POTUS Dallas memorial speech

Loved it

I can tell he was treading a little lightly trying to be as PC as possible, but I think he did a fantastic job and touched all subjects that needed to be said.

Already seeing a lot of FB hate towards some of it. But that's just from people who hate him in general.

I'm not his biggest fan, but I can appreciate all he said today.

It was a great speech.

He could walk on water or find the cure for cancer and people would still hate on him.

I wish I DVR'd it so I could watch it again.

Loved this part:

'As a society we choose to under-invest in decent schools, we allow poverty to fester so that entire, we refuse to fund drug treatment and mental health programs,' Obama said.
'We flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a glock than get his hands on a computer or even a book,' the president continued. .
'And then we tell the police, you're the social worker, you're the parent, you're the teacher, you're the drug counselor, we tell them to keep those neighborhoods in check at all costs, and do so without causing any political blowback or inconvenience, don't make the mistake that might disturb our own peace of mind and then we feign surprise when periodically the tensions boil over,'.

I'm pleased that someone who isn't a fan of him can still hear that he said and put aside their feelings and appreciate what he said. I think we need more of that on all sides.

I didn't see it but love this. I am also not a fan of Obama and can see through that. I hate the closed mindedness that because you aren't part of these set "parties" you can't agree with something someone says. I feel like there are so many more "good people" than bad and we need to just keep coming together instead of playing this sick, twisted eye for an eye thing. If we don't come together soon and make real changes, I am scared to think about the future of our country.

I love Obama.

We need more than coming together. Sitting around singing kumbaya isn't the answer. Our country has been built - fundamentally - on racism. Hundreds of years of microagressions that have become so engrained in our psyche that it's the norm, the standard. You can't undo that by saying, let's all Come together. It just doesn't work that way on the most basic level. In theory it sounds enlightening, but the reality is that you can't ignore the very obvious sociopolitical disparities that exist and hen expect the very people who are oppressed by that imbalance be the ones to make the change. It's like telling rape victims to get out there and be the ones to stop rapes from occurring.

We need the good cops to stand up against the bad ones.

We need accountability.

We need increased community participation from LE.

LE has turned into a pay for play industry, for profit prisons that operate much like a corporation whose sole focus is to create revenue at any cost.

You simply cannot deny that police brutality against the black community exists. And you cannot deny that white criminals become victims while black victims become criminals. Racism and the myriad, far reaching and often devastating effects of it, cannot end unless white people are willing to check their privilege and realize that a whole lot of horrible imbalances exist. Black people didn't create racism so they can't end it.

The Dallas shooter is not representative of the BLM movement.

The speech was beautiful. I was annoyed that the officer seated behind him was falling asleep.

I am so glad that you posted this. I have seen so much hatred for this speech by so many on social media. I thought it was a great speech but I tend to keep my mouth closed online as I don't want to be yelled at. Chat Icon

I'm obviously in the minority, but I wasn't a fan. Yes, some parts were good, but overall I wasn't happy with it. He took a funeral for 5 fallen police officers (who were murdered for their uniform and the color of their skin) and commended the BLM movement. He referenced Trayvon Martin, spoke of Alton Sterling and Philandro Castile, all of which, in my opionion, was totally unnecessary at a memorial for police officers. He would never mention the 5 cops at any of their funerals.

How can he possibly commend the BLM group when they have known to chant "pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon"? and mention them at a memorial for cops?

An answer like that is exactly the kind of oppression that PoC are constantly hearing - there is a time and place for their feelings, there is a time and place for their outrage, there is a time place for their experiences, there is a time and place for their pushback...but why are we telling them what they can and can't do? It's not a movement for white people, white people need to stay out of it. When exactly IS the right time and place?

Obama can't NOT acknowledge the huge injustices that are being perpetrated against the black communities. He is a black President, in the worst crisis of civil justice we've seen in our generation, and those cops wouldn't be dead if there wasn't already a huge racial epidemic in this country.

I disagree. There is a problem and, because of that problem, several black men and several police officers are dead. Both police officers and the black community need to be involved in this conversation and ignoring it at events like this will only deepen the divide. Everyone is hell-bent on proving that they are right and, especially here, no-one is right and unfortunately, several men are dead. The president did not have to attend, but he did, and I thought he did a fine job at sympathizing with both groups.

This

This is why I liked his speech. I understand the time and place comment. But, in this instance - it was the exact right time for him to grab the attention of EVERYONE. It wasn't at the officers personal funeral. That, I would say is definitely not the time or place. It was a large memorial with a lot of public figures in attendance.

But I do understand why some didn't like it. I get it.
But to me, he hit a lot of key topics and spoke to everyone , not just one side or the other (the fact that their are sides is a problem in itself but I don't want to get into that )

And I am a Democrat and Obama supporter. I just think that if someone came to a funeral or memorial service for one of my loved ones and brought up a highly controversial topic, I'd be pretty upset by that. I do think it all needs to be addressed. I just don't think this was the result that time or place.

Exactly. He hijacked a memorial that was to honor innocent victims of a domestic terrorist, and turned it into a forum to push an agenda promulgated by the very group that caused their deaths. Horrible.
