how do you know the difference between a byb and a reputable one?
well, you really have to research them. do they show? do they sell on spay/nueter contract? do they ask YOU lots of questions and screen potential owners? ask them how often do they haev litters?
the main thing is really do they show. if they DO... then you know they are honestly tryingt o better the breed standard and such.
byb's dont show, dont sell on spay/nueter contract, dont ask you too many questions, dont use the term 'teacup' (if dealing with toy breed) etc etc
also, are tehy AKC registered? thats a big one.
Jes knows this already, but I used this info when I was looking for my Crested. It is a breed that is not that easy to find, but there are soooooo many byb & mills that it is hard to find a good breeder. What I liked best about my Crestie's breeder was that she asked me alot of specific questions about not only what I knew about the breed, but also about my other dogs, what it is like in my house, and asked for a reference from my Vet that I keep my dogs up to date on their shots, etc. Another breeder I was looking at was a BYB. She alwyas ALWAYS has puppies avaiable on her website, and asked me nothing except would I like to pay credit or send a check
OOH and to answer the original question. No I am not a fan of the designer mixes. They are selling for crazy amounts of $$, but because they are so new there is very little known about the health affects of the mixing, and also the long-term.

Re: Pet Breeding Q
I have to admit, the maltepoos are really adorable, but I would never spend $1000 on a dog that isn't a purebred.

well if it is a PUREBRED then i can see speninding money on it.
i have adopted dogs and bought from breeders
the whole point of getting a purebred is b/c it has the qualities uyou are looking for. or you may want to show and such.
i persoanly have a love for purebred dogs. i mena, certain breeds of course.
i will only get Chinese Cresteds fm now on. and maybe another Chi someday..
i know i wont find a Crested in any shelter!lol
NSAL had one for a while. Not sure if it's still there, I saw it about a year ago.

It is gone. And from what I remember it was not a purebred, it was a crested mix.

Oh, I didn't realize that. I remember feeling so bad for it, it was so scared, but we weren't ready to adopt at the time.

That's cool that you were considering adopting!
This is around the time I was seriously looking for a crested. I called them when I saw it on their site, and then I went to talk to them about it. They thought it was a mix, and Cresteds from a bad line can have a multitude of heath issues, so I definitely did not want to adopt one with unknown background. I was actually on waitlists to adopt one, but mostly you can only adopt through Crest-Care.org. The list was something like 8 months long at one point, so I decided to go through a breeder instead. Although I keep telling my DH, only rescues from now on

imo if you want a mutt save one from a shelter.
I agree...there are so many dogs that need a home in these shelters and you can get them for FREE...
