I am a listener of O and A and this morning, they were making pleas to their listeners to contribute to Imus' Radiothon.
Now I have posted my opinions about how I feel about this situation. I think what he said was disgusting. I think his employer has the right to fire him though I do not agree that he should have been.
But to fire him and not allow him to broadcast during the Radiothon that has raised millions of dollars to help ALL children is pathetic. O and A had the broadcast from Imus' program featuring his wife in his place. They made mention that the radiothon is way ahead of where it was last year and they can attribute this to the uproar and outrage of Imus' supporters.
I do not nor have I ever listened to Imus' show, but you can be darn sure I put my headset on in the car this morning and made my own donation to the Radiothon so that SOME good can come out of this nightmare. When it comes to the kids, there is no excuse. They should have allowed him to broadcast and then drop the axe on him if they really felt the need to.
I would encourage people to donate. ANYTHING to help kids.
DH & I donated as well, and we told them that we heard about it on O & A.
We also wrote very long & very stern letters to the programmers of his respective stations bashing them for their cowardice. I have also written to local legislators to ask them to make a stand in Wash, DC that this is a form of corporate Censorship & that it is unconstitutional.
Please if you can donate to the radiothon & do not let the kids suffer at the hands of the larger corporations' cowardice! 1/877/877/6464 to donate.

I cannot imagine what your daily life at work must be compared to what you thought it would be. I am not sure how long you have been in the industry, but if it is more that 5 years it must be a whole different life......
I've been in the industry since 2000, lots of changes since Janet's boob came out. I worked for clear channel when they dropped stern - that was interesting to say the least.

For me, the punishment was excessive and driven by a fickle marketplace and a raving Al Sharpton. I thought it was a capitalistic-oriented decision made by the fearful head of a powerful corporation. The decision did not take into consideration the personal responsibility that Imus took for his comments and the value of a lesson learned, as well as the ability of individual people to make personal decisions on the issue.
I hope for Imus (though I'm not a personal fan) that the free marketplace and further public thought and actions will find redeeming possibilities for him.

I definitely think that what he said was inappropriate. But he's allowed to say what he wants according to the 1st amendment. If no one wants to hear him talk, then change the station. I also don't like the fact that of all the stupid things this man says, they choose to focus this time because he actually said something offensive about A-A people. What about all the other times he's made comments dealing with other races, nationalities, ethnicities.
I agree...I think firing him went way too far.

Whats funny is that I remember when that happened. I was young and not terribly political. I am not young and I am still not political. But it did hurt a lot. The Jewish organizations on campus tried to have a large Jewish population of students sign petitions to prevent this from happening. I refused to sign. The man had a right to speak and have his message heard - even if you dont like what he has to say.
There is a lot to be said for dignity. you will never see me try to railroad someone into losing their livelihood because of my broken heart. That is way too easy.

I feel like if I listen to some other radio stations like hot 97, or others the word "ho" is thrown around SO much, as is other deplorable words. Why are they not suspended? or Fired? Why do they play songs with the "n" word, the word "ho" and other words without being fined? There is a double standard. IMHO. you fire or fine everyone (DJ's, Stations, etc.) for using those words in their comments and songs or you do not.
I agree with Moe's comments regarding firing him in the middle of the telethon, that is horrible. Fire him after that, if you want to.

I am upset because although what he said was stupid & offensive, he has the right to say it. The networks that he was contracted with should have worked harder to protect his right to expression on his show. I think it is dangerous territory to begin firing people when their job is protected by a constitutional right.
BTW I think Imus is a tool & personally do not like him, but that I why I chose not to listen to his show.....that is how it is supposed to work....
Freedom of speech is not completely unrestricted. CBS had a right to fire Imus. An employer can fire an employee whose comments substantially harm the employer's business. Radio programs profit from the ads they sell. Major sponsors removed their ads from the show. The loss of these sponsors harmed the program.
I don't agree with the decision, but CBS had a right to make it. I think the double standard is ridiculous, but everything is about money.

So, IMO, it IS a racial thing and it IS getting blown out of proportion. Not that I am following it all that closely, but is anyone standing up for the women in this case, or do we only care about the racial aspect of it?
I think it's because most of us just let the ho comment slide, but STILL can't let the racial part go.

I am fully aware that CBS has the right to fire their employee, and although they have that right I think the manner in which they did it and the timing was horrible.
I also think that when you are in the business of media, in any measure, there are certainly ripple effects of what you do as a DJ, and also as a corporation. Society is changed, as well as what we can deem acceptable expression, when these types of tactics are used to "punish" and idea or thought (no matter how bad, controversial or offensice) that was stated in the public forum of media.
We are in a country where the government is SERIOUSLY considering altering the constitution to make gay marriage illegla, but they are not defending the First Amendment. It is just a scary change that we have coming. We are reverting back to a very old way of thinking and a very conservative, restrictive & "neat" little society. It a bogus facade that the government & corporations are actively pushing, IMO.
Reminds me of:
Brave New World
the society they created for Demolition Man (although I would not generally reference this movie other wise...)
Its ok to have mindless robotic citizens pre-destined to certain lives, as long as they don't think & don't disrupt the order of things Bad, very bad....

As far as Imus, never really listened to him. However, the racism issue was perpetuated by the good old duo of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who just jump at opportunities such as this one. Was what he said bad....of course BUT I don't feel that he should have been fired.

I don't think Imus should be fired. I don't listen to his show because I don't agree with him. I bet many people DID agree with his comment, regardless of how vulgur it was. So those people continue listening, while the ones that don't agree don't.
As usual, the media helped blow it out of proportion.

Plus listen to Z100 and many of their songs are can be very offensive depending how you interpret them. Should they be taken off the radio? No, then why should Imus????
