Buy a Kohls gift card for $1 and also get a ball pit....cut off the UPC so they can't return it.

I think that is so rude! No wonder our kids feel so entitled nowadays.

If it was a close friend or family member, I would tell them they were rude, probably in the form of a joke, or i'd buy them toys on purpose. Because I think one good turn deserves another.

If it is an acquaintance or not such a close friend, I would just decline the invitation.

I would have been more impressed if they ended it with "....so bring a toy we can donate to a needy child".

to me, this is inappropriate..people have asked what to get DD and I give them a list of interests or a specific thing (ie. puzzles or the name of a game she's played) but if someone doesn't ask, it's their choice or they could come with nothing...that's not what the day is about...sheesh!

No one here mentioned (which is a favorite childhood memory of mine) the fact that the attendee might, just might get excited about getting to go to the you store and pick out a gift for the birthday child. I freaking loved going to toys r us and picking something out. And it was known it was for my friend only but still getting to dream about what I wanted for my bday or Christmas was magical.

And also the whole point of a gift is that is is a GIFT not a given. My family members love to pick out DDs gifts. I would never ever tell them what to buy, if someone asks obviously that's different.

Finally maybe all the "santas" shouldn't spoil their children SO much that it makes bdays an issue. This is partly what's wrong with our country/youth today. Makes me sad.

I think when it's time to throw my son birthday parties I'm going to send invites that say things like

"We really don't love our son at all and never buy him things, so please go hog wild and don't forget gift receipts."

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Of course it is rude!

I know registries make sense for Christmas and birthdays but personally I don't do them bc I find it rude to be telling people what to get! If someone specifically asks me I will say "oh he could use clothes" but to request KOHLS GC'S SPECIFICALLY?!?!?!? Beyond tacky. I would not be as offended if it just said no toys, I get that but let me pick an outfit or a book don't tell me to get a Kohls GC (and I often gift GC's anyway lol its just the point of being told that irks me)

"Santa spoiled the girls so much this year that we would appreciate not receiving any toys, however, we are excited to let them pick out a new spring wardrobe, so please make your gift a Kohls giftcard. Thank you!!".

Thoughts?

If they're so excited to let the girls pick a new spring wardrobe, perhaps they should pay for it themselves

...and let Santa know that he should leave gift cards instead of gifts next year.

Do you think it's rude to have a gift registry? I mean, sure the note is tacky, but isn't a gift registry specifying what the kid wants the same? Doesn't mean you have to give a gift card.

I've made gift registries for bdays and Christmas, but have only told people that the lists were there if they specifically asked. If they didn't ask, I didn't offer the info.

I think it is extremely rude to ask specifically for Kohl's gift cards if nobody asked what to get. I agree with PP that it is fun for the kids to go choose a gift for their friends. I know my DD loves to do that, and is very excited bringing the wrapped gift that they chose for their friend to open.

Tonight, I had a discussion with a co-worker who got an invitation like this for a bridal shower! It's obnoxious.
The most refreshing invite I ever got said "the bride will enjoy whatever you choose, so please purchase whatever you think she would like or need! No registry". I actually got her a better and more thoughtful gift than if she had registered.

I agree w/you leb. Seeing how much my friend loved the gift I chose (and later asking me over to play with it) was amazing!

I agree!!
My kids have a ton of toys. Way too many and I just had birthday parties for both of them. I made no wish lists and only told people ideas if they asked. I usually tell people get whatever. I thought it was fun opening my DS gifts and seeing what others picked out. I got a few GC as well which was nice. Man what kid is going to be happy opening kohl gift cards. You only get so many years of your kids being excited about birthdays when there young. I have boys but they sure as heck don't want to go pick out clothes.

Re: This was written on bday invite my son received..

Its rude, YES. I think it would be a bit LESS rude if it didn't specifically say Kohls giftcard.

I can understand the kid having too many toys from Christmas. I get it. Mine doesn't even play with anything from Christmas anymore. But to be specific with the giftcard? Thats just ballsy. When I send out invites to bday parties, the moms usually ask me what gift they should purchase. I always say that he appreciates anything, however, dont go crazy - giftcards are fine and he can spend it on what he wants when he decides.

i think it's rude, whether it be a bday, shower etc to dictate what gift you want to receive on the invite (not a shower registry, stating they want cash or gift cards). I do end up giving a check or gift card more often than not because I know usually parents don't want toys. Just be happy people will come to your party and want to celebrate with you. If they don't need anything then donate it!

I don't mind it...makes my life soo much easier when I go buy the kid a gift LOL no searching toys r us or target aisles for the perfect gift..Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wish all the invites had it so I don't have to think of what to buy!!!

On that note, I wouldn't put it on my kids' invites because I would be scared of what people would think...but again I don't mind it if others do it.

My friend was invited to a shower and in the card was the gift tag already written out with the item she was supposed to buy. I think it was a $100 blender. Now that's rude.
