I'm sure you've seen them...
those HUGE houses that people put up in neighborhoods where they don't fit. You'll have a bunch of smaller modest homes (that are nice) and then BOOM - a huge fancy house. It drives me crazy.

I always think of them of a huge house (either by adding on or totally rebuilt after knocking down an existing one) that is on a block with very small to modest homes. They just seems to stick out of nowhere.

They are usually generic looking as well.

McMansion is a slang architectural term which first came into use in the United States during the 1980s as a pejorative description and an idiom. It describes a particular style of housing that—as its name suggests—is both large like a mansion and as culturally ubiquitous as McDonald's fast food restaurants.
In addition to ubiquity, almost every reason to poke fun at McDonald's has been applied metaphorically to "McMansions". These criticisms include the deviation from traditional local or regional architectural style, a gaudy, sterile, mass-produced appearance, and perceived negative effects on nature and neighborhoods.

they have them in Queens also
out of the 10 houses on my grandma's block in fresh meadows at least 4 are now McMansions and 2 people have bought 2 lots and made even bigger houses
they take up the whole lot- no yard on the side or back

Now that I know what one is - a cousin of mine owns a McMansion... it's pretty obnoxious too. Tore down his one level ranch and put up this GIANT house. Zero yard - all house. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

see this is what I think of when I hear "McMansion"
They are calling some new large houses in new developments McMansions but to me they are just large houses designed to someones else's taste.

Yes, that is true for the new houses that take up the whole friggin lot that your property would be on.
Although the original McMansion is the McDonalds in New Hyde Park.

think of near the intersection of jericho turnpike and rt 107
they are jamming tons of huge houses on small lots - no backyard etc
that is a prime example
