Utensils up or down....

Quick Q....do you place the forks, knives, etc. up or down in the dishwasher & why......

I always place them down & DH insists on putting them up & it seems I'm always cutting myself on the knives when I pull stuff out Chat Icon

From the Home forum. My response there:

We have a basket on bottom shelf. All utensils (except for serving spoons, spatulas, etc) are facing down. Keeps sharp blades and tines away from your hands. Hands stay cleaner putting dirty dishes in. Dirty food doesn't slide down the handle, and possibly make the entire utensil dirty.
Since the knives and forks are face down for safety reasons, it just makes sense to have everything face the same way.

Bigger items are face up, mainly because they won't fit if they are bowl-side down.

Handles up so my hands don't get filthy putting the utensils in, and so I don't contaminate the utensils when I take them out. Even if I wash my hands, if you are a guest at my house, do you want to watch me grab a fork by the tines from the dishwasher, then give it to you to use?..... Chat Icon

Re: Utensils up or down....

All with handles down, even sharp knives, but they go in the back 2 slots, always, so we know they're there and don't get cut.

I jsut feel they get cleaned better that way. And I take them out by the handles when they're clean, I don't touch the part you eat with!

Re: Utensils up or down....

i would only worry about putting them facing up if the dishwasher wasn't getting them clean - ours does and i put them facing down all the time.

I put everything in the baskets going down.

ETA: so when they are clean and unpacking, I am taking them out by the handles, not the part I eat off.

With all these responses, i thought I was a freak or something. I put all utensils facing down. I like to be able to pull them out by the handle.

Re: Utensils up or down....

i throw them in whichever way they happen to be facing when i grab them to put them in - is that really weird?? Chat Icon when i go to put them away i take the whole case that holds them out of the dishwasher so i never hurt myself b/c they are eye level and i take my time with them.

then i just grab the forks in one bunch - straighten them and put them away, knives, spoons, etc.

Re: Utensils up or down....

DH and I always argue about this! I put sharp knives UP so they don't cut the utensil holder thing! they cut right through when they face down!
