delta nt? yes... what range should tha be?

Fetal nuchal translucency thickness increases with crown–rump length and therefore it is essential to take gestation into account when determining whether a given translucency thickness is increased....

It is measured in mm. Essentially it should be under 3mm...

I agree with the PP. The nuchal translucency is the most important indicator....

mine is way lower then that - - is there a too low number?

Re: ultrascreen - not happy

my delta NT is is below 1. (it doesnt say what it is measured in mm or so. )

my bloodwork seems to be the thing off.... high free beta hcg
and lower papp-a

but blood work is better to the reason for risk then

Babies with Down Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities have a greater risk of heart defects...it is believed that this is what causes the increase in fluid.

One of the diagnostic signs of Down Syndrome at birth, aside from the facial characteristics , is an increased fat pad at the back of the neck.

The NT is done before 14 weeks b/c after that time the lymphatic system is likely to have developed sufficiently to drain away any excess fluid. (has to do with the placenta)

Re: ultrascreen - not happy

After my ultrascreen [that was done at Madonna's Babylon office] and my results were fine, I was sent to genetic counseling due to family history of DS and mental retardation. It was very informative and actually made me feel a little better. I still wanted to get an amnio so that I know with 99.9% certainty what was going on with my baby. But insurance wouldn't pay so my next step was the Quad Screen.

I had the quad screen and my numbers were fine. Then I had the Level II and something was found on my baby's heart that was a marker for DS. This is what allowed me to get the amnio. I would finally have actual results and not a ratio [which drove me crazy btw.] Now, after all of the blood work and sonos, I know for certain [as certain as I could know] that the baby is fine.

If you are nervous about getting an amnio, I would do all of the steps necessary before doing one: genetic counseling, Quad Screen and Level II sono. A doctor's office will not redo the ultrascreen. Your risk is calculated on the finger prick blood test done along with the nuchal fold measurement [from the back of the neck.] Good luck!! Chat Icon

Great number!! Chat Icon Chat Icon It sucks being a ball of nerves and not knowing what everything means. For DH and I, genetic counseling really laid everything out to us. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I beleive the nuchal thickness varies according to how far along you are, in what is what they would like to see. But I thought they want to see nuchal thickness less than 2 in general (not 3)?

I have always heard less than 2 is ideal. Never 3.

That's great!!!

So it does sound like it can go up to 3mm, to be in range. As I said above, it does vary according to where you are b/c it does increase as the baby grows.

Great link!

Thanks for this. My measurement was 1.8 or 1.9 and I was getting a little nervous. But I had the ultrascreen at 13w6d so that helps explain why it may be higher than others on here. Chat Icon

3mm is the range but my genetic counselor told me they want the measurements to be under 2mm (when combined with positive blood test).......

Nuchal translucency normally increases with gestational age...the larger the crown-rump length the larger the NT.

Average measurement at 11 weeks is closer to 1 where as at 13 weeks 6 days it's closer to 2...(again that is the median average there is a range)

What one must truly understand is that while the doctors/science recognize that an increase in NT is indicative of a chromosomal abnormalities they dont really fully understand why this is the case..so that leaves room for a margin of error...

PS....I have a child with Down Syndrome so I pretty much know the ins and outs of the testing...

Re: ultrascreen - not happy

My ultrascreen results were 1 in 165, and I was 28 so they shouldve been 1 in 750. My dr. said that they "recommend" an amnio for anyone who is 1 in 200 or below.
We got the paperwork and Papp-a numbers were off. We went to see a genetic counselor who basically just layed out the statistics for us. There is a less than 1 % chance of miscarriage with amnio, but our results also meant a less than 1% chance of a baby with DS. When you are pregnant, the DS risk seems exaggerated as does the miscarriage rate...we just couldnt understand why the numbers would be off.
We ended up having the amnio because I was so stressed that I thought it would be worse for the baby to have me be stressed for the rest of my pregnancy and I wanted to be prepared to care for a special needs child if I needed to. I cried throughout the amnio because I wasnt sure if I was doing the right thing and was so afraid of miscarrying.
I now have a beautiful, healthy 6 month old girl with no problems at all. The ultrascreen test is garbage to me, I will never take it again in future pregnancies. I have heard too many stories of women(including me)freaking out because of the "risk", yet I havent heard of anyone who took the test and got poor results ending up with DC with DS...of course it is possible, yet they end up scaring people unnecessarily.
There is nothing that can make someone feel better because you always think you will be the 1 in whatever that it happens to.
I even remember feeling guilty that if my baby had DS that I had been so sad with the ultrascreen results because then I had been sad about my baby whom I already loved.
The only thing that made me feel a little better is to think that the autism rate is like 1 in 140(or something like that) so basically there is the same risk of having an autistic child, yet there is no test for it so nobody worries about it. That put it into perspective a little bit for me.
Good Luck with your decision. Sorry so long.

ETA: My dr. said that the quad screen does not test for DS and that you should have the amnio done by the 18th week which is before the anatomy scan...so neither of those options were helpful...plus they wont do further blood tests because whatever made the bloodwork off on the first test, would make it off on the second as well.

so i am gonna call him and ask him for babys measurements, folds size, etc right. he didnt tell me anything...
while i do have bloodwork, how can i tell the normal range..? also my sheet says my ultrascreen was 12 weeks when indeed it was 12 weeks 5 days. does that matter?

I believe it does matter. Levels change as the pg progresses and 5 days is a LOT. I know of a few peopel who got bad results, only to find out they had the wrong due date in the computer, making the blood work skew out of range.

Where did you have this done? I wish they would have informed you more, you are stressing out b/c they didn't counsel you enough. You are entitled to counseling when you get the results b/c they can be very overwhelming, understandably so.Chat Icon

Yes you are entitled to genetic counseling and Madonna has it. I would request this so then you could sit down with someone and talk over your results before you make any decisions. I am sorry you are going through this. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: ultrascreen - not happy

I had a similar experience to JustBrowsin....I had an ultrascreen that came back 1/75 for DS due to blood work only (low PapA). We met with a specialist at the facility we had the test done at who went over our options (similar to what a genetic counselor would do, they review the results and present options). We ended up having an amnio, and everything was perfectly fine......so I know how scary it can be. I would encourage you to meet with a counselor, who will be able to review everything with you----I think if someone can in detail go over the report with you, while it will not take your worry totally away, it will at least make you feel less confused about this whole situation. DH & I have discussed if we will ever do this test again and are leaning towards not doing it. I also posted about this back when I was pregnant, and just in this forum there were quite a few of us who all went thru the same thing.
