So, if you went to a dinner party and the hosts served Venison...
would you eat it?
We had a small (4 couples) dinner gathering. We served venison. Everybody, except for one woman, ate it and loved it. It was not gamey at all. This woman refused to even try it. She eats meat. She claims she's a "foodie". But the drama over the venison...wow.
My wife did such a great job with the meal too.

Probably not. It's just not something I want to eat and I think it's an odd choice for a dinner party especially if you didn't ask the guests if they liked venison prior to the party.

Most of the couples claim they are "foodies". I'm the pickiest one in the bunch. I just was surprised how vocal she was about "eating Bambi". Nobody said "we're eating Ferdinand!" when she made beef carpaccio.

I'm sorry, I would not eat it. However, I don't eat red meat- any of it and have not for many, many years. I also wouldn't be rude about not eating it though. I'd eat everything else and quietly ignore the meat. If she made a big scene about not wanting to eat the venison, then that is very rude.

I have had venison before and am not a fan. But, I still would have tried it. Maybe I would have liked it how you made it? If not, I wouldnt eat it.
But then again, I dont eat anything just to be polite. If I dont like someone's meatballs for instance, I am not going to force it down, just because it's the right thing to do.
I'll just eat whatever else is available instead.

I don't eat it, however, I think that maybe the right thing to do would to make a few dishes, that way, everyone has something to choose from.
I agree, it seems like kind of an odd choice to serve at a dinner party....foodies or not.

i would definitely try it!
i've never had venison, so i'm not sure what to expect.
as others have said, if i didn't like it, i wouldn't force it down... i would just eat other items that were served.

I probably wouldn't but I certainly wouldn't make an ordeal about it, that is just rude.
My DH is a very picky eater and he never makes a big deal if something he doesnt' like is served.

Eh. That's a hard one. It isn't your decision to make. Some people don't eat veal because of how they are raised. Therefore I would ask before making something with veal. I've had venison because it was available to try at a holiday party. If it was offered as the one and only main course, I don't know if I'd be too happy about that. Would you make escargot and expect them to eat that too?

I would not eat it. I think you should've asked the guests if they eat it prior to the party. Venison is an unusual choice IMO.

I would not have eaten it because I am very strange about the meat I eat lol but I wouldn't have made a big deal about it, just would have eaten the sides and kept my mouth shut.

As a polite guest I would have kept my mouth shut and tried it. That being said, i would never make it a main course at a dinner party unless the guest knew ahead of time that there might be more of an eclectic menu. (Gives them the opion of filling up more on something else).

I love to cook and try new things, but there are some things thatjust do not appeal to me and that would be one of them.
Definitely not something that I would serve at a dinner party, but if served to me... I wouldn't eat it and would not comment about it either.

Same. The only time I've ever really enjoyed it was when a friend made it Sauerbraten style.
I usually ask my guests about preferences before a dinner party, and often have some sort of 'back up' just in case... like a hearty side dish or appetizers that can fill them up in case they really don't like the main course.
Having said that - I think your guest was very rude to be so vocal about her distaste for the meal. It's disrespectful to your wife and it's disrespectful to the other guests. If she didn't want to try it she could have quietly taken your wife aside, explained that she appreciated the effort but that she really could not bring herself to eat venison. I'm sure your wife would have arranged her plate to be all sides.

I think that this is what really startled us. This is a sort of "dinner club" amongst 4 couples. The goal is to do something different. We are aware of food allergies but other than that it's "do what you want". We had plenty of sides. We don't plate the dishes, you serve yourself. I don't care that she didn't want to try the venison. It was the going on and on about eating Bambi. Oh well, her loss. Bambi tasted damn good.
