I am in the no camp. just another thing to clean and worry about. When she can deal w/ it herself, she can have them.

Piercing ears can be cultural and religious so some of these comments can be very insulting. It's not only an aesthetic practice. I personally think babies with earrings look adorable
What cultures and religions have parents pierce a baby's ears? I never knew this - i'm curious.
Crashing too...Italians do this also, it's very strange to have an Italian baby girl without pierced ears, that's the case in my family and neighborhood I grew up in an actually most of the italians I know in my 33 years! I myself was a baby when my ped pierced my ears.
i'm 100% italian and had NO idea about this!

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Too each his own.
I had my DD's ears pierced at 7 months. WOuld have done it sooner, but I was too scared. I'm glad I did it. I think babies look adorable with pierced ears. People always comment on how cute they look on my DD.
I also had no issues at all with them. I cleaned them for the first couple of weeks with the cleaner they gave me and that was it. I turn them every time I give her a bath so they are clean. Very simple.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Posted by FlowerWife maybe its just my family and friends, but i cant think of any grown women i know that don't have their ears pierced. not one. so IMO whether i choose to pierce her ears at 7m or whether she "decides" at 4 years old - chances are quite good that in our society she will end up with pierced ears.
I know you don't "know"me but I am a grown woman who never had her ears piereced. I just never wanted it. And to this day, I have absolutely no desire for earings. Never once have I wanted them. I am not a jewlery person at all, so maybe that is it, plus I usually wear my hair down and long so my ears are covered anyway. But having said that, if my parents had pierced my ears as a baby I wouldn't have been upset over it, I just would have taken them out and let them close up when I decided I didn't like earrings. It's not like a tattoo or something permanent... so to me, it wouldn't have been a big deal either way, kwim?

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
My DD (2.5) has been asking for earrings since she turned 2. She askes ALL.THE.TIME! The exact reasons I've been afraid to pierce them have been posted on this thread so it is interesting to read...I've heard of infections, losing earrings (possibly swallowed) and ripping out...For now, I'm waiting . I tell DD when she is a big girl mommy will take her to get earrings and her nails done. She says - oh, ok, when I am 3

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Fwiw, my mom didn't pierce her own ears until, she was in her 40's.
My girls do not have their ears pierced. I don't plan on letting them do it until, they are older.

Piercing ears can be cultural and religious so some of these comments can be very insulting. It's not only an aesthetic practice.
And there are cultures that DON'T pierce a baby's ears (or anything else) b/c it's considered mutilation, which is prohibited. All the posts that consider people to be silly for not piercing can be insulting too.
Very observant Jews and Muslims avoid piercings. Both religions state that our bodies belong to G-d, and we're not supposed to mess with His creation.
That said, secular Jews and Muslims will be ok with piercing a girl/woman's ears. I've rarely seen it on a baby though.
The majority of my family are Chassidc Orthodox Jews, and every single one of them have pierced ears. I also grew up in a Lubavitich community and same thing.
To answer the OPs question, I did not pierce my DDs ears, for me it's her body and I'm not going to make that decision for her. I will let her decide whether or not to pierce her ears.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
I had my ears pierced at 13. It hurt.... A LOT! The maintenance was hard too... The rotation and placing alcohol burned. The pain prevented me from doing any other piercings when many of my friends were piercing belly buttons and the top of the earlobe. With dd, we will wait until she is much older. 12 or 13 is good. I like the coming of age idea.

Totally not making fun of anyone but I laugh when I read that some of you are waiting until they are 3-8ish to make their own decisions about putting holes in their body because at 19 I made the decision to put a hole in my belly button and it was the WORST decision of my life lol. After two babies, the area with the hole and between the hole and belly button is SO NASTY that I really regret getting it done. So, I think even at 19 a person can't really understand the decisions they are making regarding putting holes in their body let alone 3yrs old lol.
I have boys so I never really thought about whether or not I would get it done. My niece got it done at 4 months and we all went to the zoo and some older lady made a comment really loud to her friend about how horrible it was to pierce a baby. My sister obviously heard and was upset. Whether or not you agree, I thought that was uncalled for.
I think the two piercings are different so you can't really compare. The belly button ring can get stretched out and gross like you mentioned. An earring hole just closes. I don't think anyone is really suggesting that a 4 year old can make a well thought out decision about body art- but earrings are so benign it doesn't really matter.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
The point of that wasn't to compare the two piercings, obviously the belly and ear are different piercings. My point was that even 19 year olds have a hard time making decisions on their own how can someone expect a 3 year old to make such a large decision regarding putting holes in their body?

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
Well I'm not crazy about the look of earrings on a baby - but it is not my kid not my problem/business what someone else wants to do. I am waiting for the girls to ask. For someone who posted that they have never heard of someone who didn't want them. Actually I have had 2 friends over the years that decided that they didn't want them - but were given them as babies (cultural - one was from peru and one from argentina). I also knew 2 little girls when I was in elementary school who had their earrings ripped out and ended up needing to have their lobes sewed. I am not in any rush - I DD#1 wants them bust wants to wait until year or 2. Would probably do them in the summer so she wouldn't have to take them out and give them time to heal.
I think a lot of it is what you are used to and grew up with. In my neighborhood almost none of the little girls have their ears pierced. I would say 80% don't. But it seems I see more girls 6+ who are getting them.

Re: To pierce or not to pierce
I am going to say no... speaking from personal experience here from a mom that DID pierce her babys ears. Got DD's ear pierced at 6 months old. Everything was fine, I loved them, she looked pretty. It wasn't until she turned 18 months that they became a problem. She would pick and pull so much that she almost tore her ear in half. I found her in her crib one morning with blood everywhere. Her ear was mutilated. Earrings came out that day and she wont be getting them back in /repierced until she is much older.

The only thing is that earlobe piercings rarely close up once they have been there that long. I got line pierced when I was 7. I wear earrings maybe once every 3 years or so. I can still get them in just as easily every time. Once they are in for that long, new skin forms and the old skin around the hole can not fuse back together. That's the main reason I have such an issue with it- it really IS permanent in most cases.
