UPDATE Would you take an induction if it was offered?

I had a growth sono last week and baby was measuring at 90 percentile. Prior to having the sono, my doc said we will talk about inductions, if she even believes it will be necessary etc at my next appt (which is tomorrow).

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and honestly, I would love an induction. I am a planner and I would have so much less anxiety if I knew what to expect, when to expect it etc.

DH was with me until yesterday when he says he changed his mind and doesn't want to "rush" the baby. He likened it to picking a fruit off a tree too early Of course he says he would have no problem if the doctor says we have to do an induction because of x, y, z but he doesn't want me to ask for it just because I'm done being pregnant, I want to plan, or I am scared baby is getting too big.

WWYD? Would you get an induction if it was offered? Even if DH disagreed?

UPDATE: just had doc appt and after putting in all my risk factors in the computer, my risks came back very low so doc will not induce and let me go as long as 41 weeks. If I'm still pregnant, I'll get another growth sono and see if a c section will be necessary or induction.

Best thing for me he said was that I go into labor soon by myself. time to up all the natural remedies

I also got my first internal and my membranes swept (ouch!!!!). Hopefully that moves something along. I'm also 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Better than nothing

IDK....thats a rough one for me...I guess it depends on when the dr want to induce and how I feel...I would try to do everything else first to induce labor naturally

massage
acupuncture
spicy food
sex...(although I dont think dh would lol)

As much as I feel your pain...I think I agree with your DH. If you and baby are doing fine then I wouldnt rush it.

Personally, I don't want to be induced early. I have heard too many stories of early induction that have ended up in c-sections and I would like to avoid a c-section if I can.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against an indcuction. I was induced with DD, but I was a week late. And it went as perfect as I could ask for.

I feel the same as you; I am a planner and would love to be induced. I have the option to and my DH says he doesn't want me to be induced now. Let's see how he feels if he were prego...i kid. I see his point but still....good luck. I know I was not a lot of help! :)

There are two major schools of thought on this:

(1) the body knows what to do

and

(2) if there's any potential danger to baby or mom, get the baby OUT

My OB started talking induction at 39 weeks but was going to schedule it for 40 w or between 40 & 41 weeks. I went into labor on my own at 39+5 and delivered one day early.

I have a close friend who suffered a very late term loss. She is a HUGE proponent of inductions, and I honestly trust her and value her opinion on the matter for many reasons (one being that she's a delivery & PP nurse).

Personally, I wanted a drug-free labor and it was very important to me to try. My understanding was that it's nearly impossible to have a drug-free labor with an induction (although I know someone who did). If you know you're going to get the epidural anyway, this isn't a concern for you.

I trust doctors. If your baby is already 90th percentile, and odds are that you may end up with an emergency c section if you wait longer, then perhaps an induction is a good idea (rather than laboring for days and then ending up with a c). Although, also, many inductions end up with a c because the body's not ready to deliver and the baby's hr drops during the induction from the meds causing the body to go into labor.

There are so many sides to this... if it were as simple as: doctor give you some meds and suddenly you're ready to have a baby, it would be so much simpler. I think the best thing to do would be for you and your husband to sit down with your OB and discuss ALL these issues and see what he says. What happens if the induction fails? How many days in labor before a c section? How do they induce? Do they just do the cervidil and see if it dilates you and sends you into labor on your own? Do they do cervidil/pitocin? How often do inductions end in c's? Why does your OB find you to be a good candidate for an early induction? What happens if you wait? Is there any danger in either case?

Good luck with your decision!!! It's definitely not an easy one to make, but I'm sure together you will make the right one!

As much as I feel your pain...I think I agree with your DH. If you and baby are doing fine then I wouldnt rush it.

I wouldn't do it. Unless the doc said the baby is way too big and we need to get her out ASAP I would wait until Im actually late to be induced.

I agree with your DH. If there is a reason for an induction, I wouldn't hesitate. But, I wouldn't get one without there being a legitimate need for it. Also, as far as I know, inductions are most likely to be successful when your body is close to ready and it only needs a little push. There's a chart my doc had up in the office showing when inductions had the greatest likelihood of being successful. it had to do with how dilated and effaced you are and what level the baby is at. If you aren't dilated or effaced, and baby is still fairly high, i think an induction would have a low chance of working.

i defintely would not; escp if baby and I are ok.

when i was pregnant with DD#1 my doc joked around and asked me around 39w4d if i wanted to come in that weekend. i said nah ill wait :)

and then my water broke but i had no contractions so when i went to the hospital they wanted to start me on pitocin to induce labor i asked if they could give me time. and what do you know 3 hrs later DD was born, no epidural, no inductino, nada.
i think majority of the time we have to let nature take its course.
obviously when the baby is in danger - get them out ASAP - but just for the sake of getting the baby out - No

i just found out that a friends freidn whose original EDD was 4/16 - then changed to 4/6 - just scheduled her induction for this thursday the baby is only 5.5 lbs..... she is already done being pregnant....
I dont think its for us to decide when we are done being pregnant.
ofcourse my 2 cents.
And heck I have a very active 31 month old toddler running around and i dont see myself asking for an induction!!!

i was induced w/ my first, and will avoid it at all costs this time if i can. it sends you into very. very painful contractions, and DS wound up not breathing and was in the NICU for a week. from speaking to friends, it seems like there is a much higher incidence of NICU with an induction. it was also such a long, long process--a 40 hour labor, and on the epidural for 20 hours+. I couldn't feel one of my legs for a year following the induction due to the epidural being in for so long.

just curious what is the 90% percent size wise....dd was in the 95% from birth until she was off the chart by 2yrs old
she was 1 week early and 8lbs 11oz

also my friends dr said her baby was going to be really big...over 9lbs so she opted for a c-section and her daughter was only 7lbs so you never know...

I've heard the same thing about inductions winding up as unplanned C-sections, so I feel the same way. I, personally, wouldn't do it unless I was already a week or 2 late...

I'm 40 weeks 1 day.

My baby has been measuring "on the big side" my entire pregnancy.

I'm DONE being pregnant.

I am still waiting and have not asked for an induction.

I delivered 2, 8 plus pound babies. Which for me at 5' 3", is pretty big, with no problems.

So, no. At 38 weeks, I would not ask for an induction unless it was medically necessary.

I was induced with both of my children and will most likely be induced with this one too. My cervix never thins or dilates on its own. Its "stubborn" my doctor says. LOL Even with Cervadil nothing really happened.

My babies all measure large and I was induced days after my due date with both. Both were large 8lb.-ers. Also my fluids had decreased.

I didn't think labor was so awful on Pitocin, but I know no other way. lol Also, my doctor knew I was trying to avoid a C-section.

An induction just seems to work for me but everyone is different.

I was successfully induced with all three of my children. My OB would not induce unless my cervix was at least 2-3 cm and softened. I was induced at 39.5 weeks with all three.

I don't know - I was induced - at OUUUUUUUCH the cervadil hurt - and they said if it didn't take they were going to have to repeat it.

No way. I was induced at 38 weeks for medical reasons. I would not have an elective induction especially before 40 weeks. I had a long induction and I never progressed past 4-5 cm. I eventually had a c-section.

I think let nature take its course. You still have a couple of weeks to go. My doctor also told me that my DD was about 8.5 pounds and she was 6lbs. 15oz at birth!
