So what do you think about "McMansions"?
yesterday I went with my Mom to deliver some Passover goodies to her friend who is ill. I haven't seen her house or neighborhood in YEARS!
When we pulled up to her block, there were these 2 ginormous house, and I mean HUUUUUUUUUUGE houses (probably 4000 sq feet at least) that were built by builders after knocking down the old homes. this area is all capes and IMO, these 2 HUGE and super modern houses looked so strange amongst all the older capes don’t get me wrong, the 2 houses were gorgeous! But definitely looked severely out of place.

Not a big fan. We were looking for consistency of the neighborhood when we bought. The reason being if you upgrad your house, you can over price it out of the neighborhood. Those people will never get the value back on their house if the price it out of the neighborhood.

ITA - my neighborhood is very uniform - people have added on (all the houses in my neighborhood are three versions of a similar floorplan - most of teh houses (except for a block of sick colonials ) are the same.

I'm not a fan. I see that happening a lot in Levittown and it really irks me. The homes look out of place and warp the other homes around them.
My Nana who lives in New Hyde Park has a McMansion on the end of her street (of course no backyard) but the thing looks so stupid. It doesn't fit in at all

and they'll never get that price. they will have to settle for less. It's like buying a mansion in the worst part of long island. Who would want to spend $700,000 on a house in a neighborhood that you cannot walk in after dark? People need to get realistic.

not a fan at all. It irritates me that LIers as a whole have no respect for the architectural integirty of homes here. When Contemporary was hot everyone took homes with great old classic character & made them look "modern", When victorians were hot everyone made their cape, ranch or colonial look like a faux victorian. I really dislike those huge stucco monsters that people put in the middle of a regular block. Its cheesy to me. I don't like things too cookie cutter either, its nice to see some variation especially if the houses were built at different times.

They're ridiculous.
Especially in areas or blocks that they certainly do not belong in.

They're awful.
There's one street in my neighborhood that makes me cringe. A pretty row of well kept Cape style homes, and right in the middle of the block are these two GIANT Santa Fe meets Tuscan villa style homes. I can't even imagine who blended those two styles together.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
there is a house in a new subdivision in my town for sale. Its big, new & beautiful but the ad even says they spent 60k on upgrades for the basement. This area doesn't warrant that, the house is listed for almost 700k....it will be a freezing cold day in hell before they get that. I doubt a buyer could even find a lender to finance anywhere near that amount in this market. people are silly.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
They put one up right next door to us. It's a Mediterranean style house that towers over every other house, but at least a few feet. Orange-red barrel style roof, stucco, all rounded doorways and arches.
It literally blots out the sun. We have no sunlight on that side of the house anymore. We can't even see the sky when we look out the window, the entire view is taken up but this monstrosity.
This guy ripped down a house to do this, a couple of years ago. No doubt, to capitalize on the housing boom.
But he went way too slow. And with the taxes going up 25% in the past 2 years, he will be very hard pressed to sell this thing. Serves him right.

I do not understand why anyone would want the most expensive house in a neighborhood where you will never get your money back for it - They always look so out of place to me

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
by the NY def of McMansions- I hate them- next time I go to my Grandma's in Fresh Meadows- I'll take a pic of the 3 McMansions on the block
next to tiny tiny 2 and 3 bedroom ranches- and with in walking distance of the LIE
but in other state when they have the gated community of "McMansions" I actually love those

they're pretty popular out on SI, too.
and they're popular in NJ.
some of them are very pretty, but if it doesn't "match" the neighborhood, i don't think there's much sense in them.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
I hate most of them. My parenst live in Bayside and they are ALL over. Its one thing that they are H U G E and look ridiculous, but why do they have to be so UGLY?? I mean, when is pink brick really in? There are a few houses that are tastefully done, but for the most part they look like big, ugly brick boxes.
There's one a couple blocks away that they are doing over with flagstone and I think its going to look awesome, but its smack inthe middle of 2 ranches and looks silly.....

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
Pathetic. That's all I will say. They look ridiculous, silly, out of place and on top of all that, they are more expensive to heat and it's only more house to clean. In an essence, wasteful is what comes to mind. And they will never be a real mansion, basically.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
I agree that it looks out of place but I dont mind them. Especially since there isnt much land on LI anymore and homes are still so expensive. It's not like you can just buy your dream home anywhere you'd like. So if you have land that you can use and can build your dream house on it - why not?! Besides, because I see more and more of them coming up, I think the trend will continue in some parts and eventually the "McMansions" wont be in the minority anymore and won't look so out of place. However, I would never buid a "McMansion" in a bad / undesirable area if Im hoping to make a profit off of it when I sell.

Same feelings here.
I understand the need for more room, but I wish people would go with more historical or location appropriate looking styles as opposed to the post-modern crap that seems to be going up everywhere.
