Why are there Age requirements for food??table food moms come in. :)
Is it because of the child being physically capable of eating/chewing the food or is it b/c of their digestive system not being ready for certain foods.
This is not to offend the moms who feed their 5 month old table foods..im actually jealous.. Im already tired of pureed foods... But just curious as to the reasoning for the age limits that doctors have.
If some babies are doing so great on table food at 5 months..why not "allow" them that early. KWIM?
DS can pick up and feed himself puffs at 7 months....which makes me think maybe he's ready for some table food.. but then i look at the "list" of age for things and think maybe I should wait.... I hope Im making sense.. .

Re: Why are there Age requirements for food??
My ped never gave me any other guidelines for introducing foods aside from the ones that can cause potential allergic reactions (nuts, shellfish, eggs, chocolate and citrus fruit I believe). And dairy to be introduced after 6 months since some babies cannot digest it early on (Colin has a milk sensitivity so I can't do any dairy until he is tested further at a year).
ETS: Self feeding/pincher grasp is def. a skill that some babies don't catch on to right away - that's why the cheerios and puffs are good for practice. Once they master that, aside from food that could cause a reaction, they're really fine to have pretty much anything if it's small enough. Some babies take longer to get used to textures as well so they might gag on foods early on and take more time to get used to more than a puree. Obviously , every baby is different.

Re: Why are there Age requirements for food??table food moms come in. :)
I think digestiion is the biggie, and also allergens.
I think I remember Tilde posting that she found some chart of hers or her husband and that the Ped was recommending to her mom to start meats since all fruits and veggies had been tried at the 2 MONTH appt (sorry if that wasn't you hun!)
now they take it slower.
I started very slowly with table foods in May (Luce was bet 6 and 7 months) with a little bit of waffle with bkfst (no syrup!) or a bit of bread. and I would sort of just watch his initial reaction and then how his tummy held up the next day.
I found that he REALLY like flavor. avocado is ok but GUACAMOLE...with onions and garlic and lime and salt and cilantro..he LOVES it.
don't get yourself too worked up over it. just give him a puree and then share a bit of your food with him. both of you need to feel your way through this!
ETA: I usually serve Luce his "morning O's" right before breakfast. he is getting so good with the pincer grasp but I "feed" him farina with pureed fruit.

Re: Why are there Age requirements for food??table food moms come in. :)
Our doctors rule was if he can pick up a cheerio he can eat it.
I started with Puffs at about 6 months and by 8 1/2 months he gets to try most foods. I give him things he can mash up easily, he really likes potatoes.
I avoid the the high allergen foods and anything he can choke on. Other than that I let him try lots of things. I don't see the problem.

Like you said, about him being ready - Sean was the same way.
I started Sean at about 7 months -
I didn't see any reason not to encourage his independence and obvious interest, so the only real rules I followed were the PB/Honey/Fish rules .....and used my common sense w/ stuff that would be too hard for him to chew and and an obviouis choking hazzard -
I didn't know Eggs were on that list too - thankfully he wasn't allergic !!

chocolate was news to me but he's my son...there is NO WAY he's allergic to chocolate
that is the other thing...every ped recommendation is different. I was told about honey, nuts, shell fish. I told her what I was doing and giving to him and she gave me the "rock on" so I am.

Re: Why are there Age requirements for food??table food moms come in. :)
remember what i told you about my ped??
she basically said that (given the history of NO food allergies in our families) the 3 foods to be careful of are eggs, nuts and honey before 1 year. Other than that, she said to just try different foods and textures. She said we don't need to do the "3 day rule" or follow the literature about giving this in month 6 and that in month 8, etc. She said that is really for people who NEED to know what to give and when, but in reality... she said we don't need to treat eating like it's a science experiment - KWIM?

does this include things that have egg IN them...like baked goods and such?

Dr. Jessee
No, eggs straight up (according to Dr. Jessee)
I googled it after I typed it actually b/c I couldn't remember the reason. Here's what I found:
What is an egg allergy? Egg allergy in baby occurs when his body mistakenly treats the protein in egg as a harmful substance (see our main allergies page for general allergy information, including risk factors and prevention tips). Eggs are one of the most common causes of food allergy and those with an allergy to eggs tend to react to the proteins in the egg white - ovalbumin and ovomucoid. Some children, however, are allergic to the yolk protein, although this is far less common.
Many children outgrow their allergy to eggs by the age of 5.

This is my theory. I avoided spicy foods for obvious reasons as well. I mostly used common sense and avoided choking hazards. I think they first had bigger stuff they could bite around the 12 month mark. Before that everything was bite size pieces

When I was a baby I refused to eat any sort of baby food. My first meal was Oxtail Ragu at 6 months.
I always knew about no honey before one, but all the other rules are new to me.

I did the single stage stuff with both boys just to be sure. in doing so, Ryan had a reaction to butternut squash, and that's how I learned of Colin's milk sensitivity. I think it's good to introduce the bulk of the fruits / veggies on their own (within reason)

Nope! And my kids had food allergies...what can I say, I'm a rebel. My sons food allergies were always very iommediate and obvious. I knew what he was allergic to even before he was tested.
