So, went to my genetic counseling meeting on tuesday...
It was depressing to say the least. They gave me my test results, 1 in 83 chance of my little one being born with downs syndrome. I was in shock. I expected 1 in 100 or more. I feel the odds are against me. I know there are plenty of you that had worse odds and your children turned out healthy, I also know there are some of you that had better odds and your child was born with downs syndrome.
Although I knew enough about downs syndrome, the session was informative and made me know for sure there was NOTHING dh and i did or didnt do to contribute to this.
I decided not to do an amnio, as I can not change the results either way. They moved my level 2 up to July 28 and on Aug 22 I will have a fetal echocardiogram.
Ive accepted the fact that my child may not be healthy. i am more sad for the life my child and my ds will have. Kids are so cruel. My dh keeps telling me I have to get stronger and fight hard for them. Which I fully intend on doing. It will just break my heart into a million pieces.
Please just pray for me that my sonogram doesnt show any markers. I want to enjoy this pregnancy but so far I have been so depressed and sad.

All I can say is I've read that test gives a lot of false positives and people's babies wind up being born perfectly healthy! I think next time I'm going to opt out of taking that test.

Thanks so much, Im counting on that being the case, but its hard to shake the not knowing for sure.
I am honestly scared to death to get pregnant again, especailly after hearing all the disorders my baby can have at this meeting.
I am actually getting blood drawn for a chromosome analysis to make sure i am not a carrier of anything.
if i do get pregnant again, there will be NONE of these tests done!

Of course. I totally understand. I would be scared to death too. Hopefully, the level 2 shows no markers. and more prayers and hugs for you...

I truely beleive the NT Scan should not be given. It does not give an accurate picture of things. My sister had 1 in 24 so she opted for the CVS test. Nothing is wrong. A co-worker had similar results and did not do any furhter testing and nothing was wrong.
I skipped the NT just for this reason. All it does it worry people needlessly.
I opted to know for sure instead and am havign an amnio.
GL Try not to stress because while you have a 1 in 84 chance of havign Downs there is a 83 in 84 chance the baby will be fine....Those are acutally great odds when you look at it like that.

its so hard knowing that something could be wrong. I give you a lot of credit for waiting it out. We wanted to know if our baby was going to be ok so I had a CVS done and everything is fine. I think not knowing would have been harder for me than knowing. I would have wanted to prepare myself. Stay strong. that everything is ok.

I had the same thing...my odds were 1/74. These were the results from my 12 week ultrasound. At my 16 week (I think that is when it was) they did the Part II of the ultraound...which was drawing blood again and testing it for the same things as the first one plus spina bifida.
Will the being doing blood work on you again? If so have the same lab do it and compare the two reports.
I went from having a 1/74 chance, to a 1/2200 chance. It happens sometimes with the reports.
We knew we didn't want an amnio...we knew with my age there could be problems we were prepared...but since it took us so long to get pregnant again...we wouldn't change anything.
DD was born in May...and is perfect...I think these tests are just to stress us out? I mean really why do they give us this test...it isn't like we ask them to do it....

Can I ask you why you don't want the amnio? The knowing was important to me and I love what the amnio did for me. I also wanted to know what immediate procedures could be done, who were the best doctors in that field and what hospital to deliver.
Don't worry about if you have any chromosome abnormalities. My high risk dr said that's the best case scenario since you are living a great life ...it hasn't gotten in the way kwim?

I think I am going to have them take blood again. That might put my mind to rest somewhat.
As for not getting the amnio, my dh and I both decided that although the risks are low, they are still there. If our child does in fact have down syndrome, there is nothing we can do. Why risk problems during pregnancy. We are already preparing for worst case scenario and I have been looking into support groups and just help in general.
Again thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers, it means the world to us!
