Sonograms
My MIL freaked me out yesterday and told me I should stop getting sonograms done because apparently they are linked to autism and hearing problems in babies? Does anyone know anything about this? is she overreacting? I was soo worried after cause I already had 2 internal!

Sonograms
I probably had over a dozen with each of my kids and they are perfectly fine. I had some crunchie chick tell me my daughter genitals will be deformed because of ultrasounds, there are always nutjobs trying to make some stupid point that they have no proof of.

i heard about that too and it freaked me out too but ultimately, the benefits outweigh the possible risks (which are not really confirmed).
i'd like to think that if there really was a link with autism, that the doctors would put an end to sono's.

Re: Sonograms
This might be one of the articles she's referring to. There have been a number of studies on this, and there should be links at the bottom if you want to investigate further:
sono danger?
In this pregnancy, I had one at 8w, one at 12w, one at 20w, and one at 26w (because of a potential complication). Sonos haven't been in use for *that* long, maybe about 25 years for the general population. So the jury's still out on safety. I think a few sonos are probably fine, but I'd avoid extra unnecessary ones. Don't panic.

umm this scares the bejesus out of me! With a high risk pregnancy, I've had a sono at every single appointment. And now I've been going weekly since 28 weeks. Ive had over 1 dozen sonos.. how is this not discussed?

Apparently breathing is linked to autism.
You have to trust your doctors on these things. Unless your MIL is a doctor with an expertise in this field, please tell her to calm down and also trust your doctor.

yeah there are some studies out there.........
But the doctors are doing the sonogram as a necessity.....Level 1, Level 2 & 1 growth.... then extras for the higher risk pregnancies - I've been getting a ton to see my blood flows for prior preeclampsia and extra growth sonos for gestational diabetes..... The risks are outweighed by the rewards of making sure serious issues are not worsening.

this is what DH says.. I actually worked closely with a NPO that helps families with autistic children. Although there is no formally known cause, I heard any of the following MMR shots/other vaccinations High Fructose corn syrup mercury WIFI exposiure and now ultrasounds...?? I think noone really knows.. Your MIL is better off not trying to make you a scared and paranoid mama... which she would have done to me with that info as well!

Re: Sonograms
There are "Studies" but nothing found. NO ONE knows the cause for autism.
Follow what your dr says and don't share too much with mom!
I had a high risk pregnancy and many sonograms. It was the close monitoring by my dr through sonograms that saved my baby's life.
I hope there are no long term risks found ..but right now he is here, and perfect

If you're high risk and carrying twins, then obviously they're necessary... the benefits outweigh whatever risks there might be.
FWIW, I think researchers are wasting their time looking for one sole cause of autism. There are probably a combination of causes.

you're totally right... everything scares me lately . And noone knows... people are just looking for things to say they found a cause.

And they are looking for a cause, to find a cure.
To the OP, I have a friend whose mom says the same things about sonos. I still get them whenever the doctor tells me too. Didn't Tom and Katie get a sono machine in their house to spy on Suri in the womb?

I've read studies that claim that rain is linked to autism... if that's the case, we're all in trouble. I wouldn't worry.

Me too. And I'll be having monthly ones for the 2nd half of my pregnancy.
There's no proof that unlimited sonograms are 100% healthy, but there's also no definitive causes of problems either. I'd just have the sonos you're supposed to have and leave it to the dr.
In other words, I wouldn't go to ultrasound centers every other week just to get a peek at the baby, but you're fine getting tested to make sure baby is healthy and growing normally.
