POTUS Dallas memorial speech
These cops don't die if the other events don't occur. Granted, the cop killer was going to plan something anyway, he seized the moment of the protest to come and kill cops.
I think BLM movement has issues as it appears blacks are missed treated. When you act like an "A"-Hole, something "MAY" happen to you. Accidents do happen and their are cops out there that probably shouldn't be cops. RESPECTING other human beings is the core problem in this world. These blacks that think they are targets are targets because they have prior history, don't have respect and a high probability that they did do something that they shook. This cycle will continue until these blacks want to have better lives, good jobs and a future for their kids. Instead, you see the Minn guy with pictures with his 4-6 year kids holding guns gansta style. I'm sorry but your future is what you make of it and these kids don't know anybody because their first word was not "Mama", it was "F-U". This is the actual problem. Black sticking up for blacks is not the answer. This is a social issue.
This coming from a black person that feels ashamed to be black because of ignorance and not accepting responsibility from other blacks. I've gotten pulled over and never once did I think I wasn't going home that night. I have been profiled in my life, I have been followed like a criminal. Someone did't think my daughter was not mine because she is mixed. Blacks were mad at one point because I went to a white girl. It sucks but this country and people came a long way since I was born. There is still work to be done. But we are missing the point. Respect will allow you go home. If you done something wrong, just own it. Everybody stays alive and no guns are required.

I'm obviously in the minority, but I wasn't a fan. Yes, some parts were good, but overall I wasn't happy with it. He took a funeral for 5 fallen police officers (who were murdered for their uniform and the color of their skin) and commended the BLM movement. He referenced Trayvon Martin, spoke of Alton Sterling and Philandro Castile, all of which, in my opionion, was totally unnecessary at a memorial for police officers. He would never mention the 5 cops at any of their funerals.
Couldn't agree more!
Agreed
Agree 100%
Exactly. He hijacked a memorial that was to honor innocent victims of a domestic terrorist, and turned it into a forum to push an agenda promulgated by the very group that caused their deaths. Horrible.
BLM did not cause their deaths. A lone gunman acting on his own accord who was not supported by a majority of BLM activists caused their deaths.
All cops didn't murder philando Castile just like all BLM activists did not murder those police officers.

So what you're saying is only the white officers should be honored and we should ignore the black men who've lost their lives to police brutality so we can continue to focus only on white lives?

No. What she's saying is that the memorial was honoring the fallen officers. Since they are the ones you showed up for, they are ones being honored. Get it???

Apparently you don't get it.
He has to acknowledge the black lives that were lost due to police brutality, that the brutality has led to the BLM movement, that one man's actions led to the death of these officers. If he doesn't, he's alienating and ignoring the plight of the black community. You can't acknowledge one without the other, and if you're choosing to ignore the black lives that were lost, that in and of itself is a problem. It's a tragedy all the way around, I am not ******* stupid, but if you want to pay respects you have to respect all the lives that have been lost, not just the white ones. Right, because ALL lives matter?

How do you think it would go over if he mentioned the innocent police killed if he was speaking at a memorial for one of the black men killed by police? People would be outraged.

I can't agree with someone else's opinion if there's racial undertones, microaggressions or subtle, casual racism. I can't educate people, but I can challenge them and why think what they think. I don't think people are inherently bad, but we're indoctrinated with a certain way of thinking that is constantly oppressing the voices and experiences of black communities and frankly I just can't stand it. And I know LIF is both the best and worst forum for this - it's overwhelmingly white and people don't like being challenged, especially when it comes to race, but it's a forum like this where maybe someone can benefit from being challenged.
Obama was a in a tough spot. He can't not acknowledge the struggle and experiences of his black communities and only celebrate the lives of the white officers - it would be a slap in the face to them. He had to straddle a fine line. We can't ignore the reason WHY this happened, and while I get that memorializing the officers was the purpose, he has a responsibility to acknowledge EVERYTHING. He did it int the best way possible, IMO.

No one said you should agree with someone else opinion, but that you should accept the opinion. Your posts show you know a lot about the subject, you are passionate and smart. But the fact that you can't see anyone else's point of view completely devalues your opinions. In fact, I think a lot of the negative events we see in the news are because people are so interested in being right that they are blind to how others feel. For example, if BLM movement can't see how having a criminal record and resisting arrest may put you at risk with police, then they are ignoring reality to support their cause. On the other hand, people need to recognize that there have been cases of police brutality, completely unwarranted. If you really can't see how the family of the police officers killed may be hurt to have the memorial turned into a political statement, I can't take anything else in your statements seriously.

Re: POTUS Dallas memorial speech
I think it's pretty well known that the POTUS doesn't support law enforcement. I agree with the others that it wasn't the time or the place to acknowledge the BLM. You wouldn't go to a 9/11 memorial and talk about the injustices that terrorists face. It's not about ignoring a specific groups problems, it's about respect for the people your currently memorializing.
I think it speaks volumes that most police groups don't support Obama.
I understand that telling people when and where they can express their views is oppressive but rules for society fall apart when people think they are entitled to do what they want, whenever they want.
I think groups need to be held accountable for their members actions. If so many BLM members are violent, then the movement itself becomes about using violence to make their point.

