Re: ultrascreen - not happy

so i am gonna call him and ask him for babys measurements, folds size, etc right. he didnt tell me anything... while i do have bloodwork, how can i tell the normal range..? also my sheet says my ultrascreen was 12 weeks when indeed it was 12 weeks 5 days. does that matter?
I believe it does matter. Levels change as the pg progresses and 5 days is a LOT. I know of a few peopel who got bad results, only to find out they had the wrong due date in the computer, making the blood work skew out of range.
Where did you have this done? I wish they would have informed you more, you are stressing out b/c they didn't counsel you enough. You are entitled to counseling when you get the results b/c they can be very overwhelming, understandably so.

12 weeks is ok...the ultrascreen is usually done between 11w4d - 13w3d....
The normal ranges should be all around 1....free beta higher than 1 and paap (protein) lower than 1 will give you higher risk....

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
First I would talk to the doctor again and ask the specific questions about the fold.
Then, I would ask for the quad screen. This test is a basic bloodtest that tests for 4 things - including spina bifida (AFP), and gives a few more percentage points on accuracy of the DS/trisomy numbers. They couple this with the ultrascreen results to give you an updated number. I would opt to have this done before an amnio.
In the big picture, the chance of your baby having an abnormality is still extremely low.

No she means they have her "due date" wrong. She was 12 weeks 5 days, not just 12 weeks. This could be an issue, they need to know exactly where you are in the pg for hte blood work to be interpreted correctly.

i am getting my results faxed to me in the next couple minutes. so i will let u know. i am really having an extremely hard time w/ this. i really want another test before i opt for amnio. (becuase of all the false positives)
I would want to know the nuchal fold thickness for sure. That I believe is way more accurate than the blood work. My dr told me that the measurements are more valid than the bloodwork.
i just received the fax.... its one page and doesnt say anything about folds... just papp-a hcg, delta.... should i call dr and ask the nuchal fold thickness?
Absolutely. Didn't they tell you when they were doing the measurements how things looked physically (in range, out of range, etc)?
For ex, my nuchal fold was 1.2
If a tech (not a doctor) was doing the sono, then he/she wouldn't be allowed to share results any more than , "everything looks great." Only a doctor can share those types of data with the patient.
I agree to call the doctor to find out what brought your results down.

She was doing her job- taking measurements. I'm sure everything did look great. It's against the law for her to provide interpretations any more than that.

Don't most places make a dr come in afterwards to check things? I know my tech had a dr come in to ok things.

No, I mean a dr comes in to check the physical measurements of the sonogram. Not referring to the total results including the BW (which wasn't ready yet for you).

Both times, a tech took the measurements, printed pictures to attach to the file and then sent me on my way...a doctor never came into the room, though they could have reviewed the sonogram pictures printed

Depends on where you have the ultrascreen done. I had mine at a genetics center and got the results a week later at my regular OB appointment.

Ok the tech probably called the dr in for me b/c I had an issue (fibroid) that she wanted a double check on. I wasn't sure if that was standard practice or just in my case. THanks.

That's exactly why the doctor came in. I have a number of large fibroids and anytime I had sonos a doctor was called in. I've since learned to alert the tech, "Hey- I have some big fibroids in there" so they don't freak out. Since I've started doing that, they rarely call in a doctor.

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
I didn't have a Dr. come in during my ultrascreen sono. The tech just did her thing, then the nurse did my finger prick test and I was told I would get the results sometime in a week. My tech also said that everything "looked good." Honestly, if they are not allowed by law to tell you anything, then they should really just say that, they shouldn't be telling you things look good or bad if they don't really know.

I am sorry this is happening to you...I also HAD to have genetic counseling before my amnio (waste of time, didn't learn anything new-but she did go over the results) but my doctor was nice enough to go over the full results first before I met with her.....
can you go and see your doctor in person? I am sure if you see him he will have to tell you all the results!

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
Ok, don't freak out just yet, 1 in 125 is still good odds. Have the doctor do the AFP Quadscreen first to get those tests, and question the date on the original screen.
What the test means that 1 in out of 125 women with your same weight, height, pregnancy date, blood type, age etc will have a baby with Downs.
But that also means 124 out of 125 won't.
I know how stressful these tests can be.

Fetal nuchal translucency thickness increases with crown–rump length and therefore it is essential to take gestation into account when determining whether a given translucency thickness is increased....
It is measured in mm. Essentially it should be under 3mm...
I agree with the PP. The nuchal translucency is the most important indicator....
