The nerve
We order lunch at work every Fri and we have one woman who is CHEAP!!! Last time we ordered I asked for 1.00 from everyone for a tip...I figured that was fair. This woman stated "I am not giving 1.00 they deserve more. I am not stiffing them, they wont come back. Ok, well I am the last person to EVER stiff anyone so I threw in 2.00 on my 5.00 lunch. Today this cheap skate once AGAIn threw in .35 cents for her 2.00 soup. Is she for real? SO if we all got soup we would give the guy 1.00 tip.

I hate ordering at work with others, i always end paying almost double for my lunch. And others walk away with double the food and pay half the price.

Re: The nerve
Honestly I wouldn't expect somebody to give a $1 tip for a $2 soup. Especially if the order was large enough where there were three other people ordering as well.
If eight people ordered $2 soups and the total came to $16 I would probably give a $2 tip (25cents each). Maybe I am cheap but I don't feel a need to tip these guys more than $3-4 dollars.
Tipping is out of control.

Either way they have to bring the lunch over. If I were getting a $2 soup I would tip $1..I couldn't give less..I would never give change to someone who delivered to me.

Seriously...come on now! Then dont order. 35 cents is not appropriate for the man to even drive here. She should absolutely get her own sh#t the next time. Me and the other co-worker already made up our mind about that. I think you should give 1.00 out of common courtesy. The man did drive here...

Shes older. We are in our 30's she is in her late 50's. I feel bad being nasty to her. I actually dont love the idea of keeping her out of this from now on but our other co-worked says ...no more.

I'm sorry but this is incredibly tacky to ask somebody for a $1 tip on a $2 soup. I'll give you an example as to why.
Lets say three people order a $9 lunch each. That's a $30 lunch after tax. If those three people give a $1 tip each, that's a $3 tip for this guy. I think that's plenty.
If somebody I work with just wants something small (like a $2 soup), I am not going to ask that person to give a 50% tip. Sorry but I am not not like that.
The total in that case would be about $32. So you are saying a $30 meal warrants a $3 tip but a $32 meal warrants a $4 tip?
$3 tip is plenty and in this case I would probably be nice enough to just let that person give the two dollars.
I am not the "nickel and dime person" and it sounds like you are more ****** off over the fact that this person is getting what you would call "free delivery" on their $2 order.
You said the person drives, I was thinking more foot delivery as I am in Manhattan. But I guess we will agree to disagree on this one.

in a case like this i think it's less about how much the delivery person is getting and more about common sense - did this lady actually hand you 2.35?? how did she figure that out?
so she got a $2 soup - big deal. next time she'll get a $6 salad. is she going to put in $2 then?
i think it was ridiculous for her to be so cheap - what is the big deal about throwing in another dollar??

This is why in my old office I would never order lunch with someone or pick something up for someone. It would wind up costing me a few dollars extra. And when I did order, I'd always give more then I had to.

I personally wouldn't be getting $4.00 lunches delivered because it leads to issues like this. I would just go get the food myself if the food was that cheap.
With that said in my example, if I am ordering with a group of people and there is enough tip already for the delivery guy (like three bucks), I am not going to stick my hand out to this co-worker asking for additional money when she is only adding $2 to the order.
I just don't have the time or patience to get flustered over something petty like this. Especially when it may come a time where the situation will be reversed, like if I had a big breakfast, and maybe just want a bagel when my co-workers are ordering lunch entrees.
Are my co-workers going to ask me for a $1 tip for my $1.50 bagel? Nope. But that's just the way the group of people I work with are. We are all professionals and we just look out for each other. We always seem to have plenty of money in the pool after we all give in so it's never an issue. So I have to give an extra dollar today. Big deal. It all works out in the end because somebody will probably give an extra dollar tomorrow.
If this co-worker constantly orders $2 food, then just cut her out or make her give a $1 tip every now and then (I wouldn't ask for a dollar every day though).
In fact perfect example I just now had a $28 lunch delivered today with tip. The lunch was for three people and we all ordered the same exact thing. My two co-workers gave me $9 and I had to pay $10 because I went up and got the food from the lobby. Whoah I had to give an extra dollar. I am not going to let it ruin the rest of my day and I am definitely not going to ask them two for their .33 cent share each.

Are you somehow related to this cheapskate? I mean ya threw in a few digs that you are professionals...so are we. I am in a clinical office with psychologists and social workers and we are pretty professional ourselves. You also stated that you didnt have enough time to worry about adding the money up but yet you have enough time to defend a cheapskate? Bottom line is this, she did the wrong thing and I am venting about it and I already know what we are doing which is leaving her out next time. I have to agree to disagree with you on this one. I hate people who will under tip people who serve them. Its just disgusting!

Re: The nerve
Rule of thumb where I work is a $1 each. Regardless of what you order unless it's something very expensive.
So yes, if I order a $2 soup, I'm still giving a $1 for the tip.
But who knows? Maybe next time, I'll order something that's $10-$12. At that point, I'll still kick in $1 for the tip.
In the end I think it all works out.
I understand the OP's annoyance. It may be petty but nonetheless, it's irriatating.

I never said I defended the cheapskate. I just would have handled it differently. In my example, I would not have asked for a $1 tip for a $2 item. That's just ME. If the person wanted to be generous and just give the $3 on their own, that's great. If they only give $2, I am not going to go crazy over it.
But again, I don't order $4 lunches. Our average lunch is closer to $10-12 because I work in Manhattan.
Every situation is different. If you are ordering $4 lunches, then that does produce a little more difficulty in figuring out a proper tip. And the poster that said to have somebody else try to order it, that's not a bad idea.
If I have four people in my group ordering a $10 lunch each, I wouldn't ask somebody for a $1 tip when ordering a $2 item (especially when there is already $4 tip in the pot). If you want to do that, that's your choice. I personally wouldn't.
I am curious how many people ordered this lunch you got, what the total was, and how much of a tip this guy got.

I'm a tipper, I always tip a buck a drink in a bar, even when I lived in Texas and beers were a buck a bottle, I always tipped a buck a beer.
When we order lunch or go out to lunch a dlooar minimum s standard.
If you only purchased a 2 dollar soup, what is the harm of a dollar, 3 dollars for a soup delivered is a good deal in my eyes.

That's typically the rule we have as well.... to a point.
But if 10 people order a $4 soup, are we tipping the delivery guy $10 bucks? Of course not. There has to be limits.
If this person is a chronic cheapskate, then I would just cut them out and be honest. Tell her either give a dollar or get it on her own.
