More importantly, I want to know where the HECK you ordered a $4 lunch from??? Chat Icon

We just ordered Thai today and it cost me $14 and we're NOT in the city.

If I could find a place that I could get a $4 lunch from (no less a $2 lunch) I'd order out everyday!!!

Re: The nerve

i think the idea here is ever time you order lunch i'm sure it's a different price each time....$2.00, $5.00, $10.00 whatever. i think some people forget to factor in tax and tip as well...of course there are times i know i've let a $1.00 here or there slide, but if someone is making a habit of just giving the exact amount or just adding something like $.35 that could be annoying and why should the person who is ordering get stuck paying extra....and in other instances i have people who have ordered for the office and they wind up making a profit!! i think the solution here everyone is to brown bag it LOL

Honestly I wouldn't expect somebody to give a $1 tip for a $2 soup. Especially if the order was large enough where there were three other people ordering as well.

If eight people ordered $2 soups and the total came to $16 I would probably give a $2 tip (25cents each). Maybe I am cheap but I don't feel a need to tip these guys more than $3-4 dollars.

Tipping is out of control.

Seriously...come on now! Then dont order. 35 cents is not appropriate for the man to even drive here. She should absolutely get her own sh#t the next time. Me and the other co-worker already made up our mind about that. I think you should give 1.00 out of common courtesy. The man did drive here...

I'm sorry but this is incredibly tacky to ask somebody for a $1 tip on a $2 soup. I'll give you an example as to why.

Lets say three people order a $9 lunch each. That's a $30 lunch after tax. If those three people give a $1 tip each, that's a $3 tip for this guy. I think that's plenty.

If somebody I work with just wants something small (like a $2 soup), I am not going to ask that person to give a 50% tip. Sorry but I am not not like that.

The total in that case would be about $32. So you are saying a $30 meal warrants a $3 tip but a $32 meal warrants a $4 tip?

$3 tip is plenty and in this case I would probably be nice enough to just let that person give the two dollars.

I am not the "nickel and dime person" and it sounds like you are more ****** off over the fact that this person is getting what you would call "free delivery" on their $2 order.

You said the person drives, I was thinking more foot delivery as I am in Manhattan. But I guess we will agree to disagree on this one.

You math is bad, if you tipped the standard 15% on a $32.00 bill it would require a $5.10 tip so $4.00 is still cheap

Rule of thumb where I work is a $1 each.

That's typically the rule we have as well.... to a point.

But if 10 people order a $4 soup, are we tipping the delivery guy $10 bucks? Of course not. There has to be limits.

If this person is a chronic cheapskate, then I would just cut them out and be honest. Tell her either give a dollar or get it on her own.

What's wrong with tipping a guy $10 measly buck for delivering TEN lunches?? That's an extra DOLLAR a piece!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think if you don't want to tip well, you shouldn't order in, I don't think throwing the guy a couple of bucks really cuts it anymore. Their COL is going up just as much as ours! If a dollar is that big of a deal, you should bring lunch, or go out for a slice of pizza (which, with a soda, will probably cost you around 4 bucks anyway!)

The more I think about it...the more you are right! That is what is pissing me off is that I seriously got .35 cents. To me ita kick in the face. Nothing would have been better then calculating it to the last penny.

I agree. 1 dollar a piece buys the guy some gas in his car. Everyone else can complain about the cost of gas except the delivery guy. No....he deserves .35 cents.

I don't tip 15% of delivery unless the guy has to drive to get to me.

I have no problem tipping 20% for good sit down service and I am a very good tipper overall and used to work in the service indistry so I have experience with this first-hand.

I'll tip more if somebody has to drive the food to me (because gas costs $$$$).

But I am not tipping 15% to have a food runner walk literally two blocks to get to my office. 10% is sufficient.

I dont have experience with foot delivery service. However, in all honesty...I'd probably pay that person even more. OMG...to think someone is out in the baking sun or the freezing cold delivering to me bc I dont want to leave my cozy warm office. I think they deserve alot more then 10%.

-just making sure....you would give 2 dollars to the delivery guy who drops off 20.00 worth of food in a snow storm?

If it were a "snow storm" I would give more. Typically on a normal day $20 order i'd give 2-3 dollars depending on the distance.

Since we normally get $10 lunches, it's usually a dollar per person. And again this is for delivery from a place a block or two away in Manhattan.

Wow, that's a great price!!! I swear I think the least I've spent for a chinese food lunch is like $7.00!!

Ive given 2-3 dollars to dominos pizza. There is no way i could eat a 10 dollar lunch times (lets say 4 workers) equalling 40 bucks and give 2-3 bucks.

Like I said if the person was driving to get to me, i'd tip more. I definitely don't envy the guy that has to supply his own car and gas to make a living.

But for the guy walking across the street to deliver food, that's a different story.

I'm pretty sure I'd tip the delivery guy who walks the same way, but that's just me.

You don't, that's fine to.

I think to some extent tipping is really subjective.

I dont have the exact #s for ya since my co-worker went home. We each put in "almost" 3 dollars each and the bill was around 15. We put in the 3 each without thinking about the .35.

Re: The nerve

I'm going to guess that the OPs annoyance stems from more than one instance of this happening... I'd be annoyed too.

As for tipping the delivery person... I'm in the city too, midtown, and I think it's a little ridiculous to tip someone who had to walk 2 blocks just 2 dollars (or 10% which was stated above). These guys have to go out in the pouring rain, freezing cold, heat and humidity carrying 4 or more meals bobbing and weaving every Tom D!ck and Harry who's just flown in from Arkansas... just for a measly 2 buck tip... that's an inapporopraite amount IMO.

Wow. You must get your food quick. Chat Icon

If I am going to tip $4-5 for delivery on a $20 meal... i'd rather walk across the street... sit down and have a nice prepared meal and give the waitress the 20-25% tip.

That waitress is working a hell of a lot more for that 20% than a guy that has to take 5 minutes to walk across the street. That's just my opinion.
