Weird question regarding babies name....
Every Christmas my in laws setup a huge display on their front lawn. My FIL makes wooden sculptures and gets very festive...well anyways...
DH was eating lunch at their house today and saw a sketch of a toy box for the front lawn that will say "Avery's Toy Box"...like something that would have some huge spotlight on it and festive for christmas to go with his decorations.
DH flipped and called his dad and said "do not put my daughters name on your front lawn". His dad seemed upset, but is this a weird request?? I don't think our daughters name should be broadcasted along the front yard. It's a kid and there are penty of weirdos out there.

I would not personally feel comfortable with that AT ALL. We grew up being more private and being a born and raised NYC'er, I'm too nervous about crazies.  I would be with your DH on this.

Yeah when he told me I flipped because I was like "what the hell are they thinking". You just don't do certain things these days with kids.....maybe 30 yrs ago and they don't understand what its like out there today.

I don't think it is a weird request since it is your child, but it would not bother me in the slightest if someone did this with my child. I would actually think it was cute.

I'd be very concerned for the child's safety, it would really bother me! Again, I'm a native nyc-er... but I there are plenty of perverts in the burbs too!

I prob wouldn't like it. But, I'm also not a fan of the storks/signs on the front lawn. Too much info, in my opinion. I'll stick with a few blue or pink balloons or a bow by my door.

I also dont think it would bother me. Especially if it is a lawn decoration for the holidays. I would think its adorable. But that just me. Grandpa is prob just excited to have a grandaughter on the way, and maybe thought it was meaningful. Something he can enjoy with you DD when she get older. I think if my dad did that and I flipped on him I would hurt his feelings. If it had a first and last name on the toy box maybe i wouldnt like that. But I dont see anything wrong with it Imo.

i agree. i think it's adorable. i wouldn't worry about safety or anything--the baby doesn't live there and people wouldn't even know for sure that's the baby's name for when she goes to visit. and since she's a baby, she's not going anywhere on her own.
i would love if my parents or in laws did something like that!
my son carries around a sippy cup with his name on it--it's physically in his hands so people could read it and see his name. doesn't bother me at all. i'm with him 100% of the time and honestly, if some nutcase is going to try to kidnap him, it's not going to be because he saw his name.

this is actually the reason we do not believe in the storks for the lawn either.. dh is a cop and is strongly against any names being on the front lawn.... same things goes for clothing with names on it...

I can see why you were a little surprised by it, but honestly, I think it's such a beautiful idea and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Of course, if you and your DH aren't comfortable with it, then that's how you feel- nothing wrong with that at all.

I don't blame you for feeling the way you do, but even as a native NYC girl, out of the things I am overly paranoid about, this is not it.
Doesn't mean you are wrong though. This is your child and your comfort level is what matters.

I wouldn't mind, i think it's cute he wanted to do that. Maybe see if he could change it to "grandpa's secret toy chest"......he's probably just excited, I wouldn't flip out on him for it, I'm sure he meant well but just explain what you'd like it to say instead.

I feel the same way about the storks but this is a lawn ornament on someone else's yard. Since the baby doesn't live there I wouldn't have an issue with it.

I don't understand how someone knowing the child's first name is a threat to their safety?
It's not like your home address, phone number and a map to your house is out there on the lawn.
It's just a name.. .what could someone do with that info?
I'm just curious- Maybe I'm not thinking it through....??

I think that it bothers me because i don't need every person driving by knowing her name. They live in a super nosey neighborhood and my MIL tells the world everything and god forbid anything is personal...but putting my kids name all of their front lawn....it just is not necessary and I would have been ****** if I showed up and it was on the front lawn and we didn't know in advance. I understand they were being nice, but make her a real toy box with her name...why does it have to be a lawn ornament????

I agree (actually on both points) but do think it's absolutely sweet especially since it's something he builds himself and puts so much effort into.

Sorry to be harsh but............I think you are overreacting. I wouldn't mind it at all. I think it's sweet actually and nobody will think anything of it. I doubt any "weirdos" will target the house because of a name on a Xmas decoration. I think that is being a little paranoid. Sorry but I do. I have my name, DH's and our DD's name on plaques outside our house for the holidays. It's cute. I really wouldn't be upset about it. Sounds to me he was trying to do something sweet for the holidays. Take it for what it's worth. 
EDIT - If I were your FIL I would be pretty hurt and upset that you made such a big deal over something that was meant to be a nice gesture and SO trivial in the grand scheme of things. I don't even think it was worth mentioning to him.

What's the difference? Balloons or a stork you are "advertising" that you have a baby either way. People are waaaaaaaaaay too paranoid these days. Times are not as different as people think. The difference from 30 years ago to today is we know TOO much nowadays thanks to the internet. There were crazies and weirdos 30 years ago too but you couldn't look them up online and see exactly what house they lived in like today. I am sorry but people need to lighten up a little. I refuse to raise my DD in a bubble out of fear of the big, bad world. I don't want her to grow up paranoid and afraid of her own shadow.
