Most of my family is from Franklin square and VS, and I still would never buy there. If they had the $ they would move out.
My godson goes to North and EVERY single week there is a street fight, and its not just fists anymore. One of my cousins sent their 2 sons to school there and when it was time for HS moved them to chaminade.
I would want someone to be honest with me. This is what I would do, drive by North at bell time.
Again, just my opinion !
Sorry...but that is absolutely ridiculous. And a bit of an exaggeration.
As far as "street fights", that is something that never (or very rarely) happens...or is never reported. And I honestly don't think it is something that could or would happen "every single week".
I have several friends that work there, TONS of friends who's children GO there, know people on the HS school board, and my close friend is friends with the principal, Mr. ODell. I have also been to countless HS board meetings, and have access to (through a friend) any and all police activity involving our school district. My neighbor (and friend) is on the Morton Civic Association (community group) and my best friend's husband is the President of the Norwood Park Civic Association (another FS community group in this part of FS). I am extremely active in the PTA, plus I live LITERALLY right up the road...I can SEE the school from my house. As I'm known by some in the area...I'm the resident "mayor" of the Dogwood section of FS.
Will children argue? Of course. Are there fights? I'm sure. I went to a strict Catholic high school...and there were fights. Is it something violent like what you are alluding to? Absolutely not...or at least, nothing that has ever been reported.
But...I'm not going to go on and on about my area or the district.
The schools get a "bad rap" for being in a district called Valley Stream...though this particular area of FS is NOWHERE near VS, we have no affiliation with VS, and we pay double (plus) the amount of taxes of VS. It was just the way boundary lines were drawn in the early 50's that put us in that district. Again, we are in the process of being absorbed into the FS District 17.
Again, to the OP...please feel free to FM me about any questions you have about the Dogwood Estates area. Good luck!

To the OP, one of the best things you can do is go outside of the school at dismissal and start talking to the parents. As well all opinions, take it as a grain of salt but that's where you'll get your best answers aside from the newsday and school testing sites.
On a side note, I'm surprised how many celebrities graduated from that school district. Steve Buscemi and a few others are from central also.
Normally I'd say that is an excellent way to judge a school...and it's DEFINITELY what I would do when assessing an elementary school.
But...high schools take in from many areas. Many children are bussed in to North as well as waiver in. Standing outside at dismissal is not a good indicator of the neighborhood...at all.
But I completely agree with speaking to people in the neighborhood! All she has to do is stand by Best Yet or Willow Road school and talk to parents. They will definitely help her make a good decision.

Thanks everyone for your advice! It's interesting to see and hear all the different opinions. I an going to ck out the school report and go to the school and talk to other parents. I do know that the area in FS (dogwood estates) as well as part of Malverne we looked in were beautiful. Its a shame that there is so much negativity around these areas. I hear it all the time and it upsets me.
Thanks again for your advice!!

The only students that are "bussed in" are special education students that require door to door transportation (and possibly ESL students but I am not sure about that). If parents choose to apply for the "waiver" for any of the high schools, they are still required to get them to and from school as there is no transportation in the schools. The schools (especially North and South) are operating with way more students then previously. They are definitely not taking in students from other districts, unless they are special education students.
The district is comprised of Valley stream (and parts of Valley Stream also go to Elmont btw), parts of Malverne, Franklin Square, Lynbrook, and Woodmere. The area is very diverse. There are MANY teachers in the district that graduated from the district and returned to teach in the district. I know that people have said it has "changed." Unfortunately, I think everywhere has changed. The programs are very rigorous and the students are getting a good education. I teach in the school district and while there are fights, personally, I saw more fights when I was in high school then I do now. I am not saying anything is perfect. You need to do your research about where you want to live. BUT...anything can happen anywhere. Just because you live in a "great" neighborhood doesn't mean your child is any less victim to the nonsense that goes on. Unfortunately, sometimes it is more, since parents sometimes look a blind eye. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to be involved and be active in your child's life!

That is great that YOU know people that like the area, but everyone I know does not, not sure why your view is valid and mine is "absolutely ridiculous. And a bit of an exaggeration". Three cousins, an aunt, and all their kids (6) live there , and ALL of them want out and if they had $ would leave in a second. Also, when i was considering moving from Queens to LI, all of them and their friends who also send there kids to that school district told me not to buy there.
I am pretty sure you are alluding to the fact that I am lying bc you are trying to defend YOUR choice in neighborhood. I am glad you like where you live, I don't. and I don't like the schools and many people I KNOW feel the same no need to call me names!
My godson gets into fights every week, because he, being the whitest white boy, is the minority.
Maybe if you moved you would be in a better mood

