Re: To pierce or not to pierce
I will wait. I remember when i decided i wanted my own ears pierced around 10 or 11. At that point i did not care about the pain and was responsible enough to take care of my ears on my own. I remember feeling so proud to have it done. It was really a coming of age thing for me. It was like a celebration, we went out to eat afterwards. I hope my dd can have a similar experience.

To pierce or not to pierce
I am waiting until my DD is around 4. I honestly do not want to deal with the up keep. I think it looks cute on some girls, but not all, depends on the baby.

To pierce or not to pierce
I had DD's ears done at 3 1/2 months at Claire's, and I'm glad that I did. Having my own ears pierced when I was 4 years old was really traumatizing. I remember shoving the lady in the face when she was doing my ears because it hurt so much. DD cried less than a minute and was back to her happy self. She doesn't remember a thing. Ironically, DS cried more because he was afraid for DD.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Totally not making fun of anyone but I laugh when I read that some of you are waiting until they are 3-8ish to make their own decisions about putting holes in their body because at 19 I made the decision to put a hole in my belly button and it was the WORST decision of my life lol. After two babies, the area with the hole and between the hole and belly button is SO NASTY that I really regret getting it done. So, I think even at 19 a person can't really understand the decisions they are making regarding putting holes in their body let alone 3yrs old lol.
I have boys so I never really thought about whether or not I would get it done. My niece got it done at 4 months and we all went to the zoo and some older lady made a comment really loud to her friend about how horrible it was to pierce a baby. My sister obviously heard and was upset. Whether or not you agree, I thought that was uncalled for.

I think the two piercings are different so you can't really compare. The belly button ring can get stretched out and gross like you mentioned. An earring hole just closes. I don't think anyone is really suggesting that a 4 year old can make a well thought out decision about body art- but earrings are so benign it doesn't really matter.

To pierce or not to pierce
I rather the child ask for it and have something to look forward too, I guess.
I remember clearly the day I was 8 and got my ears pierced.
I do find it unncessary to do to a baby, but who am I to judge. I would just worry about their skin growth around the piercing, them pulling on it, etc

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Im not a fan of the look. I also want DD to be able to take care of them herself. I had mine done at 12, right before my bat mitzvah so it was a whole coming of age/turning into a teenager experience.

Piercing ears can be cultural and religious so some of these comments can be very insulting. It's not only an aesthetic practice. I personally think babies with earrings look adorable

What cultures and religions have parents pierce a baby's ears? I never knew this - i'm curious.

Sorry to crash but to answer your question in a lot of latino countries they actually pierce the babies ears before living the hospital and is consider weird finding a little girl without their ears pierce. Actually for me is surprising to read all these of people that they had to ask to get their ears for pierce, for me is like a giving.

I think babies with earrings look adorable, but we will be waiting to pierce DD's ears until she wants it. I had mine done at age 8, and felt like such a big girl.

To pierce or not to pierce
I was around 5 when my parents bribed me to get them pierced. It was at Tricounty, and it REALLY hurt... We are going to use our pediatrician when dd is a baby...
They make childrens screw back earrings, where they screw on, and lever back earrings which are also great for staying on....... I myself tend to lose all non lever back earrings as an adult.

i sort of agree with this. IMO (and only MO so not trying to start anything at all) a 3-8 year old wanting their ears pierced is just the same as them wanting a toy. they dont realllllly grasp the difference they just like how it looks and want what other kids have. furthermore, maybe its just my family and friends, but i cant think of any grown women i know that don't have their ears pierced. not one. so IMO whether i choose to pierce her ears at 7m or whether she "decides" at 4 years old - chances are quite good that in our society she will end up with pierced ears. ive never heard of a person that was mad at his/her parents for piercing their ears before they were able to give consent. IMO its easier for the child to do it before they remember it and before they can pull it out prior to it healing. in addition to my earlier reply all of those are reasons that I chose to pierce at 7m instead of waiting for her to ask.

And there are cultures that DON'T pierce a baby's ears (or anything else) b/c it's considered mutilation, which is prohibited. All the posts that consider people to be silly for not piercing can be insulting too.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
I just had my DD's ears pierced (she's 6 months old) by my pediatrician. I chose to do it so young because I didn't want her to have a similar experience as me--I was 9 years old and all I remember was being terrified and totally traumatized by the whole thing. Even though I had wanted them and it was my decision, I cried the whole way to the jeweler and the whole way home.

We are waiting until DD is older and wants them. Neither one of us want to put her through pain unnecessarily. We barely needed to discuss it because we are on the same page.
My inlaws on the other hand keep making annoying comments about it making it sound like it's all my decision and I'm doing something wrong.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
I pierced my DD at 6 months. I had a lot of people give me BS about it.
They say "it takes away from her being a little girl". I think it is a personal preference.
I will say I am glad I did it then. Many of my students who are 5 go to get them done and describe how bad it is. Some don't even do the other ear.
I went to a ped that numbed my DD's ears with cream and she didn't even cry!
I think they look great!
Good Luck!

Very observant Jews and Muslims avoid piercings. Both religions state that our bodies belong to G-d, and we're not supposed to mess with His creation.
That said, secular Jews and Muslims will be ok with piercing a girl/woman's ears. I've rarely seen it on a baby though.

Crashing too...Italians do this also, it's very strange to have an Italian baby girl without pierced ears, that's the case in my family and neighborhood I grew up in an actually most of the italians I know in my 33 years! I myself was a baby when my ped pierced my ears.
