They intentionally tried to trick a hospital into divulging information regarding the health of a patient...in other words they willfully and knowingly attempted to get a medical worker to breach doctor patient confidentiality AND they did so in regards to a royal. it was very stupid on their part.
I don't believe this for a minute. Like they said- they thought someone would hang up on them the minute they heard the ridiculous accents. And a person barking in the background? This is what happens with most prank phone calls- they call and push buttons (figuratively) until they get hung up on. I doubt they were actually trying to get "privileged information on a royal" or to get anyone in trouble or worse.
I'm sorry, I feel really bad for the family, but to say this is cruel or that they should be held accountable is ridiculous to me.
If they didn't actually want to publicly air the privileged information (which they requested), they could have opted not to play it on their show. They should have stopped when it went further than they intended. They obviously knew it wasn't right. This wasn't the typical radio station prank IMO.

if that wasn't their intention then they should have hung up instead of continuing to be put through and continue to ask questions. They wanted to see how far they could run with it. Why else would you call a hospital? what information did they think they could gain had the "prank" gone well? they bragged about it all week on their twitter and page
Most prank phone calls end with the "victim" getting angry, cursing the prank caller out, and hanging up. THAT's that point of a prank phone call. That's a prank phone call gone "well." It's not to "gain information." I doubt they thought they'd seriously get through so they probably just went with it. The point was to get a laugh on the radio. I bet if most of you had been listening along, you would've laughed too.
It's sad that she chose to take her life, but again, I don't think there were any cruel intentions here.

I doubt that she took her life because of this incident. I would imagine there were underlying issues that existed long before this phone call.

From what I read, this nurse was not the one whose voice is on most of the recording- she was the one who picked up the call and put it through to the one who actually gave the info.
And there is a lot of speculation that William wanted both nurses fired. He does like to threaten lawsuits, and in this case, would you blame him for wanting at least the second nurse fired? She really should have known better, especially since that hospital often has royal patients.

I'm sorry but I don't think anyone could expect someone committing suicide over this as even a remote possibility. The fact that the radio station was completely wrong to do this has nothing to do with the fact that the nurse's reaction was so bizarre. There is imo a lot more to the story regarding the nurse's mental health. You don't up and kill yourself over falling for a prank.

I have to agree. That one prank call could not possibly lead someone to take their life. I just cant believe that. It is a tragedy though and my prayers go out to her family.

i heard it when it first came out and i didn't laugh. My thoughts were "leave the poor girl alone while she's in a hospital bed and trying to cling to whatever shred of privacy she has left" The media needing to be informed of every lttle detail is what got princess diana killed. what if they had been patched through directly to kate middleton? would they have continued on with the prank while she's recovering in the hospital? it's an overstep of boundaries IMO. You wanna play a prank there are plenty of other places to prank besides a HOSPITAL. It was in poor taste and a bad decision.
I definitely don't think anyone could foresee just how badly this would end...i'm not blaming them for her choice to commit suicide...but they definitely played a part in the events that led to her decision. I also don't think too much more had to be underlying...this is a woman who was well known and liked throughout her profession. She prided herself on her professionalism and her duty to her patients. Not only was she made out to be a laughing stock due to her mistake but there must be some shame in feeling like she failed her ROYAL patients...the FUTURE QUEEN. Maybe there were other things in her life...but for her to commit suicide just 1 week after this incident is not a coincidence.

It's been a WEEK? This is the first I've heard of the prank. If it were that heinous of a prank, it would've been splashed all over the internet a week ago. It would've been splashed all over LIF a week ago. The only thing, IMO, that made it so horrible was the fact that this woman committed suicide and that's not their fault.
I hear everything you're saying, but we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I feel that way about most of the pictures I see of her. Like William "rushing to his ailing wife's bedside" photos and the photo of her leaving the hospital. But I can't apply this sentiment to this prank call because I don't believe they actually were trying to get information on or to speak to Kate Middleton.

It happened Tuesday morning but I think I first heard about it yesterday or the day before.

Impersonating a royal to gain information that would otherwise be private or classified should be illegal. They should be in trouble for what they did...but because they are from australia and not governed by the queen i don't know how that would work.

I'm curious to see what happens because the queen does govern Australia somewhat ; they are part of the commonwealth. I can't see anything happening really, but I wonder if something will be said.
The same radio show had problems a few years ago. There were two DJs, Kyle and Jackie O, who did a morning show. There was a mother and daughter on, and the mother wanted to know if the daughter was sexually active. So they did a lie detector test and it turned out she was raped when she was 12. And the DJ kept going on with questions. It was a big story in Australia, and if memory serves me correct, the DJ was fired or suspended.I forget exactly.
I don't blame the DJs, but I do think they crossed the line with the subject matter. I mean, what if something was seriously wrong?
It's sad that the woman killed herself

sad.. suicides always are
and to be clear.. it can happen with just one event. It doesnt take much. You never can know the pain and suffering a person can put themselves through. Pain is by far the most personal thing in the world. Each person handles it differently and it can be caused by something that may not cause others a bit of worry. What may seem trivial to one is life damaging to another.
I feel for her pain and her stress..
I feel sad for her family because i'm sure they suffered before and now again.
Its just sad. period.

Southern Cross Austereo, the company that owns the station, released a statement reported by TMZ, which says, "SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital. [...] SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."

The nurse violated Hippa laws(privacy laws) to the Royal family..I'm sure the hospital told her she was fired and possibly losing her nurses license.. She made an innocent mistake which lead to losing her career..She wasn't thinking rationally..she was probably so distraught over what happened..I feel so horrible for her family
