"discover" that they are gay. At that age of discovery- maybe when puberty hits. Because what 6 year old, straight or gay, would be aware of their sexuality?

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

Well, it depends.

For the most part, I believe it is genetic, and you are born with a particular, innate, sexual preference.

With that said, however, there's a small minority who, I believe, choose homosexuality. For example, I've known a few women in my life who chose to become homosexual due to their past experiences with sexual abuse. But, again, I think that's the minority. Generally, it's not something you choose. You may discover it about yourself later in life, but that doesn't mean it wasn't always there.

I mean, at some point, we "discovered" we liked boys, correct? You didn't just pop out of your mom "knowing" you wanted to kiss a boy.

I believe it is genetic. I don't think people would actually choose to go through a life of discrimination (somewhat) and not having the same rights as someone who is hetero..

How's this for weird - a friend of my SIL (a guy) is gay - and HIS sister is a lesbian...how's that for strange! Chat Icon

I don't really get how that's weird. Chat Icon

My brother and sister are both gay. If you believe that it's genetic (i do, as well) than i can't understand why it would be considered "strange" for both of them to be gay?

I was actually just talking to one of my good friends about this last night- the gay gene- we were joking about it, but completely believe that its genetic, at least based on our experiences- he is gay, and so are his brother and sister, as well as his teenage son. I definitely think there's a genetic pattern to it.

I believe that someone is born gay, but that environment does play a factor into how the person's sexuality is expressed and developed or NOT expressed and developed.

Born...

I have several gay friends who made a poiint of WHY would you choose to have to possibly hide who you are from your family, run the risk of being a victim of hate crimes and dicrimination, not be able to be married, have children (in a biological manner), etc.

All of that is so painful and I believe very few people would choose that for themselves.

Also, many of my friends knew that they were gay at a very young age---even before they really knew what it meant.

Do you think a male that is raised by (for example) his mother and grandmother (without any male influence/figure in his life) - would be consider environmental/external factors?

Yes, I have a friend in the exact senario you describe. No male role models. He craved it so much, yet he only associated with women in the home and on our block. He really wasn't taught boy things and only had a sister, so he was very fem from all of this.

When we were younger, he was NOT gay.... But as he got older, he would get called names by boys on our block b/c he only associated with the girls (familiarity due to his family life), and then started seeking attention from men in general as a late teen. And then LOVED the attention he got from men...and yes, he is now gay. I truly don't believe he was :"born" gay.

I think it's different in all cases.. Some people might be born that way but some other people might discover it later on. They might think they like women but realize they don't later on.

I think both. I have close gay friends who will tell you and i absolutely believe that they were born gay. Then I have some that like to experiment, call themselves gay, then straight, back and forth, and I believe they weren't born gay, they are either finding themselves, or experimenting, and they will say the same.

I also believe that people are born gay. I work in a high school and you wouldn't believe the harassment that goes on about gay kids--both male and female. I feel as if there are many gay students who are afraid of their sexuality. I took a course this summer given by GLSEN and on the last say we were given a sheet that listed all of the rights that hetero people had over homosexual people.

I also have a friend who is a lesbian, and her brother is gay!
