sunscreen for 5 month old?

is it an absolute no no?

we're going to Aruba where I know the sun will be very hot and I will obviously do my best to keep him in the shade and covered, but I know he'll be exposed at some point.

Would you use suntan lotion on your 5 month old?

Re: sunscreen for 5 month old?

I would imagine one month wouldn't make a huge difference- they say you can use it at 6 months- and the benefit of having sunscreen on him would outweigh the risk.

I would ask my ped though and make sure I bought a sunscreen that is as chemical free as possible.

Re: sunscreen for 5 month old?

Sunscreen is a must no matter what the age. Especially Aruba where it's very strong. I have always used Coppertone Water babies pure and simple. DS1 always has had sensitive skin and never had an issue. Try some sunblock on her before going to Aruba just to make sure there's no reaction.
My boys wore sunscreen before 6 months. We've been going to Aruba every year too. Hats, good stroller cover, lots of sunscreen and keep applying, stay under the umbrella in the shade and ENJOY!
BTW - we are going to Aruba next week. Can't wait!

This is actually NOT what is recommended. They don't recommend sunscreen use until 6 months of age. Before that they recommend staying out of the sun or using other forms of blocking the sun - stroller covers, hats, etc. 1 month I'm sure is not going to make a difference though.

If you do buy the water babies make sure it is the PURE AND SIMPLE one.
There is another one that has more chemicals and the bottles look pretty much the same.

You're right. An infant shouldn't wear sunscreen. I was thinking 4 - 5 months would be ok to have some on the arms. I remember the Ped saying a little before 6 months is ok, but mainly keep them out of the sun. Better to have some protection then none at all.

I agree for the 4-5 months.. honestly, there are so many more restrictions than when we were kids! I'm certain I had sunscreen on much younger! I turned out just fine... (I guess "just fine" depends on who you talk to, lol).

sunscreen for 5 month old?

I would definitely use sunscreen for a 5 month old in Aruba. I used on my DS last fall at almost 5 months old while on vacation. We use California Baby Super Sensitive Broad Spectrum.

I was under the impression the sunscreen blocks their ability to sweat and they can heat stroke and die. I would keep the baby dressed cool with a sunhat and not have him in the direct sun.

Sunscreen chemicals (they all have them) get absorbed more per body weight in an infant (they have more surface area).

I have my kids in long sleeve swim shirts, hats, and under an umbrella & this is better than any sunscreen.

You can add a little to the areas exposed. Nothing magical happens in a month.

sunscreen for 5 month old?

I asked my ped if it was ok bc we were going to Florida when DD was about 5.5 months and she said it was fine as long as it was one with low chemicals.

Where did you get this info from?

FDA re: sunscreen and infants

Nothing about heat stroke and dying but it says they can overheat and become dehydrated.

Overheating and dehydration in an infant can lead to death, no?

Sure it could. I just meant that it didn't specify that in the link.

Absolutely! Heat stroke is over heating- it is defined by a core body temperature above 105 F and usually occurs along with dehydration.
