This has been a really hard week
I haven't posted on here because it has been so busy and crazy, and I haven't had the emotional energy to come here and type everything all out.
My Dad has been fighting cancer for 3 years and on Monday we lost him.
It has been a really long 3 year battle. Extensive surgeries, radiation, and chemo therapy...he worked the entire time, driving from Riverhead to Southampton and getting there by 6am, working full time, up until 2 weeks ago when we got the news that the cancer had spread to both sides of his lungs, his collar bone, and his liver. At that point he finally agreed to retire. He had been waiting until Dec to retire so that he would be able to collect pension since he wasn't yet 66, but he finally agreed to retire 2 weeks ago. After he retired it was a RAPID decline, and on Sunday he ended up in the hospital with chest pains, shortness of breath, and he passed away on Monday after all of my siblings (I am one of 5) and my mother were finally able to make it up to the hospital to see him. It was like he was waiting to see all of us and we all were able to express our feelings to him, before he died.
I have been a wreck. I have been trying to focus on my dad's life, and to pay tribute and honor to him. Thursday, the day of the wake, was very much a celebration of my Dad's life. We got together hundreds of pictures to display of him at the funeral home. My husband helped me take some video clips of my dad dancing from past weddings (He was an amazing dancer) and a speech that my dad made at my sister's wedding and play it at the wake. I made a speech introducing the video to everyone on Thursday night at the wake. Several hundred people showed up to celebrate my father's life, and although it felt GOOD to know how my father was loved by so many, it was also so emotional and so difficult. My stomach was in knots the whole night because of that speech but I couldn't have let it go without doing it. Someone needed to speak up about the kind of person my Dad was.
Now I am just wiped out and exhausted. I am 17 weeks pregnant. Poeple keep telling me to take care of myself and I don't even know what to do. I am overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done today. I've basically been gone from my house for a week. I have a 6 year old here to take care of. My DH is wonderful and is playing with her and keeping her occupied, but I still have to clean, run the errands, go grocery shopping today and right now I just have no desire to even get dressed and leave the house!
I had to reschedule an appt to see the OBGYN on Thursday, til Monday, because of the Wake, and right now I just can't wait to go to the appt on Monday to make sure all is well with the baby.
The one really comforting thing that someone said to me is that even though my Dad won't be around to watch this baby being born and grow up, he has already met the baby. He knows if it will be a boy or a girl. He knows what the baby looks like and what we will name him or her. So that is a comfort to me, because it was making me so sad that this baby wouldn't get to meet my Mom.
We do have so many amazing memories over the past few years with my Dad. He made it a point to live his life fully and spend as much quality time with us and his 3 grandaughters as possible over the last few years, and we will always treasure the memories.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know what has been going on.

that does seem like a huge emotional roller coaster to go through right now. I definitely agree with the thought of your Dad already knowing everything about your baby.

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss.
What you and your family did at the wake was a great way to honor him. It sounds like he was a great man, loved by many.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is the worst, especially during this time in your life. I was 2 months pp and my sister was 7 months pregnant when our dad died last October. If you ever need anything or just need to vent and talk please feel free to FM at any time day or night. And please take care of yourself, if not for you, for your little one. I'll be praying for your family.
