I like Finn and Keiran for a boy's name. Our last name is McK, so there will be no doubt he's Irish.
DH is a III and really wants a IV, which I really don't want, but I told him I'd agree to it if we came up with a nickname we both liked (I really don't like DH's middle name). FBIL suggested Finn and we both liked it so if we have a son one day, that's what we'll call him.
OMG....Dh is the III too, and wants our to be the IV. I"m really not keen on it. Dh said if the name is "going to end" it's not going to be with him. He has no problem with a nickname. So our "Francis Joseph" will be called Joey.

How funny. DH's name is Frank and his middle name is a family name. If DH had a normal middle name that we could call a future son, having a IV wouldn't bother me as much. Also, DH and his father have terrible nicknames (Biff and Butch).

All of Dh's family call him Frankie, which is really cute considering he's over 45!

Re: Spinoff to Unusal Names
I LOVE Hunter for a boy. DH likes it; everyone else in my family think's it's ridiculous. I want to name my boy Hunter Jameson and my girl Sophia Ashley.
My Dad is dying for our first son to be named after him, and his name is Carmine. I dunno, I've always hated the name Carmine and it doesn't go with my married name which is the farthest from Italian. But as we get closer to having babies, I grow fonder of the idea. I was thinking of doing Carmine Joseph so we could call him CJ instead of Carmine.

I love the name Charlie for a girl...DH hates it though
He wants to give our children Irish names....I like old fashioned and not so popular- Henry, Oliver, Yvette (after my grandmother) or Evelyn....Avery and Aubrey....
The decision will torture me when the time comes

I've always loved the name Hunter for a boy but it's almost the same as my married name so it would never fly!

I love the name Charlie for a girl...DH hates it though Our child will be called Charlie - whether it is a boy(Charles) or a girl (Charlotte). I love the name.
I really love the name Olive...DH hates it. I also really love Thira for a girl...I don't think it's a name...it's where we honeymooned.

Re: Spinoff to Unusal Names
I LOVE the name Siobhan (Shiv-aun), which is sort of different, depending on how many Irish people you know.
But I feel like there aren't enough Mary's or Erins in the world today, so when it finally happens for me, I think I'll go with something simple, just because THAT's different!

Re: Spinoff to Unusal Names
If we did not go with the traditional italian names I had a few picked.
I loved Morrigan Elyra for a girl and I love Terrin for a boy (although I never thought of a good middle name to go with that one).

My cousin in ireland is named Emer. I love it... short, yet elegant. My aunt was into this Irish soap opera when she was preganant with her and the leading character's name was Emer.

I love IrishTracy's daughter's name...Saoirse... I think it's so beautiful and I've never heard that name before.
Love that name too!
Saoirse means freedom in Irish.
To translate some of the many other Irish names I am seeing on this thread:
Seamus = James Aiofe= Eve Siobhan = Joanna Mairead = Margaret (DH and I LOVE this one and will hopefully use it one day on a daughter, if we are so blessed.) Ciaran - commonly used as a variant on Kevin. Finn is sometimes short for Finbar, but Finn MacCool is a popular character in Irish folklore.

Re: Spinoff to Unusal Names
Posted by donegal419 I also hate ignorant 9th generation Irish-Americans that name their kids things like Erin (that's actually the phonetic translation for Ireland, correctly spelled in Irish, it's Eire or Eireann) that's almost like naming your kids America or England. Shannon (that's a river and an airport) or the funniest I've seen lately was Cavan and Kilkenny... these are counties in Ireland....that's like naming your kid Ohio or Missouri!
My parents are from Ireland. My mom gave me one of these typical Irish American names. When I asked her why she chose my name over a traditional irish name she simply replied, "I like the way it sounds." PS--My mom is from Kilkenny. I have never heard it as a first name though. I remember giggling when South Park was popular. "OMG- You killed Kenny!"

If we have a boy, hubby wants to name him Guy. For many reasons, obvious and not so obvious, I will not!
My Dh and his twin were almost Guarino and Crecenzo (would have been called Guy and Enzo) but their dad vetoed it and instead they have the most American names ever- Steven and Daniel.
