Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

I teach in NYC if we aren't given a snow day and it's bad I use a sick day.

When I used to work in an office and it was bad I had to take a sick day. I took the train and subway and worked in the city.

I think it depends on your office.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

if it is snow over a certain amount - i think like six inches - my work cannot take a day from us (sick, vaca, personal). it is an excused absence - no questions asked. not sure how it works with getting paid though. we are in a union - i have yet to encounter a situation where i would use this so i'm wondering how that works.

I teach, if we aren't off I have to get in, it would be hard to get a sub in.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

I techincally work for myself- and don't get paid time off- so I will only not work if it's really bad

if it's a day I have an open house- my broker will tell me not to do the open (people don't come in the snow)

I will work from home on a week day and relax on the weekend

I use personal days because they are use them or lose them days. I get to carry unused sick and vacation days from one year to the next.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

We are forced to get into work before the snow hits. If we don't, there is hell to pay.

If I have to stay home tomorrow, I'll probably work from home. Otherwise, if I feel lazy, I'll take a personal day.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

I work for the county, and we have to take a sick, personal or vacation day if we can't make it in because our building never ever closes (kind of like the police).

I also think we have the option of taking unpaid leave but I'm not sure.

We dont get paid for calling in on a snow day since I work in healthcare and we do not close. Unless we can provide a dr's note that we were actually sick.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

we never close and if we dont come in they automatically take a vacation day but we can be as late as we want- so literally I could come in at 2pm and no one would say anything- so weird

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

Yesterday, my boss, inmy small office of 4, including me, told me that if it was hard for me to get into work, that I could take the day.

Today, I see an email from him to a coworkere saying, oh she could take the subway.
umm..no, atually, there ARE delays when it snows w/the subway.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

i typically work from home in that case. Or if they close (which never happens) it would just be a snow day. But I'd probably still work from home.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

We get docked a vacation day.

I understand the need to do that. I just feel with storms like the one that is going to hit us tonight/tomorrow, they shouldn't hold it against us.

It'll take me about 2 hours to get in & more than likely they'll tell us to leave around 1:00. Which will mean 3 hours to get home Chat Icon

I have to come in because I'm banking all my vacation days for maternity leave

I can usually work from home, so I don't take a vacation or personal day.

we don't close, so if it's really bad out and we can't make it in, we can stay home, but you're expected to work from home.

Vacation day

Our building/company never closes. Even salaried, exempt employees have to use a vacation day, even though we have "unlimited" sick days.

I have a feeling this is enforced on a departmental basis though.

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

We don't get personal days so it's either a vacation or sick day........however it's called in is what will be marked.

If you call in sick on a snow day, they mark it as that. Otherwise, it's taken as a vacation day.

But as of now, there's a high chance our office will be closed and we don't have to worry about using a day! Chat Icon

Re: Snow spinoff...missing work

From what I've been told, we never have snow days. I work in the city and there are several people that live in the city so they can get to work. I won't be able to and I'll have to use a PTO day, which pisses me the hell off because I can work from home. Chat Icon
