Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
Like this one in levittown - It is right behind the boarded up Nathans on hempstead tpke and that mens shop right next to it - you can see the back of the house in the parking lot between the two buildings

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
I have the opposite problem. My cabin in the woods style house looks out of place since it's surrounded by the large newer houses. When I pull up to my house I always think about the song from Sesame Street "One of these kids is doing his own thing". I like my house, it's cute, but I feel as if it doesn't go with the rest of the neighborhood.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
That looks like a double lot too, most Levittown plots are not that big.
Is the sound of traffic and the view of the flea market from the backyard supposed to add to the value of the house?
Btw, I didn't know Nathans was shut down! I haven't been down there since last summer at least.
Imagine if another food place goes in, your house will smell like cooking grease.

its only on 102x102, id hardly call that a double lot - and i agree - $949 behind a parking lot is outrageous.
what are the taxes going to be on that house?

I wouldn't call it a double lot in other towns, but for a Levitt, that wide of a lot is not common. 60x100 is standard.
And I was thinking the same thing, what are the taxes going to be like?

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
I don't care for them at all, but this is my opinion. Architecturely, I feel they lack any charm. As someone said, they are often big, ugly boxes.
Personally, I would never want to give up all of my yard space for a house either, but that's me. I just wonder, how much space do people really need? There are some people out there with big families or living with extended family, but I don't think most people building these fall into those categories.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
If you want to see how big and stupid this house is take hempstead turnpike and turn on center lane HSBC is on the corner.
Make your first left turn onto Bell lane.
This house is at the end of the block next to a Parking Lot. There is a parking lot next to it and behind it. Also the rear of the house is now sided in white. Not sure what the front of it looks like. Cant wait for the open house and to see the taxes.
There is a yellow cape on that block that was for sale for $299k, another cape for $360k and a blown up double dormered cape for $599k.

Scott good luck to that builder trying to sell a $1 million house in a neighborhood where houses are being sold for less than 1/2 that amount.

not a fan at all. It irritates me that LIers as a whole have no respect for the architectural integirty of homes here. When Contemporary was hot everyone took homes with great old classic character & made them look "modern", When victorians were hot everyone made their cape, ranch or colonial look like a faux victorian. I really dislike those huge stucco monsters that people put in the middle of a regular block. Its cheesy to me. I don't like things too cookie cutter either, its nice to see some variation especially if the houses were built at different times.
I totally agree!

Same feelings here.
I understand the need for more room, but I wish people would go with more historical or location appropriate looking styles as opposed to the post-modern crap that seems to be going up everywhere.
exactly! I can see the desire to want to re-build an old home, but thought should be taken into consideration about the neighborhood, the block, etc. There's a lot of charm in those older homes that can still be incorporated into remodeling a new home.

Re: So what do you think about "McMansions"?
Well, we are in the midst of construction on our house and I don't know if you would classify it as a McMansion or not. We reviewed all our options (including moving - couldn't find anything we like) so this was our best option. I am not doing this planning on making any profit as I do not plan to sell. We did not rip our house down but just added on. Our yard is the same size it always was (which is large) as we just went up, not out. Right now, the only brick on my house is the front steps. My house is part of a development but everyone has been expanding, and a few houses down from me are newer, larger homes so mine is not out of place. The style will keep in line with the neighborhood, but yes it will be quite tall (it was the only way to get the space we need with our type of house).
That being said, had we lived down the other end of the block (where no one had expanded) we would not have gone with this plan. I do not agree with having a huge house among tiny houses, but ours is basically the first of the big houses on my street. I think when it's done, it will basically blend with the neighborhood. And should I sell it, yes I would make a nice profit because I bought years ago and even adding in the cost of the expansion and sellling low I'd still do well.
There are many reasons people build these houses. They don't have to be your style or something you would do. I think they look much better than some house that no one takes care of. More and more people are expanding and not moving, and I think there will be more and more of these homes.
