i was using "hater" in slang...and it was a joke.

Tell that to Imus.

did he mean it as a joke? i'm asking causing i honestly dont know. i didnt hear the live version, only what the news is stating. if it was a joke...then yea, it was definitely taken too far.

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

I think the biggest problem with what Imus said is that he said it about a college basketball team. These girls did nothing wrong. It's not like after they lost these went out and caused a riot or they called the other team nasty names. These girls simply played a basketball game and then he looked at a picture of them and passed what is considered to be racist and sexist comments.

As far as the Howard Stern thing, I for one don't care for him. But he made a name for himself as the shock jock. He gets fined everyday but he brings in more money then the station pays in fines so it's worth it. He gets sponsors for his inappropriate comments. Imus was going to cost the station sponsors for his comments so he got fired. Right or wrong it comes down to business decisions. These stations have these radio shows to make money. If the host is costing them money they are going to fire them.

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

As far as Howard...I personally find him offensive....so I just don't listen to him. I would never want him to be fired though.

As far as Imus, never really listened to him. However, the racism issue was perpetuated by the good old duo of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who just jump at opportunities such as this one. Was what he said bad....of course BUT I don't feel that he should have been fired.

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

I think it was blown out of proportion. I think what he said was bad, but I don't think it was necessarily bad enough to fire him. He apologized. I think what he said was just more ridiculous than anything. The suspension and cancelling his TV show would have been a good punishment.

Howard Stern says worse, hell, that bytch Ann Coulter says MUCH worse and no one ever fires her. She called John Edwards a f*g a few weeks ago and there wasn't all of this media hype about it.

On the other hand, I do understand them firing him because they don't want to be seen as an organization that supports his comments. If he were independent it would be a different story, but he's a representative of his radio stations and companies, and as much as they disclaim what their hosts say, it still reflects on them. Still, he siad it, he apologized, he was fired. Let's move on. (not on LIF, I mean the media/society in general)..we have bigger fish to fry than Don Imus

For those that are upset he was fired...are you upset because you thought what he said wasnt THAT bad? Or are you upset because its been taken too far? And if the latter, what do you think should've been done to him?

I am upset because although what he said was stupid & offensive, he has the right to say it. The networks that he was contracted with should have worked harder to protect his right to expression on his show. I think it is dangerous territory to begin firing people when their job is protected by a constitutional right.

BTW I think Imus is a tool & personally do not like him, but that I why I chose not to listen to his show.....that is how it is supposed to work....

I agree, his comments were totally uncalled for, innapropriate and ridiculous, but every day shows for ex on Hot 97 are making fun of white people..and we don't do anything about that. This is the land of free speach, however, it's do as I say not as I do, seems like! Chat Icon

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

I feel that what Imus said was offensive but I don't think he should have been fired. Punishment was enough!

There are artists out there that say worse things in their lyrics but nothing in done. One good thing I heard on the radio this morning "you can't fire artists for what they say, you can only stop buying their CD's" I think that is where there is a double line!

It should not be a double edged short, don't just make an example of one person when there are others out there saying worse or doing worse!

I think the whole thing has gone to far, should he have been fired? I dont know. But if you may remeber after the Tsunami (sp) Hot 97 played the Tsunami song where it was basically making fun of Asian people and the DJ WAS fired for making inappropriate remarks about Asian people. So if you look at that then maybe he should have been fired. I myself cant stand Imus. I do like Stern and have heard alot more ish fall out of his mouth in the past, and he too has been fired.

Also Al Sharpton and the other guy totally drawing a blank each time there is an "issue" and they get involved it seems to take us (as a society) backwards. They are the ones who make more of it then need be. Was his comment inappropriate...yes; Should he be fired, I dont think so. I think it just got completley out of control.

not sure. if every single sponsor threatened to drop the show, who's going to pay for the air time? Chat Icon it's not a black & white situation - no pun intended. it's more complex that what the execs at the networks wanted.

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

I feel that what he said was inappropriate, however, I have heard alot worse being said on tadio talk shows- and Im not just talking about a black/white thing. I once heard a slur aout Jewish people that made my mouth drop to the floor. I was in complete shock & appauled that this particular DJ was not reprimanded.

I feel that the suspension is more than enough. This man is taking ALOT of heat for this. The fact that this is the #1 news story for the past week doesn't help his reputation, which THAT alone is punishment. This man has to forever walk around with this black cloud over his head.

I was listening to Hot 97 this morning & of course- it figures that they were bashing Imus AGAIN for this comment. I just wish this whole thing would end. What was said is said- it is done.. its over, he apoligized and he is being punished for it. The meedia needs to stop feeding Sharpton.

Re: So I have a question regarding this Imus nonsense...

I know that Mike and the Mad Dog are going to try to have Imus on their show today - so that will be interesting

To answer the question - I think both.

I may get flamed, but compared to everything else that's available on free TV and radio, the comment was tame in comparison. I mean, the comment was offensive and wrong, but I mean, really, if you look at EVERYTHING ELSE on the airwaves, is it enough to get fired over?

And yes, this did go way too far, and it gave Sharpton and Jackson undue power. CBS and NBC are pathetic. Fine, you buckled under pressure. Did you have to do it on the day of his radiothon, which stands to take a hit because of this? OK - the Rutgers team didn't ask for this - did the families of kids with cancer and the like, ask for this?

This is a hit to free speech - but more importantly, the issues here are:

1. Shows like Stern, and O&A, you know what to expect, so you tune in at your discretion

2. Money drives the ship. Sharpton pulled a power play, threatened to pickett CBS and boycott the sponsors and everyone freaked. Wait for this to die down - he'll be on another station next month, or on satellite.

At the end of the day, we'll all be paying for radio anyway.

Thank you for posting this Don. I am with you on this 100%

I am a listener of O and A and this morning, they were making pleas to their listeners to contribute to Imus' Radiothon.

Now I have posted my opinions about how I feel about this situation. I think what he said was disgusting. I think his employer has the right to fire him though I do not agree that he should have been.

But to fire him and not allow him to broadcast during the Radiothon that has raised millions of dollars to help ALL children is pathetic. O and A had the broadcast from Imus' program featuring his wife in his place. They made mention that the radiothon is way ahead of where it was last year and they can attribute this to the uproar and outrage of Imus' supporters.

I do not nor have I ever listened to Imus' show, but you can be darn sure I put my headset on in the car this morning and made my own donation to the Radiothon so that SOME good can come out of this nightmare. When it comes to the kids, there is no excuse. They should have allowed him to broadcast and then drop the axe on him if they really felt the need to.

I would encourage people to donate. ANYTHING to help kids.

As someone who works in radio (specifically programming like the Imus show) and I can tell you that these days it is a total differnt playing field than years ago. We are constantly on alert and redoing segments of shows, reworking bits and editing even the smallest of things. Each week we encounter something that *may* be indecent. It's such a pain in the neck and frankly out of control. Everything has to be so *safe* now.

yes what imus said was wrong. he has apologized. he was going to fill the suspension. he appeared on sharpton's show when asked. sharpton didn't want to appear on imus' show when asked. i think sharpton and jackson went far. he went to apologize to the girls. imus would learn from this mistake. where is sharpton when the shoe is on the other foot. you don't hear a peep from him. like a poster said, with all the stuff that howard stern as said , he was on the air for a while

I think his comments were ridiculous and he should have been punished for them, NOT FIRED. I think its not fair to punish a white man for saying it and not all the black people who say it daily on TV, radio, in music.

Like others have said, Double standard and its awful.( Its awful on ALL ends for all who talk in such a demeaning manner)
