Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

DH and I went to Ethan Allan to look at some new bedroom sets. The designer there tried to sell us on two different nightstands...he basically said people who have matching nightstands do so b/c they don't know what else to do....

I have never seen or heard of this before. Does anyone have different nightstands, and do you have pics?

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

I have seen this trend with a lot of high end furniture companies and I happen to love it. In particular I know Stanley does this. They offer multiple types of nightstands that all go with a particular set. Here are pics of the Lincoln Park set as one example. They show a steptable on one side and the matching nightstand on the other. Personally I love the way it looks! But I have never been big on matching things.

I want to see if I can also find you a pic of a set with two different night stands together.

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

I used to work at Ethan Allen (not as a designer) and they were very big on the idea that you don't have to get "matching" furniture and that you could mix and match pieces from different collections. Some of the designers really didn't like furniture that was too "matching" - whatever that means!!!

I totally understand that it could look very nice to have a bed from one collection and a dresser from a different collection, but I am not sure how I feel about non-matching nightstands.

I agree with this. I don't like anything that is too matchy either. I have one piece in my master bedroom that is an "accent piece". It is a 3 drawer chest and it has different knobs and legs from the rest of my set. I love it, and it is the main reason I purchased the set!

I don't know if I would go for different nightstands though. I feel like it might look unbalanced.

ETA - this is sort of what my accent piece looks like, but without mirror...

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

I thought about that as we have more room on my side of the bed and don't have enough room on DH's side of the bed for one of the oversized nightstands (there is a closet door that swings open).

I just knew the lack of symmetry (his being much thinner than my other option) would drive me nutsChat Icon Call me "out of style" but I knew I wouldn't like it

This is not a new trend. The "trend" came a few years ago.

I am not a fan of it. I prefer matching.

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

I like the look of mismatched. But I don't know how I'd feel with it in my home. I like the matching bed side tables for the symmetry but if you can can mismatched nightstands that still go together I think that can be a good look too.

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

its been around awhile and is great if you like an eclectic look, and if it is done right it looks great. And if they are the same width and height it wont look off balanced.

I have never done a bedroom with a matching set. Sometimes it takes a bit to find 2 a coplue actually like, but unless a client requests it, I've always used non matching. The same goes for end tables in a living room to.

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

how funny....DH came home with this tree trunk looking thing that he wants to use as a nightstand(we did not get the ones with the set, too matchy matchy for me)...

but I had a problem that he only bought one...but he said that was all they had.

I love symmetry...so this is going to be hard for me.

I don't like "bedroom sets" per se because I do not like things to be too matchy. I like the idea of mismatched nightstands - I think it looks much more "high end".

I can definitely see myself liking HiFi55 (Dianne's) set. As long as they are similar like that and hve the same legs. Beautiful!

Re: Trend? Mismatched nightstands....

we have different nightstands because our furniture was my grandparent's befroom set & their bedroom wasn't large enough for two. So DH uses the one that belongs to the set & I have a decorator table on my side.
We plan to buy new furniture and put this set in our guest room at some point. I like the look of different pieces but accioring to Feng Shui master bedrooms should have matching nightstands, for that reason I will pick a pair that match. Our master bedroom has some artichetural features that would be hard to change that are less than ideal for Feng Shui, so I'm trying to do as many other things as I can to balance it.

I thought the opposite of HGTV. I remember the show sensible chic redid designer rooms and never had matching nightstands - candice olsen as well.

That's funny.... I always think of non-matching nightstands as lower-end.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We have non-matching, but that's because when we set up our bedroom, we couldn't afford a set, so we used whatever we could find..... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not a set person, I don't like matchy-matchy. I love the look of 2 different nightstands - they should be the same color and height...
