ped says NOT to give tylenol before or after shots?

My son had his 4 month shots today. THe ped said not to give him tylenol at all. Apparently there have been new studies that show that tylenol can create wheezing in kids and the vaccinnations might be less effective. Anyone heard of this?

I know with my 4 year old, we gave him tylenol when needed.

My 4 month old woke up screaming for an hour straight. We finally gave him tylenol, against my ped advice.

Just wondering if anyone has heard this?

I've never heard this before but I would have done the same as you. I was always told not to give it before and only give if she seems to be in pain or a fever.

I never heard that, in fact i just had my ds's 2 month a few weeks ago and dr confirmed to still do the tylenol every 4 hours for 24 hours (which never turns out that much anyway because I don't wake him at night). I'll be sure to ask again at his 4 month shots next month.

This is a new recommendation from the AAP as of 2010. The thought process is that when vaccinations are tested they do not include pre and or post medicating a child thus they don't know how the Tylenol interacts with the vaccination. We were also told the same thing, but our daughter also woke up SCREAMING and with a large red lump on her leg. We called our ped and she asked us to bring her to her house I should say she only lives 1 mile away and would have come to our house, but she has pretty severe allergies. Anyway we were told to give Tylenol and to always pre and post medicate her because of the reaction she had. This was at 4 months old. She is now 2.5 and we are doing great.

I did read something about acetaminophen an wheezing. I don't remember exactly but I believe it mentioned if kids are already prone to wheezing, it could make it worse. ( please don't quote me on this). But I was a very new theory and still being studied and tested.
I asked my ped because my DD wheezes whenever she gets sick. My ped was aware of the findings but was not concerned.
As far as giving it after vaccinations, I never heard that. So I can't give an opinion.

My first DS was born in 2008 and I always gave Tylenol after his shots.

When my second son born in 2010, the ped advised against giving the Tylenol, claiming it may reduce the shot's effectiveness.

I decided to wait and see how he acted after the vaccinations, if he was miserable or having trouble sleeping I would give the Tylenol. He was fine afterwards, so I didn't give him any.

I knew about this. My dd is 3.5. I never gave tylenol for shots however, she only had a slight reaction one time. I def never gave it just because she had a shot.

Agreed. If they're uncomfortable afterward, I'd consider it, but I don't give her Tylenol "just in case."

Oh i totally agree. We never gave it to help prevent anything or gave it after just in case. We only gave it when needed. I think with my 1st, we gave it once when he had a fever from a shot.

Our ped called us a few minutes ago to check in on Dylan and how he was doing. She said giving tylenol after shots (during) increases risk of asthema and decreases effectiveness of the shots. Which i understand.

But still...

DS NEVER cried. After his 6 months shots he wouldn't stop for 45 minutes. My friend told me she ALWAYS gave tylenol before the shots. So I started. The doc said not to b/c if they don't need it, they get used to the pain meds. I didn't care - gave it anyway.
With this study, I might hold off until after to see if he needed it.

Our doctor always said to not give Tylenol before the shots. We only gave it once after the 2 month shots because he felt warm and was pretty fussy a few hours after them. I would only give it if DC has a fever or some other type of reaction to the shots.

Our ped says the same thing.

Something about it affecting the antibodies. He said onl,y if needed.
