Re: Spinoff to Opinions
I think it DID...and the high school definitely changed some 10 years ago when the lines were changed and South Huntington students were transferred to Huntington SD. But I think the community has changed...jmo.
ETA - or rather, is changing. A lot of money has been dumped into fighting this...which is a good thing for the community.
I also think it's a shame that diversity is equated with undesireable and bad. Again, jmo.

Re: Spinoff to Opinions
As I look around my town, Lindenhurst, I notice alot of "hard working" looking people. People who are doing normal things like watering and mowing their own lawn, washing their own cars, playing with their kids in the yard, having BBQ's, etc. That is the typical American dream that I craved so much and now I am part of that.
My house was in the mid $300's and it didnt need any work really. We got lucky because the sellers had a disgusting amount of cats and dogs, the house wouldnt sell. We got lucky.
But DH and I arent rich by any means and I feel but we succeeded in reaching our goals of owning a home. If other people are out there like me, and buy into these towns listed in the beginning of the thread, the towns will maintain their "status".

Posted by MsG HS has one of the worst gang violence problems on LI
gangs in HS
That info is from 2004 - I haven't heard stories like that (honestly, even back then) - recently.
I know someone that works in the district and she tells me often how they are trained on gang violence, etc - it is definitely a big problem in the SD and from what I understand it hasn't improved in recent times.

I think it's fairly common for any school to train it's staff about gang violence, regardless of the area. Every town on Long Island is touched by gang violence - no matter how rich or poor! (sadly)

Brentwood used to be nicer - my mother in law great up there and it was nice....
Elmont also used to be nicer - my dad had a deli there growing up. But then he sold it in the 80's when the area got too rough. That's interesting that it's becoming more popular....maybe he can re-open the deli! my parents used to live in Hempstead, a loooooong time ago and it was nothing like it is today.

I heard that about Hempstead also. My father was telling me how nice it used to be - and by looking at some of the buildings....it makes sense!

IMO there are far more areas around here than have gone from good to bad - than the other way around.
shame

In the past, yes, places have gone from good to bad.... But I also can see the point other people were making about not-so-great areas getting better! And I hope it happens sooner rather than later!

The really sad thing is that I am a teacher -- maybe mid 40s...a professional career that required a great deal of schooling...and I can't afford a house on LI and if it continues to get worse I never will.

honestly, if that does happen, it's a looooooooooong way off. IMO it takes a lot longer to rebuild a bad area than for a good one to turn bad.
JMO
Sorry I disagree. Look at Eagle Estates when my Mom was working for CPS she had to have a police escort into. 2 years ago we drove through there and though there may be a block or 2 in there that I wouldn't buy on I wouldn't hesitate to buy soemthing in there if I had found something I liked.

prices are dropping- my dad just took $80K off his house to sell it
his agent said she is seeing huge drops across the island-
2 teachers bought his house- just like him and my Mom did 30 years ago-

the HUGE drops for the most part are solely on the high end houses..
the average house from 350-450...well there is some movement for sure, in some areas....but not something that is going to make LI more attainable to live in than before...
in fact i think that the areas that are somewhat affordable now....in a few years are going to actually jump up in price...

the 350-450 range is the thoughest market on LI... since most house hunters are looking in that range. from my experience, there really isn't a lot of room to negotiate on those homes, unless the house is a fixer.
