TWO word sentences? when?

DS is almost 20 months.. he labels everything and is a parrot.. he repeats everything!! But the only two word things he says are:

Thank you= which is "Do do"

Little Bear= biddle bear

fresh beat=be beat (i know..stretching but I know he means that)

If he asks for more of something he'll say "more" (and sign it at the same time..so cute) and I'll say

"say More Please" and hell just say "please" but NEVER puts them both together at once.. know what I mean?

and saying the names of the shows.. I really dont count as a two word sentence...

when did this happen.. is he late? not sure

Luce is in the same boat as John.

he says certain phrases but I don't really he thinks he KNOWS it's more than one word, kwim???

like, he says "po pa bor" por favor or "ah yo yu" I love you.

I am trying to get him to say "mas por favor" but it's not sticking yet.

I am not really concerned though. he is getting more words every day and his recognition seems great to me. perhaps I am biased though.

ETA: he also says "no mas" and "nite nite"

Um, I really wish I could remember when Luca started with two word sentences I really think it was closer to age 2.

i think thats about it. his speech was early. i think its because his gross motor skills were delayed.

as long as john understands what you say and can respond...he's doing fine.

Frankie was fully conversational by 18 months. Two word sentences at 12 months/13 months. Not the norm according to the doctor. My one niece had two and three word sentences by 2 years and my other niece who will be 2 next week...is just using single words now. every child is different.

Colin is just doing this now at 20 months (or we're just catching what he's saying).
Example: I took them to the beach the other day and had Colin in the kiddie pool. He climbed out and I said, "where are you going?"
He puts one finger out and says, "be right back" and runs away

So, he's saying stuff like that and stringing a lot more together these days. He has a big vocabulary but I feel like he tends to not use his words as much b/c he's the baby. We're trying to make him ask more. So when he points to the fridge, I'll say, "what does Colin want" - and he'll respond, "more milk", I make him continue, "more milk please"

I won't consider 20 months late. DS said 'I want cookie' at 18 months, but I know of children who don't string two words together consistently until they are past 2.

They develop at different rates, esp. if they are learning more than one language at home.

I'm not sure how many two words DS says. Ped told me not to worry about it since his vocabulary is very good for 18 months. He understands everything in two languages. He still only says one syllable out of a word but everyday he adds another word or two to his vocabulary so I'm not concerned yet.

we try making him say it but hell still only say the last word I've said.

ex: say more please.. he'll just say please.

JJ was just 22 months & within the past 1-2 months he started to put things together but only limited.

He will say
have you seen ball
have you seen da (dad)
have you seen strike (he bowls)
hi da

otherwise he will give me a 1 word answer & then babbles.

They started a little before two, but after they turned two was when their language really exploded.

DD talks a lot....i feel like i can almost have a conversation with her.

DS is just starting to put together 2 word phrases.

DD had two word sentences by 18 months and now at 24 months can have full blown conversations. Every child is different though. I would not be worried at this point.

DS had a lot of words at that age, but I don't think he really started combining 2-3 words until around 22 months. His language really started to explode around 2.

All kids are different...

My twins were speaking in full sentences by 18 months. They were ridiculously early talkers. Their language skills were always very advanced for their age. Even to this day...they are 12 now..

I'll admit that I was concerned with my son's speech. Having had such early talkers with twins and a developmentally disabled child (My eldest daughter) I didnt really know what "normal" was...

I distinctly remember what DS's first sentence was. He was just about 2...perhaps a month or so on either side...He had gone into the bathroom with his father to watch daddy use the toilet. When DH was done DS looked into the toilet and said..."bubbles in there". We knew he could say "in there" and "bubbles" but it was the first time he took the phrase "in there" and combined it with the noun "bubbles"...

Once he started that was it...

My daughter's language seems very advanced but I don't have much to compare it to. She has been saying 2 word sentences since 11-12 months. She would say, "Hi dad, Hey dog, Dad Baba, etc." At 14 months, she started saying "Tank You" when you had her things. It was surprising because I never taught her to say it. She just picked it up. On her 15th month birthday, I was walking out of the store and a lady held the door for you. She then said, "Tank You" to her. I have been reading constantly to my daughter since she was just a few weeks old. I also am a big talker and big phone user, so I think that has helped. I also had a no tv policy until recently when I allowed her to watch Sesame Street.

I will say that motor development is probably just average. She took steps at 12 months but really didn't fully commit to walking until 14 months.

Every child is very different. There is a huge range at this age b/w what is advanced,normal and behind. I would ask the ped rather than comparing to others that may be ahead or behind.

To answer the q's -

My DD (2nd) started using a few 2 word together phrases at 11-12 mos. (thank you, hi X, bye X) By 14 mos she was constantly combining 2 words. Now, at 17 mos she puts 4 words together.

My DS started at 16 mos. By 18 mos he was putting 3-4 words together.

Just about 2 weeks ago - he'll be 2 on Wednesday. I was talking to MIL about it a month or so ago and she said it just happens out of nowhere and that's exactly what he did. One day he was speaking in single syllables, the next day he was enunciating every word and a few days later we started getting sentences...yesterday he told the knock knock joke from YGG...literally in a matter of 2 weeks.
