So I've hired a nanny - with questions
And I'm very excited - especially since I don't have to worry about getting the kids ready early in the morning 
So for mommies that use nannies - how do you get your kids out socializing with other kids? And how often? DS is perfectly happy being at home as long as he's active - we have plenty of backyard toys - and DD is too young to worry about that just yet. We also plan on having weekend playdates. How do you strike a good balance?
Also - do you set up your kids' menu for the day, portion it out in the fridge/freezer, or just let the nanny feed your kids what she decides?

We don't set up playdates for the nanny - don't have any city friends yet
:( He plays with the other kids at the park but he is still young so the
interaction isn't that much yet.
Regarding food for my older ds she figures out what to feed him for breakfast and lunch based upon what is in the apt. He is a fussy eater so the selection is slim
My younger ds I leave which food out I would like him to eat that day - we are just starting solids.
I make all of the bottles for her.

Congratulations!!!
Socializing...My kids went out and about with the nanny. They were in Gymboree classes and my older on attended preschool. They also went on playdates and to places like the park, book store, etc.
As far as a menu, no, I didn't set up a menu. I made sure there were easy things to feed them. I would make extra waffles or pancakes and have them in the fridge. I would have nuggets in the freezer, yogurt, etc. She would feed them what she wanted to feed them. I tended to make dinners that I know they liked so there would be leftovers for the following day.
I would also suggest that you ask the nanny to keep a diary of the day in the beginning. Ask her to write down feedings, naps, activities, general disposition. This helped me tremendously.

this is a great idea, my sitter does this daily
what they ate, how long they napped for, any time outs  , how many times the baby pooped, overall assessment of the day, and a brief description of what they did all day

Socialization - I don't have anything set up for our babysitter. She took the initiative to go to the local library and see when story time was. She takes him there on Wednesdays.
If it is nice out she takes him to the playground. I see tons of nannies at the playground who make their own "playdates", so unless there is something specific you want to enroll L in, I wouldn't worry about it.
Meals - when Frankie was an infant, I typed out a schedule for her with the basics, bottles, solids, & naptime since she was on a pretty good schedule already. I made all the bottles the night before.
Now that Frankie is a todder, she knows what he likes and just feeds him whatever is in the house. I would just give her a brief description of what he eats, something like "for breakfast, he likes waffles, oatmeal or cerea', for lunch, chicken nuggets, ham, etc."
Once a week, I leave a $5 for her to take him for pizza or ice creaam.
When I come home, she gives me a run down of what he ate, how well he napped, any diaper-related issues.
She also knows where his clothes are, and towels are in case she needs to change him/clean him up.
I also leave a list of all medications (tylenol, etc., mylicon), how much of each to give, and in what situations she should be giving it.

Congrats! To make sure DS was exposed to other kids, we always had him in Gymboree because it included free play every day that they went to. He also went to story time at barnes and noble and the library. He still does this kind of stuff at least 3 days a week and they're at the park for a little while everyday that it's not raining. Now that he's older she schedules playdates for him too.
With meals, I give her a general idea of what I want him to eat. When he was very little, I specified everything. Now sometimes I am very specific and sometimes I leave it to her discretion but she usually runs everything by me anyway.
And ITA about the daily diary! I'd have her do one for each child.
