Poll.. "Forever home" or "For now" home...
What do you have?
We have our "for now" home. It is a small cottage that is only 750 square feet and one bedroom. I love it. Really, I do. It is like a condo but with property in a neighborhood.
I bought it in the height of the market and for now I owe more than it's worth.. dumb economy. If the market swings or we win the lotto We could put a second floor on and really live here for a long time. I don't want a big house and I love the "cottage" look. It is just so different than other homes that you see.
But since I don't see the market swinging back to what it was... It is our "for now" home and we will most likely take a loss on it We should have rented and waited for the market to change.. but, who could predict what happened..
Soo what kind of home do you have? If you have a "for now" home.. when do you plan on leaving and how scared are you of the current market never swinging back?

When we bought our house, we planned on moving at some point. Running the numbers, and knowing our neighbors and neighborhood, we decided to do a major renovation. We will then have our "Very long-term home". It will be great until after both DC are done with college. However, (assuming DC move out), the house may be too big for just DW and I, so I can definitely see us moving to a smaller house much later in life. Maybe off of LI so we can get several acres of land.
Life changes. You can never predict what you will want/need in 10, 20, 30, etc. years. What works now may not work in a decade or two.

Right now - we have our "for now" home but, we plan on making it our "forever" home in the future.
We bought the worst house on a nice block and plan on expanding our existing house to grow with us.

ITA. DH bought the house as a "starter" house but most likely will be our house for a very long time or THE house on LI. Given the market, neighborhood, we are better off now to do an extention to add the missing DR.
Unless we win the lottery I don't see us moving from this house.

it is our for now home.
Its definitely big enough to be our forever home, in a great sd, etc.,
but it is too far from DH's job and he can't get a teaching job on LI, so we are probably going to move in a few years, but who knows

It is our "forever home" unless we decide to move to something bigger WAY down the line.
When we bought, we bought something to grow into. It is by no means a starter home. I can see ourselves living in this house until we are old & grey but DH feels that eventually we will get something MUCH bigger, maybe on the water. If anything, this is about 15 years down the line...
We also bought in the height of the market, but we searched for 2 years & made sure that the house we were buying would still appreciate, no matter what the market would be in years to come.

I absolutely love your kitchen, and would love to see more pics of your house. i had an itty-bitty house too in lindenhurst near the water. i loved it too.
That home was a "for now" home, and the one i am in now was purchased for that too. my next home, i plan on being a "forever" home.

We purchased our "forever" home. And the renovations seem like they are taking forever too 
But I can't complain, even unfinished, I love coming home to my house everyday

Sounds exactly like us. Our house was also a cottage with a garage and a breezeway. The converted both into part of the house and now it's a 1000 sq foot 1 story ranch.
We also love our neighborhood and plan to stay at least 10 years. We do plan on adding a bedroom (it's only 2 bed/2 bath right now) but may not stay, even after that work is done.
If we move, we will stay in our neighborhood but try for a larger house and a larger plot that isn't on a corner.

I learned from my sisters mistakes and bought a forever home. It has everything we need and we will be adding a second floor down the road. My sister bought a for now home and can't seem to sell it and already found her forever home. She it taking over a 50,000 loss on the house and will have to lower the price again soon.

Trish I love your house! Girls, it's really so adorable and she forgot to mention the amazing backyard she has!
We bought our forever house -- but being in it almost a year I could see moving to something newer in the future. I'm also praying I can move out of our town at some point in my life.

We are both older and when looking for a house we wanted to it to be a forever home where we can grow our family.
Unless something changes we have no intention on moving.

it's our for now home. It's only a 2 bedroom, we've already added an extension to the back, are unable to build up and to build on the front would be to costly.

I think that it is our For Now home. It is still a home that we could live in for years and years to come, and grow with for a while but I don't feel that it is 110% my dream home and would like something bigger down the line (but way way down the line!!!)

I do not own my "home" it is a rental. We wanted to try to buy a starter home but decided against it. To be honest we would have been living paycheck to paycheck and if anything went wrong we'd be screwed. So we enjoy living in our apartment When we buy it will be our forever home. If we had a little more money I think we would have done the starter home. But, I had just graduated college and just started working full time so we didn't have the money. I believe we made the best choice for us. I love where I live even though I can't wait to really own my home!

i love our home.. but right now its a "for now" home until we figure out if DH wants to move after he retires in 10 yrs.. i would love to move out of state.. so instead of doing crazy stuff to our house we might do minor upgrading to a half dormer for more room.

we looked for a home that could be either a for now home or a forever home...Our house as it is right now is really a starter home, but it has great potential to become a forever home if we finished the upstairs and basement. so depending on the market and our future family, we could go either way with this house...

we bought it as a "for now" house with the intention of selling in about 10 years. but we could make it into our "forever home" if we need to. ideally, we would like to be in a larger house closer to the water. but we love our neighborhood and school district so we could make it work.

It's our "forever home". I didn't want to move again or go through the home buying process again - so after a few weeks of looking at starter houses we decided to change our view and go for the house we could see ourselves in for the long run. We closed in July - so I think we paid excatly what the home is worth. I don't see the value going down nor would I pay much more then what we did pay. I absoulty love the house and could never imagine doing it all again - at least until we retire.

We're house hunting right now. We didn't want a starter home, but we've been looking for over a year. We may eventually compromise and buy one that we'll grow out of in 5-7 years, but I'm still hopeful that we'll find one we could potentially live in for much longer.

We bought a house with the plan of buying something else down the road. But we also bought a house that could turn out to be our forever home. It has more than enough room for when we have children. So if we move, it will be because we want to and the time is right, not because we outgrew our home.

We bought our house with intentions of turning into our forever home right away.
We have a large kitchen, 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths and an inground pool
There isnt much more that we will need
