ultrascreen - not happy
ok- I am freaking.... my ultrascreen is 1 out of 125 chance of a baby w/ downs. i know there are mucho false positives but i cannot handle this. nothing at all has been easy from the start....... needing insemination to low progesterone to spotting etc.
did anyone ever get a 2nd ultrascreen (like a do-over?) (maybe i had an idiot doing mine) my office uses a madonna tech come into the office. i would prefer to get a 2nd ultrascreen b4 i opt for amnio. any ideas at all?

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
They will probably have you do the Quad-Screen first before an amnio to further check for any abnormalities. Sorry you're going through that. I am sure everything will turn out okay.

It was the blood test I had about 3 weeks or so after my Ultra Screen. It is suppose to give a more accurate picture of the probability of any abnormalities. I would ask the dr. about it. I'm pretty sure most of the girls on here have had it done. It may give you a better idea of what's going on and if the amnio is necessary.

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
I had my quad screen last week at 18 weeks. I would definitely ask my doctor about that if you're concerned about the amnio.
Good Luck to you!

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
You have FM!
Also, doctors don't do any repeat blood tests or sonos, they go by the ultrascreen results.....it is then up to you if you want an amnio or not.....if you don't do the amnio, you will get the triple test (at 16weeks) and then the Level II sono....

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
Sorry about what you are going through. I'm in the same boat (IVF, staining...etc). My results came back as 1:66. I don't think there is a "do-over" but the next test you will do before amnio is looking for spina bifida (I believe that's the quad screen).
I actually opted for the amnio (being 37) just to make sure. I would suggest speaking over your options w/your Dr. and asking him/her to explain the quad screen in detail so you're fully informed.
In the meantime good luck. I will for you. I'm sure all will be fine!

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
Just for some perspective, my friend had the ultrasreen and it came back 1 in 10 chance Then she had the blood work and it dropped to 1 in 5 She refused the amnio since this wonderful, brave lady said she was having it anyway. Low and behold, a perfect baby girl- no abnormalities to speak of-
Try not to worry- 1 in 125 is NOT as bad as it sounds.

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
1/125 means you have a .008 chance of having a child with chromosomal abnormalities. That's less than 1%.
The "current" national statistics of miscarriage from amnio is approximately 1/200 but varies from practice to practice. At my practice here in Baltimore, their personal stats were 1/800. Check with Madonna and find out their stats. That might help you to make a decision.
I had an amnio a few weeks ago and got a clean bill of health for my DD.
Good luck to you and whatever you decide to do.

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
How were the "physical measurements"?
Sometimes the blood work alone can cause a bad result and the blood work is more likely to be a false + than the physical measurements.
So what was the nuchal fold, how was that?

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
I had an Ultrascreen 2 (that is what is said on the paper) at about 16 weeks and they added those numbers in with the ones from the Ultrascreen to give me a more updated number. I am sorry you are going through this. My numbers after the Ultrascreen came back to be like 1 out of 750 or so and they told me that if it didn't reach to 1 out of 1000 that they would have me do an amnio. Luckily after the Ultrascreen 2 results my risk was lower and came back 1 out of 1250.
Also I would ask what exactly threw the Ultrascreen numbers into a riskier range. Was it the nuchal fold or the blood results. From what I have read the nuchal fold is typically a more accurate item to focus on, particularly because the follow up test is bloodwork only.

Re: ultrascreen - not happy
I'm not sure if the Dr. will do a repeat test it is worth asking. The only thing to be aware of is the Ultrascreen has to be down in a certain time frame, my DR said it has to be done before 13w5d.

I would want to know the nuchal fold thickness for sure. That I believe is way more accurate than the blood work. My dr told me that the measurements are more valid than the bloodwork.

This is what scared me about having the test in the first place, I was really more afraid of a false positive than there being anything wrong with the baby.
Good luck with the results, I hope you are able to give some more information from them

Absolutely. Didn't they tell you when they were doing the measurements how things looked physically (in range, out of range, etc)?
For ex, my nuchal fold was 1.2

Try to get the actual measurement. Blood test results can totally be false posities, more than normal measurements of physical aspects.
So the blood test is probably what is giving you those odds. Have you spoken to your dr about this yet?

I agree...my baby's measurement was 0.98 which was great....our blood results were the one that gave us the false positive....I would definitely call the doctor and ask....
