Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
I can't make it a poll on my phone, but do you think it's crazy to get a tablet or an ipad for a 20 month old? Or is it totally sane and a good idea? TIA

I'd get an inexpensive tablet. They have ones for $70

I'm not really for it, but people do it! I try to keep the kids away from too much screen time.

Personally I think it is too young. At that age, they need hands on interaction with toys and objects, and communication with humans :)

I think it's ridiculous personally. Like another person said, kids need to interact with humans, and their toys, not a computer. Yes, they can learn things, but they can do that without an electronic device.

I personally think it is crazy. There is no need IMO. I get that there are informational and educational apps for kids but I think I learned well without one while my nephew knew how to work an iPad before he learned to read or count or recite his alphabet.

I agree
From an American Academy of Pediatrics article regarding media exposure for children:
Pediatricians should continue to urge parents to avoid TV- and video-viewing for children younger than 2 years. Increasing amounts of research have shown that infants and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other regular caregivers for healthy brain growth.82,–,84 In addition, the results of 7 studies have shown that infants younger than 18 months who are exposed to TV may suffer from a delay in language development, and 1 study revealed that infant videos may delay language development.85,–,91 No studies have documented a benefit of early viewing.92

I have to agree with the above posters. I think it's ridiculous to even consider a tablet for a baby that young.............and I'm that last person to object to electronics in general. I just don't see the need for a 20 month old to use or have a tablet.
Let your LO play with blocks and toys..........there will be many, many years of electronics ahead of them. No need to worry about it now IMO.

I agree. I just feel like a kid should be a kid... and IMO, even though they make them for kids now, it just doesn't sit right with me

I totally agree even though I know kids love them. I am actually a bit concerned (mainly because I know nothing about it) about the exposure to radiation in young kids through my phone, tablets, etc. Everytime ds plays with my phone on his lap, I make him place the sofa pillow on his lap/crotch area. I'm crazy, I know.

thank god. Based on a post on the fb mom forum I thought I was the odd ball out...but i do think there is no need for a toddler to have an ipad.
my sis is getting my son the nabi for christmas bc she wanted to. I'm ok with it but he will not be using it all the time AND it even has a chore app where you can reward your child with nabi coins for the chores they complete.

I have zero desire for DD to have those things for a long time! DD has a great imagination, loves simple toys, art, books, and has a great attention span when playing. I don't see the benefit of her staring at a screen for hours a day on top of her begging to watch tv all the time as it is. She's used my nook a handful of time and I just don't see why I would encourage her to do it regularly. IMO there are better things for them to do with their time.

Thanks for all the replies.
FTR, I'm the one who thinks it's crazy, but the person who I was talking to said their son learned so much from it. I just don't see the need for it for such a young child.

I don't think it's "crazy" and I don't buy into the arguments that it is unhealthy (bc that's an issue of moderation imo) but neither of my ds were ready at that age. Ds2 , who is 27 months, plays with my iPad for maaaybe 10/15 minutes at a time and maybe twice a week (and still presses the wrong buttons a lot). Ds1 who is four, uses it almost every day, and will be wrapped up in games, videos, etc for about an hour until he moves to a different activity. It's not worth it imo to buy it early, since the newest technology is constantly coming out.

Re: Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
I think it's crazy for the child that age to have his/her own iPad/iPod/tablet...
That said, my 2.5 year old is a PRO at working MY iPad. She has her own apps (learned shapes & numbers) and also an Elmo app that reinforces the alphabet (that she already knows). I limit her time on it, however it was a huge motivator to get her to potty train (she was 100% potty trained at 28 months), and getting to use the iPad while on the potty was a huge incentive for her.
She has lots of non-electronic toys, as I prefer for her to use her imagination without toys that talk, light up, and make noise...but I make an exception for the iPad bc IMO, touch screen technology is the future of education. She also has a great vocabulary and is totally fine going days without even asking for the iPad, so I'm not worried about the effects of too much screen time.
But, if I didn't already have an iPad, she would NOT have her own, and at this point I will never buy her a kid tablet bc she will still just want the iPad.

Re: Please help settle a debate...tablet/ipad for 20 month old?
I wouldn't be for that. My DD is going to be 3 and I won't get her one. I actually have a first gen Ipad that I don't ever use. People have suggested I give it to her, but I won't. She'll watch the occasional video on my phone or laptop, but I really try to limit her tech time. She's just too young, imo and I'd rather see her engaging in pretend play then be sitting with a tablet.

I think they shouldn't have their OWN at that age. It is not necessary. My DS was 3 when i got my iPad and he def became a pro quite fast and now (3 years later) it is his.
Also, he does 1/3 of his homework on it a night, just something to consider.

It's not hte future of education, its the present of it. My 1st grader does 1/3 of his homework a night on the ipad. Plus I have an app on my phone to gauge his daily work progress and we have a class web 'room' for assignments as well.

I'm not sure how i feel about it being the present of education though. I see it with my niece and nephew and i hate the concept. kids don't know wth a dewey decimal system is or how to read and research. everything is instant gratification...they can type in a sentence fragment and get every answer they need. They can copy and paste too. IMO there is merit in researching, highlighting, reading and writing the old fashioned way. I'd hate to lose that.

Not at all.....its what they know now. Its really common place for them even though for some of us it seems extravagant. A tablet to them is what a boombox was to us. I would not invest in an iPad, but definitely a tablet.

No way not at 2. Maybe at 4 or so when they can do more interactive independent learning. There are so many other distractions like toys with bells and whistles and tv that we are already trying to ration. I would think it could have a negative impact on brain development to stare at a screen so closely so young. I'm not a neuroscientist though.
