Why are MILs sooo UGHH!! Totally Stupid Vent
I had a huge amazon wish list for my girls for the Holidays. I sent it to my MIL weeks ago so she could get semi-first dibs on stuff. Of course she waits until yesterday to pick a few items. For my 7 month old she picked 3 great toys, and for my 2.5 year old DD she picked 2 Disney Dvds off the list and thats it. Mind you they are not cheap at all, and they are cute but it is going to be so weird when my littlest one and my nephew (who she got 6 gifts for) are getting more gifts then my almost 3 year old who actually knows whats going on. I feel like opening a dvd is total dullsville. Its not even a bad gift but not very exciting and I feel so annoyed that of the 20 things to choose from she got TWO dvds? WHY two!???? I am hoping she got something else that she picked herself but knowing her that is not the case.
Yes I sound ungrateful, yes it is the thought that counts, yes I am thankful she cares enough to by my kids stuff, blah blah blah... but why oh why would you buy the oldest kid who actually understands Xmas the strangest non fun thing to open.

My guess is she did it because you had them on the list and she thought your DD would love them. And how do you know she didn't get her anything else? Why put them on the wish list if you didn't want anyone buying them? I'm genuinely confused.

On a list of over 20 different types of toys, which included the two movies I find it very odd that someone like a GRANDMA would only choose 2 dvds and think thats super fun for a kid to open. Obviously I put it there bc she will enjoy them but its an odd choice for a grandma when you can choose something way more fun (MY OPINION OBVIOUSLY) especially bc the list was given to numerous family members, some who I wanted to have varied priced gift options and big or small items etc..

I wouldn't over think it. My DD will be 3 in March and she's happy to open anything that is wrapped. Plus, she'll get so many xmas gifts that they all meld into each other. Nothing is really all that memorable. Just teach her to be appreciative and enjoy a movie night together :)

Are e prices similar? I can understand your frustration, but I would have spoken with her on the phone rather than just said here is the list. I know that my parents and my in laws need hand holding about gifts.

I feel the need to explain further bc I feel justified in my annoyance. On Xmas eve there will only be 3 children there. My nephew and my two daughters. Both of the babies will be "opening" 3-5 TOYS while the only one who understands Xmas will be opening 2 movies. I think it's totally lackluster and bizarre and over reacting or not is definitely an opinion.

Christmas is weeks away. It's not even December yet. It's not reasonable to assume that that is all she is getting. Maybe she has plans to purchase more things off the list or already has purchased something not on the list. As far as I can see all this woman is guilty of is not finishing her Christmas shopping by November 26. She probably has no idea that you are checking the registry and freaking out about Christmas gifts in November.

Ugh my mil is a terrible gift giver too. Always quantity over quality. I did an amazon wish list as per several family member requests and she completely went rogue and bought DD a bunch of junky things that I have no room for at home. I made the list specifically for my kids age and put things that won't take up a lot of room since we have more than enough toys. Oh and she bought DD2 a winter jacket in 2T. She's in 12-18 month and not even 3 months ago, she bought her clothes to wear in march in size 12 months. She makes no sense.
So I get you.

I feel your pain. When my daughter was not even 15 months my DD was gifted a 4T tank top that is for when she is in dance lol um.ok. it has been in the dresser for a year and will remain there for 2more yrs when it fits lol

I know now a days you are considered late to the gane if your house isn't fully lit up and your tree is not up and all your gifts aren't bought and wrapped by this weekend, but that's just media hype and a few overachievers ruining it for us normal people and not reality.
She is probably old school...as in, thinking we have until at least mid December to finish shopping.
Ah the good old days.

Well if it makes you feel better, my MIL doesn't buy even one present necessarily for each of my kids! Their family does a secret santa thing where each adult buys one (very inexpensive- $10) gift for one of the grandchildren/nieces and nephews. I think it is so weird that my in laws don't buy at least one gift for each of their grandchildren. They aren't poor. Just bizarre to me. I just SMH and try not to get overly worked up about it.

