Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster *Updated to clarify*
Anyone need a 5:30 wake up call each morning? I can do it since I'm up
We took DD's pacifier away on Friday night. She's falling asleep just fine. The problem is that she now wakes up at the crack of dawn. She used to get up at around 8am, but she would stir earlier. When she stirred, we'd pop the pacifier in and off to sleep she went. Without the pacifier, she's wide awake and ready to start the day.
We feel so selfish, but we're tempted to give it to her in the morning so that we can sleep a little more (plus this is killing my morning routine before work). I guess I just need some time to adjust. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Baby rooster's mom
** To clarify because there seems to be some confusion: DD is doing just fine without the pacifier. The only issue is that she now wakes up for her first bottle at 5:30. My question was about considering giving her the pacifier at 5:30 solely so that DH and I can sleep a little longer.

Um I would give it back also. Dd did not sleep thru the night until 9 mo and she is a 5:30 to 6:15 riser never any later. If that would work for me now I would do it. I miss my sleep. At 4 months I was up every two hrs with her. Your lucky

Re: Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
I would defintetly give it back too but you can limit it if you want. I can't remember exactly when I started but DD was only allowed to have it at nap time and bed time. She just finally stop using it all together at around 26/27 months and for that to happen I just cut off the pacifier and let her keep the doll ( she uses a wubba nub one) she still carries it around and calls It her binky even though there is no pacifier at the end

Agreed! My DD is 12 months old, and I dread the day that I have to start weaning her from it...planning on about 18 months.

yes! I'd give it back b/c she's is still so young.
I plan on taking my ds' paci away around 18-20 months. I am scared because I know it's going to be pure hell for me.

Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
i might be in the minority (partially because my kiddos just kinda stopped loving their pacifiers, or they didn't, you know, pacify them anymore), but I'd give it a few more days and see if she will regulate on your own. It seems like an arduous task to break the pacifier habit later on when they've had it for a year or two, than to do it now... then again, another few weeks to get you through the summer might be a good go-between.
Is there any other soothing device you can try out? white noise? lovey/doll?

ugggh this is tough. my feeling is if she is doing OK without it, ditch it!
This coming from the mama of a 3 year old who STILL uses his to sleep
can you introduce a lovey? something else to comfort and soothe?
my DD is 5 months and I plan to take the paci well before 1 year.

I would try this first, it's a bitchh to break the paci habit.
We use the angel dear blanket. I slept with it a few nights before I gave it to my DD.

Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
The thing is, I think there could still be a NEED for the pacifier at 4 1/2 months. It's not necessarily just a habit.

That is too young to take it away... Why give it to her in the first place? There is no need to take it away before 18 months IMO..

I wouldn't take it away this early - although it's hard to break them of it later on, something else may just take its place (my boys dropped them at 4 mos on their own for differing reasons and it made it that much more difficult to wean them from bottles).

Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
Easy for me to say bc my DD never liked a pacifier, but if she is falling asleep and staying asleep but just waking up early, I would try to tough it out without the pacifier instead of having to deal with it later when they are more stubborn

Re: Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
try a lovee/blankie dd is the same age and was waking at 3am for her paci...it was exhausting! she seems to get herself back to sleep now by grabbing her blankie...at least at 3am she does. she also wakes at 5am though for what seems like the day. she wasnt even settlng down when we gave her the paci so now we have a 5am breakfast and she goes back to bed til 8

Re: Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
I would let her have it. You could wean her off of it during the day and only give it to her for naps and bedtime. But I would not take it away completely at this point. She is still so little.

What would she NEED it for? I don't understand.
Maybe try putting her down a little later and see if she sleeps later?
Neither of my kids ever really cared about the pacifier past 2-3 months, so I could be way off base, but I don't think there are any risks to taking it away (besides a cranky mommy )

The need to suck, which is why pacifiers exist in the first place (one of the 5 S's). While I never said there was a risk involved, it IS recommended to use a pacifier to reduce SIDS risk.

No need to be defensive- I was honestly asking.
Thank you for explaining.
ETA: To OP- I still don't think you HAVE to give it back unless you really want to.

Re: Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
Idk I took dd's pacifier away early (6months) and she started sucking her thumb. At 2.5 she still does and I can't take it away like a paci. So for me I would give it back.

Re: Took away DD's pacifier and now she's a rooster
I would give it back to her. We took DD's away at night when she was about 9 months and was well into her sleep routine, she did just fine with it at that point. Then around 10 months we slowly stopped giving it for naps. That was an adjustment but she eventually did just fine. She is now 13 months and only gets it in the car or if she is being fussy while we are out. I don't even keep on in the house anymore, just in the car and diaper bag. I would say give it back to her and let her get a little more into a sleep routine then try again in a few months.
