Re: Utensils?
Emily loved feeding herself off of the spoon at around 5 months. We would put the food on, hand her the spoon, and she'd put it right in her mouth and eat it.
Then she went through a very LONG phase where she wanted nothing to do with utensils and only wanted "finger foods."
Now at 14 month she's showing interest in feeding herself with spoons again, but in the more normal way, where we put the bowl in front of her, hold onto it for dear life so she doens't throw it overboard, and she sticks the spoon in and feeds herself.
I want to get her this special spoon that is like a round bulb with little nooks, like slots on it, that are supposed to hold all of the food (like yogurt) so that she can feed herself more easily, but most likely I'll never get it and we'll just keep doing what we're doing.

not to hijack the thread b/c I don't know the answer to the original question but I figured it's never too early to try so I bought the dippers, which I think is what you're describing Melissa and be glad you didn't buy them yet b/c it's not doing anything to teach Ellie to "feed" herself as far I can tell. She loves it but all she views it as is as a teething/chew toy which is only in Mommy's way when I try to feed her love these clever products they come up with to help us
