I cannot believe this...I got offered a teaching job!
So, I had my first interview this morning at a private school. I fully expected it to be informational, and a way for me to gain experience with ed interviews since I am alternate route, etc. Well, it was for a Pre-k position and they offered me the teaching assistant position since I don't have classroom experience! I was shocked. I have to give the principal an answer by Monday. It would mean I would be making half what I make now but I could supplement it with after school programs etc. The real dilemma is my DH....I know he wants me to be happy but I know he'll be worried about $. If I continue working as a corporate slave I am going to get premature gray hair. If I accept this position I feel like I will be truly happy, get much needed experience and be 10 MINUTES from home (you see, Cheryl? your *dust* worked! )
What do you guys think?

Congratulations. I think you should do what will make you happy. If you are not happy where you currently work, it will...in the long run, affect your home.

It would definately provide you with valuable experience! Unfortunately not many schools will hire you if you don't have experience! Good luck on whatever you decide!

Re: I cannot believe this...I got offered a teaching job!
Jen I'm soooo excited for you!!
You know my thoughts!! It's a foot in the door and a way to gain experience in a school. Will they pay for classes and things? Most schools do and you could continue to rack up credits for more experience too!
If you guys can make it work financially, I say GO FOR IT!! It will help your quality of life so much and maybe even help with your other little project (TTC!!)
But definitely sit down and figure out exactly what it's going to do to your lifestyle.
Congratulations!! And Best of Luck making your decision!!

Jen - Congratulations that is great news.
I think you should do what will make you happy. Thats it plain and simple. You have been miserable at what you have been doing. You will make the money situation work - everyone always does. Lots of Luck to you.

WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!
That is TERRIFIC NEWS!!! I know you'll make the right decision as to what is best for you. But I'm sure you know my feelings that quality of life is more important. Being happy and less stressed vs. being miserable with more money is definitely that way to go! Oh and 10 minutes away WOW. You'll have a new life!!! also don't forget to factor into the salary how much you'll be saving by not commuting w/train & subway!
LOL- how much do you want to make a bet that as soon as we start these jobs (if you take it) we'll be able to get PG because we're less stressed!

Thanks guys
Let's hope the hubby thinks along the same line as you guys
I would hate to give up such an awesome opportunity...I felt a real connection with the principal and felt like this was just handed to me.

That's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it *****, but sometimes people have to put in their year of "paying their dues". i did a leave replacement for a year... then had to change districts... my friend is subbing, but she's getting experience.
After that year of experience, so many doors opened up for me. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I cannot believe this...I got offered a teaching job!
Jen...that is so great! I agree with everyone else....if you can afford to take th pay cut....take the job. Being 10 minutes from home will give you a whole new life without commuting, etc. You will save thousands on that alone so you need to factor that into your descision. Congrats again!

Congrats! As long as you guys can pay bills and live comfortably then you should go for it. If it means that you cut out going out to eat or a trip here and there, it's definitely worth it. Your quality of life will definitely improve.

Re: I cannot believe this...I got offered a teaching job!
If education is the field you want to be in, then TAKE IT!!! Yes, the money will be less, but the education that you would get is amazing! Teaching is the field that you learn more ON THE JOB and sometimes I wish I got more of that on the job experience. Do it. It will help you in the long run and yes, you can have a side job, too! Congrats!!!

Re: I cannot believe this...I got offered a teaching job!
So after discussing it with DH, we went over our finances (and as most of you know, we bought a house in NJ last year) I don' t think I am going to be able to accept. I was SO excited and hopeful...but we worked it out to be a $30 THOUSAND dollar a year pay cut. At this point, we can't afford to take that risk. I decided that I physically and emotionally do not want to work in the city anymore. I get home too late to even attempt to go to school at night!
So I am going to continue looking, maybe get a district TA position (might pay more) or maybe even work part time in HR and subsitute teach on the other days. Plus try to go to school in the spring.
But at least I know what I want and that I am capable of making the change!