I am sorry, you are entitled to your own opinion... but i have to respectfully disagree with your statement here. There is nothing wrong with the neighborhood/s. I am talking about Malverne, NORTH Valley Stream and Dogwood section of FS. It’s a beautiful community with a lot of charm and nice people and nice homes. I spend a lot of time in these areas and go to the parks often and do not understand what the problem would be. If it is a racial thing, and I say this with all respect, it is a mostly a white community. Based on the community itself one would never expect there to be “issues” with the SD. It’s a great place for young families and for people who have to commute into the city every day for work. Like I stated in my previous post, it’s negativity like this that upsets me. I encourage everyone to drive around these areas and to visit the parks and you will be surprised to see just how beautiful and charming it is, especially Malverne. Unfortunately these areas get a bad rap because they are connected to other areas that (according to some)that is “not what is used to be”. It’s a shame but I guess in a way it makes it better. The less people know about these areas the quieter and charming it will stay.

Yup. I grew up in N. Valley Stream and was one of the privilged who went to Elmont. (yup.. I said it lol). I'm not saying it's the greatest area to live in but it's not S. Jamaica lol like everyone makes it out to be. I now live in Malverne (westwood section) and am zoned for VS #13.
Also to the OP, if you call the school district they will allow you to sit in on PTA meetings to get a better feel of the school community.

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, or Seaford.
I'm not expressing my opinion on those towns/those towns vs. others/etc. or anything; I'm just basing that off of what I've heard people say.

Yes Malverne is a lovely town with a pretty main street(killer bakery) and many of the residents are white but if you drive by the high school at dismissal, the majority of the students are not white. Many families send their kids to private school. Not saying its a bad thing but it is what it is.....

Re: Valley Stream North High School
I know nothing about VSN high school, but it seems as if some posters that live in this area are offended that other posters are speaking ill of their high school. Those posters keep saying what a beautiful area it is to live in. But the OP already said it's a nice area, she wants to know about the high school. If the high school pulls from different neighborhoods, then it stands to reason that you can't just look at the one neighborhood. For those posters saying that they have had or heard of negative experiences, they are entitled to their opinions. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's ridiculous. Just my 2 cents.

Valley Stream North High School
Someone is going to flame me for this....
.. But know ahead of time that I'm not saying this goes for anyone here on this board or what they have written in this thread..
Here goes.
I find that people who typically say "check out the school at bell time" ( again..NOT the people here.. I don't know how they think or view stuff)...are hinting towards race
All kids (most kids, not all) can be rowdy in groups at bell time.
Bunch of white kids? Fine
Buch of black kids? Hispanic kids? The mentality is "ugh. Bad area. Look at this riff raff."
White kids and black kids can be doing the exact same thing, using curse words, blasting music in cars, typical kid and teen stuff - but for some reason, black and Hispanic kids in groups - are viewed as rowdy/scary/bad kids.
This is not how I feel.
It's what I have observed of others and how they view things.
To me, it's wrong. It's unjust and all that.
But I can't help but feel its the truth of many people.
White kids hanging out in a neighborhood after school is viewed as an acceptable surburban nuisance. Black kids doing that are viewed as a dangerous mob.
It bothers me. I've witnessed it first hand.
People see what they CHOOSE to see. Not all the time, but sometimes.

Honestly this thread was really starting to annoy me. Its always the areas with blacks and other minorities that get the bad rap. If someone white exhibits the same behavior as someone black its is looked at differently, period.
ALL of the schools in valley stream district are ok, not the best but def not the worst either. Many of the students go on to lead very sucessful lives. I believe its what you make of it.

Yes, I am aware iof the Malverne Sd and that lakeview students attend. It is important to know that not all of Malverne is part of that SD. Part of Malverne also attends Dever and North.
I am sorry, my op was not meant to bring all this stuff up. I honestly just wanted to know about north high school.

He graduated in 1985. It's changed a lot since then. I had a great childhood there are well. It's just not a place where I wanted to stay and raise my kids, evidentially the same for Jim. All of my childhood friends moved out as well.
I was going to say the same thing about him He also would call in bomb threats to Green Acres Mall so he didn't have to go to work at Sears
We are in SD13 and our SD in Wheeler and Central.

Actually the VILLAGE of Valley Stream has a better reputation than North Valley Stream. I live in the Village right next to the Westwood area of Malverne. My MIL lives in Gibson which is part of the Hewlett SD. I'm not making this up, this is fact from people that live here.

As others have said, " "
I could certainly name a few areas that others label as "bad" just because they are diverse.
Absolutely true. Get this ALL the time 'cause we send our daughter to a "bad district"... it's so ridiculous.

Re: Valley Stream North High School
You are always going to get mixed reviews when you ask about an area. We drove around the area we were interested in all different times of the day. We stopped a police officer we saw driving around and asked some questions about the area, looked up school reviews etc. IMO and this is just ME I would not buy in VS or in FS, this is just my opinion. Good luck with your search!
