Private Room - Worth the $$$?

We have a large and loud family...we were contemplating trying to get a private room. Then we heard the price. Chat Icon I am hoping to go vaginal so it may only be a couple of nights. Did you do it or are you planning to get a private room???

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I was at the hospital yesterday visiting my friend that just had her baby... and after walking by another room and seeing like 15 visitors jammed in there for one person (and it was a double), I'm SERIOUSLY considering it. I could not deal with that many strangers in the same room with me, curtain or no curtain!

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I had a c-section with my first and it was absolutely worth it!! I was put in a room with someone else for about 6 hrs (4am-10am) after giving birth and was so happy to be put in a private room.

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

After being in the hospital for PTL I'd agree it's definitely worth it. I had a roommate and she was nice enough, but if you can swing the $ it's totally worth it.

I am OOS and the hospital I gave birth at, everyone is automatically in their own private room. It was great! Just me, DH and DS in our room with no one else. I can't even imagine sharing a room with someone with those curtain dividers.

I say if you can afford it, go for it. It's nice to have the privacy that's for sure!

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I'm in the minority here but I think it's a waste of money. It sometimes stinks to share a room/annoying roomate/lots of strangers in and out but IMO it's only a few days and that money can be better spend somewhere else! Maybe it's bc I've been in the hospital so much I'm used to it, I've literally spent months at a time in the hospital Chat Icon
This time around I'm using some money that could be used for a private room for a newborn shoot Chat Icon

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I didn't get one and honestly it wasn't that bad sharing a room. I was there for 3 nights because I had a c/s, but the 2nd night I didn't have a roomie. For the exorbitant price just wasn't worth it. I'd much rather spend that money on a family vacation to a nice hotel.

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I was told (at least with St. Charles) that the rooms that aren't private don't fill up. If there's 10 rooms that fit 2 or more, they don't cram you in there, they will divide it up, so you can have a roommate for a day or may not have one at all your entire stay. This happened with a girlfriend of mine - delivered at St. Charles, put in a room fit for 2 and never had a roommate, they try to give you as much privacy as they can.

check with your hospital first.

Thanks for your opinions! At LIJ it is about $500. It might be a game-day decision!

The ""room" might be private at LIJ but the bathroom is shared. Just something to think about!

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

When I gave birth at North Shore 2 years ago the private room they offered was like $1200 per night. I don't know if that's normal for that hospital or maybe the regular ones were sold out and that was a fancier one or something...

I actually thought about it b/c I'm a weird anxious type person and I wanted DH to stay the whole time but then I said eff it and took the room mate. For $2400 I felt like I would kick myself later on.

Anyway, I only ended up with a room mate one night of the two. The girl I shared with the one night was totally unseen- there were curtain between us in a pretty big room and I never even bumped into her/ found out her name. She was on like her millionth kid so sorry to report, lol, like no one even visited her and she didn't seem to care anyway- even her DH was barely around (he probably had his hands full back at home).

So, to answer your op- for $500 I would definitely have done it but at the same time if I knew what the deal on my room mate would be I would view even that as a waste. However, I know I was just lucky- I've heard some horror stories about jerk room mates.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the all new maternity ward at NSUH- this time around all the rooms r private!

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

I had a private room for Chat Icon and it was WELL worth the money. I had a difficult labor ending in a csection and ran a fever afterwards which required Chat Icon to be in the NICU for our entire visit. If I had to share a room I would have lost it. I was an emotional wreck and having to share the room with someone who had her baby with her would have completely pushed me over the edge. This baby will be delivered at NSUH and I am so grateful that they have opened the new all private room pavillion.

YES... Unfortunately, they are not always available though-- so you gotta be aggressive about it. i couldn't get one my first night after I delivered DD. I am so happy that the hospital I will deliver this baby at, only has private rooms so I can settle in and just focus on recovering.

For me..absolutely! This assumes you also have your own bathroom. It's bad enough to share a room but on top of that sharing a bathroom when you're in such a vulnerable state...ICK!

If you have the $ then definitely do it, your DH should go put you on the list as soon as you deliver.

Re: Private Room - Worth the $$$?

For me it was worth every. single. penny!! Both times. And it was alot of pennies! Chat Icon We found out way ahead of time how much it would be and budgeted for it. If you think you're an easygoing enough person to handle other people, and other people's families, and other people's newborns then don't worry about it. Me, I don't like most people in normal situations Chat Icon , so add to that giving birth, uncertainty about how I would feel, how my newborn would be, how many visitors I would have, there was no way in hell I was sharing a room, even for a few minutes.

i was just reading the admission materials etc. i received from LIJ yesterday and I feel much better about NOT spending the money now that I see that visitors are limited to 4 at a time (including spouse) and husbands aren't allowed to stay overnight.

I too was in a room meant for four but i was the only one in there. This is going to sound strange but i got lonely Chat Icon I was hoping someone would be in the room with me. At that time i was a first time mom and would have loved to have a roomate to talk to. Im due in February im not going to shell out money for a private room.
