Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
Too many adults are too attached to technology- always on the phone or tablet. I'd be worried that my kid would be spending too much time with technology and not enough time interacting with others.

She has lots of non-electronic toys, as I prefer for her to use her imagination without toys that talk, light up, and make noise...but I make an exception for the iPad bc IMO, touch screen technology is the future of education. She also has a great vocabulary and is totally fine going days without even asking for the iPad, so I'm not worried about the effects of too much screen time.
\
It's not hte future of education, its the present of it. My 1st grader does 1/3 of his homework a night on the ipad. Plus I have an app on my phone to gauge his daily work progress and we have a class web 'room' for assignments as well.
I'm not sure how i feel about it being the present of education though. I see it with my niece and nephew and i hate the concept. kids don't know wth a dewey decimal system is or how to read and research. everything is instant gratification...they can type in a sentence fragment and get every answer they need. They can copy and paste too. IMO there is merit in researching, highlighting, reading and writing the old fashioned way. I'd hate to lose that.
Oh trust me, I am not a huge fan of it (except that it is helping my son tremendously) but it IS the present of education.
And I know that the programs he is using are specifically set up for his class (google Raz Kids) and his reading level.

I wouldn't specifically buy one for a child that young, but I have no probs with DD who is almost 3, using our iPad etc.

I was just going to add something similar...I don't think it's nutty to let a child use an existing tablet/ipad, but to buy a new one for the child that young? That's what I found crazy.
Thanks again for all the replies.

My mother bought my DD her own iPad for her 2nd birthday. I had no objections. I can honestly say she really has learned a lot from using it. But to each their own.

Re: Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
Can I ask an honest question, to all those who said No Way, is a tablet different (NOT IPAD bc that I wouldnt buy for my 6yo as its too $$$$) than buying a Leappad? - I mean while this is a kids items, its a tablet none the less with apps, games etc.
With that said, I think investing in a $600 ipad for a young child is insane. However, last year DS2 was 20m at christmas. we bought my DH a Kindle Fire HD, and within a month, it became DS2s. He loves it. He plays lots of letter games, we have some of his fave movies on there for trips, or what we are out somewhere and he gets antsy.
I am not sure I would have bought it for him at that age, but once he started using it at 21/22m I didnt have any objections. And he is not glued to it so I really dont see the big deal.
(PS for the record if someone had of asked this question when DS1 was that little I would have balked at the thought. But bc DS2 is child #2 with an older school aged brother, he is interested in things at a much earlier than his brother was)

Re: Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
I think it's crazy to get an iPad for a 20-month-old baby purely because of how costly it is, but an iPod touch is a good alternative. My daughter is 2.5 and was obsessed with my iPhone, which obviously I didn't want her breaking. So I bought her a refurbished, prior generation iPod touch and she loves it. She has her learning apps and all the pics and videos of herself that she loves to look at. I put a case and a screen protector on it and limit her time with it and so far it is working out very well

My in-laws got my son an iPad for Christmas last year (he was 2). We weren't thrilled at first, but now we are happy he has it... he likes a lot of educational games.

As long as you limit the time that your child is on any type of device (tablet, TV, leappads) I don't see anything wrong with it. There are a ton of educational apps and I think the kids get a lot of out of it. DD is much older (7) but she has had for a multiple of years an Itouch, and Ipad and we just got her a surface for a more computer based tablet.

Re: Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
I think it's fine and would have zero problems with my 2 yr old having one
Educational apps could only help IMO
If you are on it all say and maybe watching porn would be deal breakers for me

Yes, this. I probably should've clarified my reply after I went back and reread it. I realized I didn't quite make my point well. LOL
I would let my LO use my iPad on occasion but I wouldn't spend that kind of money so he/she could have their own, dedicated tablet. That's the crazy part.