I think you are overthinking it. I have a 3 year old and at least my 3 year old will not be counting how many gifts he got compared to his brother. Honestly he would be thrilled to get a movie. I know with my son it's never about the number of gifts since he gets bored with opening presents and wants to play/watch/use his new toys

I think you should relax. My DD would be happy with movies. It's not about the number of gifts. For all you know, she could buy something else for her that is not on your approved list. Or maybe she'll buy something else off the list at a later time when the gifts arrive and she sees what she has for everyone. It's not even December yet!

My parents and in laws are not the best gift givers either. They are extremely thoughtful and of course we appreciate all gifts and will teach our boys to do the same. But I have found it's sometimes best to tell them exactly what to buy. I think my dad and FIL appreciate the direction too haha.
And on the other hand, my mom ONLY gives "money for college" for EVERY occasion and holiday. That's actual my favorite gift but talk about boring for little kids hahaha. They'll appreciate it when theyre older I guess.

DVD's are a dull gift. Maybe if you act really excited about them, she will think it's a really special gift though. My son is around the same age and he gets very excited about anything that has his favorite characters on it.
I totally understand your vent. My in-laws get on my nerves a lot this time of year. The other day, they asked me what I already bought DS for Christmas (I figured they asked because they don't want to buy the same things), so I start naming things (didn't even get 10% done) and they cut me off to tell me "don't go crazy, he won't even remember this year, he's only 2". So IDK why they even asked, probably just to criticize my choices.

It always makes me laugh too because all this stress over gifts that will be forgotten and tossed aside in a few weeks. Seriously does anyone even remember the gifts they got last year that everyone was stressing out about buying a year ago.
Kind of defeats the true meaning of Christmas. But Christmas is a huge commercialized shitshow lately so it actually doesn't surprise me. That's why they start running ads and playing Christmas music on Nov 1st. To get you to feel like you better rush...and in effect just spend spend spend more and more

My MIL hijacks my gifts, gets her the really nice thoughtful gifts that I told her I would be buying DD myself and gives them earlier so that I can't then give the gift. That in my opinion is way worse. She even gifts them at inappropriate times... LIKE MY MOMS SHIVA!!!!! My mom dies, she knows my mom and daughter had a bond over ballet and I wanted to get her a music/jewelry box and what does she do? Gets her one engraved with HER and my FIL's name in it and gives it to her at my moms shiva. Unfortunately, my daughter is the kind of person to remember who gives her what and when. Her memory, i have no idea where she gets it is crazy good. She is 4 and will pick something up that she got when she was 2 and will accurately tell me when and where she got that item from. So it upsets me when my MIL actually gets her nice gifts that remind her of them rather than junky gifts that get tossed aside and I can throw out.

I get MILs who give bad gifts, believe me. Most of the ones my MIL gives DS stay at her house cause they are just useless.
However, i don't think those are bad gifts. Your daughter is 3, so can sit through a movie (mostly) and follow the storyline. She can get excited over the characters. Maybe grandma thinks they can have some special time together, sitting down and having a movie night. Maybe your daughter is very active or you tell your MIL you never get anything done so she figures this could occupy her and give you some time to get things done. Maybe she figures your daughter has soo many toys already, the DVD will be something different and more of an experience. Maybe she bought dolls to go along with the movie and is doing a themed gift?
There are sooo many possibilities here. I would not freak out about it until you actually see what she does with the DVDs.
Also, If you wanted her to buy specific gifts, you should have told her so. I split DS's list every year between the people who ask. Out of the 4 things he asked Santa for this year, I'm only getting one. His grandma already got the #1 item on the list, and his godmother is getting another. Maybe that's a solution for next year.

Nope I feel you. My mil will ask me what I got them then buy the same thing and play dumb. I'm going to ask dh to ask her what she is getting them.
As for your mil, she could have done better.

Vent away sister! I totally feel you! I would do what a PP suggested & act all excited about the DVDs & tell your daughter that you can have a movie night at home that evening with dimmed lights & popcorn. My mil gets my kids tons & tons of toys but it's all stuff they are not into & so it sits here, cluttering up my house & money wasted on her end. You think she would ask for suggestions- not a chance.
