Does your 18-month old use utensils?

My DS is 18-months old and he can only kind-of-sort-of use a spoon. He wants to feed himself, but he doesn't really get anything in his mouth. I haven't even tried giving him a baby fork yet (I don't even know if they make those).

Is this really bad? Should I be pushing this?

My DS is 15 months and can use a fork pretty well. He can use a spoon sort of...if it's something that sticks, fine. If it's corn or little pieces, not so good but he tries. I don't remember my other 2 being as adept at this age though.

Same here. DD is 15 months and we give her both a kiddie spoon at fork at dinner and she knows how to spear her food with the fork and she's actually pretty good at it! The spoon is another story. She places the stuff on the spoon with her fingers and then uses it Chat Icon

my daughter is 19 months now but has been using a fork and spoon for awhile. she does really well. but now she wants my fork and spoon and wont use the kiddie ones anymore. you have to see this kid shovel in the oatmeal. its picture worthy. and my dad taught her to twirl pasta on the spoon too.

My DS is 20 months and uses a baby fork and spoon rather well. He needs a little help getting the food onto the utensil, but will not let me feed him AT ALL anymore. He must do it himself. Bittersweet, yet relieving all at once... Chat Icon

Sara loves using utensils . IF she has yogurt she refuses to let me feed her - she has to do it herself.

Ava feeds herself with a spoon really well and needs no help from me. She's just about getting the hang of the fork. She finally knows to stab the food to pick it up. She's 14 months. You just have to keep giving them the opportunity.

My girls are 18 months and they really don't use the fork very well. I give it to them but they kind of attempt to use it and then it always ends up on the floor..i guess i should practice with them more..

DD is 15mo, and she tries to use a spoon. She's relatively good at it, especially for semi-liquids (applesauce, mashed potatoes, pudding, etc) Pieces of food, she'd rather pick up with her fingers.

DS (4yo) used to (still does sometimes) pick up food with his hands, then put in on the fork or spoon, then put the utensil in his mouth..... "A for effort, honey, but I think you're missing the point....." Chat Icon

My son is 19 months and I am so proud of him, he uses a fork and a spoon and he TRIES to use a (plastic) knife. Love it.

Although he puts his rigitoni on the handle of the fork...
