saw something so disturbing yesterday
i'll just start by saying i don't believe in smacking my children due to my own personal experiences. DS will have discipline, but not corporal punishment. that being said, i do believe parents have the right to hit their kids if they think it's best.
i'm on vacation right now with DH and DS. last night we were about to walk into a restaurant. there were a mom, dad and 2 kids sitting on a bench next to where the menu was posted. i wanted to see what was on the menu so i went and walked next to them.
i noticed the boy had his pants a little low. he was about 6 years old. all of a sudden the mother grabs him in her arms and starts smacking his bare bottom in front of everyone. i was standing within one foot of them. at first i didn't realize what was going on but then it hit me that, in the middle of this hugely public place (there were hundreds of people right there--it wasn't just a restaurant) the mom made her child pull down his own pants and started smacking him in front of everyone.
now i don't know what the boy "did" to deserve it. for all i know the parents were justified. like i said, if parents feel it's right to hit their kid, it's their right. but to do that in front of everyone? what exactly did that teach him? plus for me who was standing within inches--that was so inappropriate.
i just felt so sad for the kids. the parents were such trashy looking people (i don't care if i get flamed for that--it's the truth). all DH and i kept saying was that those poor kids probably don't have a chance.
i would never ever say something to a parent disciplining her child--it's not my place at all. i have no right to. but the humiliation this poor child must have faced, along with the pain of those hard smacks, was just too much to bear.
i gave DS extra kisses last night

And we sometimes wonder why people grow up to be the way they are. My heart just breaks for that little boy.

OMG.... seriously....
i feel sooooooooooooooo badly for that poor child.
whether a child deserves punishment is one thing..... however, public humiliation is another thing altogether.

That is so sad. I have to say I was spanked, and even hit with a belt when I was little. Never ever in public though. It would always be when we got home, and I did usually deserve it.
Now my parents def. do not belive in belts anymore, neither do I. bUt maybe an occasional spank, not sure, haven't crossed that bridge yet. I do not think public humiliation on top of the dicipline is necessary. I am so sad for that little boy.

I would have wanted to rip her child from her grasp and just hug that kid for being humiliated like that outside of a restaurant. That just broke my heart knowing this little boy has to endure that kind of abuse by his parents (justified or not)

Wow that is disturbing! I have a 6 year old and not that a younger child would deserve to be humiliated like that but a 6 year old would be beyong humiliated. My heart breaks for that child. I know people have different methods of discipline but that is just a self esteem zapper, to say the least. Poor kid!

Disgusting. I would have said something and then called the police. Not sure what they would've done, but still.
I wonder why it's "okay" to pull our kids pants down and hit them but not okay for adults to hit each other in the eyes of the law?

I am not sure what justifies such hitting, pants down and back up.
Absolutely no excuse for the humiliation except sadism from the mom i.e. getting joy out of embarassing/humiliating your child.
Does she plan on doing that for much longer? When he is 16 too?
I am not sure what lesson she really think she is teaching. Except resetment from her child.