Exactly - understanding that there are other, valid opinions is the key to understanding each other and the first step that needs to be taken towards resolving much of the conflict. No one in this thread has said anything that is racist - an opinion that is different than yours is not necessarily evil, uneducated or misinformed. It is the thought process that there is only one "right" that is the root of so much of the hatred that we see every day, in our country and around the world

Re: POTUS Dallas memorial speech
Ap123. I agree
This is what I don't understand. Why can't I agree that yes in some cases I agree there was police brutality but in others there was not. Why if I think that I am a racist? I am blind to issues?
Why is it always one way or the other. I feel like each case is different and each has different circumstances
I also hate when I read how black men are being targeted. Does that not imply that he cop went out that day and said hmmm what black man can I kill today?
Does that mean I think the police are correct in every case,no. But I do not think anyone is targeted
Also why is it ok for so many quotes. Memes saying white people stop posting MLK quotes Stop posting videos of officers Doug good things
How is anyone spreading a message of love a bad thing?

Thank you for further making my point that you are not willing to participate in a discussion that is not 100% agreeing with your views. Additionally, thank you for letting me know that I have no clue what is going on in the world. I honestly don't understand your anger, I didn't attack you, I fact I said you were well versed and smart. I'll leave the thread since you obviously just want people to participate who will echo your sentiment. I honestly do think that close minded views are what is ruining this world.

He is the POTUS. His job is to be diplomatic. If he can't do his job because he is "in a tough spot" he shouldn't have been there. Every person, group, race, & country has it's struggles. You don't use the tragedy of one group as a platform for another group. It's insensitive and the exact opposite of being diplomatic. It doesn't matter what the cause.
I understand the points your trying to make, but being argumentative and not being sensitive to other peoples feelings and opinions doesn't change anyone's mind.
You lose a lot of credibility when someone makes a point and your go-to response is just to imply that we all think the way we do because deep down we're all racist. We are not all racist and you are not the only educated person on this website.

And she's right. If people really think that is "all" that needs to happen, that's a very narrow view.
People read sentences like that and interpret it to mean that we think that black people can act with impunity and of course that's not true. Respect goes both ways.
But I've seen it with my own eyes - my students getting harassed in the street by police for literally no reason other than the color of their skin.
The black community has legitimate complaints.

Unless people are actively trying to change their way of thinking, then we're all complicit and racist in many ways. Race is a system of oppression and if people are upholding that system rather than actively trying to change it, then you're complicit in its oppression. Its' not my opinion, it's a fact. I know people think I am being argumentative but I am not, I am not thinking I am better than anyone. I just don't know why people have such a hard time hearing about race. So many people hate our president simply because of his skin color, they think he panders to the black communities, they find every which way to tear him down and deep down, the only reason they can come up with is skin color.
There are a lot articles people can read about white privelige, white fragility, white tears, whitesplaining, the history of racist infrastructure, European-dominated influence, why white is the default in the world, the list goes on and on. We don't live in a post-racial society, and many people simply choose not to see it. There was a civil rights movement in the 60s and we're going through another one right now. Ignoring parts of the problem simply because you don't like them doesn't solve anything.
It was unbelievably eye opening to realize how deeply embedded race/racism is in our psyche. If people don't like what I'm saying, thats OK, I can't change their mind. But it might click for someone to say, wow, I never thought about this before.

But BLM is not responsible for these cops murders.
And if people think that all black people need is to stop and be respectful, then you really have no clue as to what is really going on in the world.
Thank you ap123
You hit the nail right on the head with this
I've decided to agree to disagree when it comes to the topic of race and kitten. most other posters will sometimes make peace with the fact that not everyone shares the same exact views - it's called being Human. I personally do not appreciate being "called" a racist bc my views aren't exactly the same - but I know who I am, and this is just LIF

Your first sentence starts from the position that everyone IS racist. The rest of your post assumes most people are uneducated about race. That is a horrible way to look at people you don't know anything about -an d I don't mean for the people you are making assumptions about. I mean that is not a way I would want to go through life - assuming the worst in people right up front.

No, I am not looking at the worst of people. Again, the construct of racism is a system that was created by white people - however many hundreds or thousands of years ago - and white supremacy, however benign or blatant people choose to see it, has been engrained in us all over each passing generation. White privelige does exist, and people benefit from it whether they believe in it or not. In some way, shape or form, every single person has had a racist thought, said something racist, made a racist joke...racist people aren't just people who walk around overtly making racist comments and calling people the N word...I know that I have been treated differently and have had opportunities and experiences that would never be available to a black person and I don't think that's right. I don't subscribe to the theory that you just need to pull yourself up the bootstraps to become someone. There would have to be a level playing field for that to happen and there isn't one. Banks target low income areas and restrict access to credit, mortgages and impose overdraft fees that make it impossible for people to catch up. There is a huge racial wage gap that studies have shown pay black men 75 cents to every white mans dollar. When you're caught in a cycle of poverty, everyday basic needs cost more because you don't have the luxury to stock up in advance or buy organic foods. Access to higher education, redistricting, the property tax/school funding disparity...this list is endless and I'm not making this up.
When people clam up at the mention of race and feel like it is a personal attack on them, I can't help them with that. That's their white fragility and white tears. I'd rather people say they just don't care about the racial issues in this country rather than say they don't exist because, frankly, it's more accurate. People have every right not to give a shit about the racial inequalities in this country, but don't get mad at others for trying to do something about it, and don't act like people are making this all up.
